Church as a paying customer? Nov 29, 2024

Maybe, if your last name is Santi or Da Vinci. Or you are a construction or utility company.

Similar case for the language pair English-Tagalog Dec 8, 2024

I received an email from a guy named Stephen Walker. He has a Proz.com Profile: http://www.proz.com/profile/3068342
He contacted me via Proz.com. His email account information is Stephen Walker .

Basically he was offering me an opportunity to work on a project with details below:

Basically he was offering me an opportunity to work on a project with details below:

"it's my pleasure to refer to some details of the project for you:
- language: English to Tagalog.
- Volume: book(containing many articles) more than 2500,000 words and the volume is still increasing
- Volume: 20-30 movie scripts per month and each script has a different length from 15 mins to 50 mins.
- Deadline: flexible, depends upon the volume of the tasks, schedule, and capacity of the translators
- Both full-time and part-time work is totally fine.
- Rate: negotiable.
- Payment methods: Paypal, or Wire transfer"

Then, an alleged "co-worker" of Mr. Walker, named "Zoe" contacted me via email, claiming to be from the "Good Canaan Land Church based in US", wanting to see if I am willing for a free translation test.

I have not yet replied the latest email in order to take the test. I am not sure if this is legit since it involve a big volume of work. Good thing I came across this forum discussing the same concern.

I would greatly appreciate if anybody can share their insight on this. Thank you very much.

This is the exact thing that happened to me and I am currently doing a test from them. When I asked if they agreed to my rates, "Zoe" said that it would be discussed after the test. Now I don't know if I should continue.

This has red flags all over, it's definitively a scam.

Red flag #1: the Proz profile. It seems this person doesn't have credentials nor memberships, doesn't use any software, and most importantly “is not affiliated with any business or Blue Board record.”

Red flag #2: the website posted on the Proz profile is a Facebook personal profile, not a public business page.

Red flag #3: Gmail address is his personal email, not a corporate one.

Red flag #4: Spelling and grammar errors in the message. It doesn't seem written by a language professional.

If “Zoe” also used Gmail, it's red flag #5.

obvious overpayment scam Jan 11

This has all the hallmarks of a scam.

1. Contacted you privately out of the blue rather than posting a job ad
2. Claim to be from a legitimate organization but there is no way you can check.
3. There is some emotional content e.g. here it is a "church" so no way Christians can be scammers right? Right? (No, they are not a church, they are some organized criminals in Nigeria probably).
4. Slightly odd turns of phrase in the English
5. A very tempting offer of

5. A very tempting offer of a large volume of work.
6. They try to get you invested by having you take a test. Sunk costs plus emotional hook that when you take the test and "pass" you feel pleased because your invested time and effort paid off and someone likes your work.
7. They want to pay by wire transfer or paypal. They will "overpay" you "by accident" and ask you to send some of the money back. You will do that because you think the payment is real and they paid money so you trust them now right? but what you will very soon find out is that the original payment was fraudulent and bounces so that your refund is made from your own money.
8. The scammers disappear with your cash. They have lots of fishes like you on the hook, you bit and paid and now you're history.

Please don't fall for this. Even if you really need work, this is not work, it is a waste of your time, you will get burned and end up paying your own money to some organized criminals.

Anything else needed to see a scam - stupid, primitive yet audacious scam?

Investigations, red flags, lengthy discussions, remaining doubts????

Even my cats are laughing uncontrollably.

My PM is really nice, patient, and helpful.

My first two invoices were paid.

Yes, the workflow is steady and plenty.

Why ID Feb 1

Brice Nagalingum wrote:

Not sure how usual the ID requirement is so I'm still wary of this.

They need a copy of your ID for their internal records, as they need to prove to their tax authorities that their translators are NOT working on or from US soil. And also that they truly are who they say they are.

Someone... Feb 1

IrinaN wrote:

...might be pretending to represent them and post such ridiculous job offers.

My workflow has been steady, but also normal.

20 movie scripts a month is normal.

A "movie script" that needs to be translated can be as short at 15 minutes, word count about 2,000.
