Burcu Demirörs, Lucrecia Jarab, and James Myatt team up to discuss how industry members are capitalizing on the challenges brought by COVID-19.

 

Burcu Demirörs is the co-founder and CEO of HeliCo Translation based in Turkey. She has been a translator and simultaneous interpreter actively working in the localization industry since 2009, with languages English, German, and Turkish. Burcu studied translation and interpreting at Dokuz Eylul University and simultaneous interpretation at the master's degree program at Hacettepe University in Turkey as the first “special student”. She translated millions of words and interpreted thousands of hours. She is giving translation and various language services with her team under the titles HeliCo Translation and HeliCo Simultaneous. She is a hard-working and determined individual with a motivated and creative mindset to help her start each day positively and do whatever it takes to reach her goals in life. Burcu is also one of the best woman paragliding pilots in Turkey, which is reflected in the name of her translation company. She believes that one should have a hobby to be passionate about and only by this means, one can stay motivated for growth in business.

Lucrecia Jarab is the Regional Manager in Asia at Translation Back Office, a Translation Company with offices in many countries around the world. Born in Argentina and living in Vietnam, she’s been working in the Translation and Localization Industry for 9 years. With knowledge and experience in languages, international marketing, market research, vendor management, business development, and project management, her job has given her the chance to travel and experience different amazing cultures all around the globe.
  James is a highly regarded language professional whose career began 20 years ago in Japan. He worked for NagaokaCity as an English teacher before relocating to France. James and his wife founded Word Connection, establishing offices in both France and Japan. The company has built an impressive reputation for providing superior Japanese translation and localisation services. James’ enthusiasm, openness and dedication have seen him build an extensive client base and many trusted partnerships.
  Moderator Anne-Marie Colliander Lind is a recognized force in the global language industry landscape. She has spent almost 30 years helping multinational organizations solve their language issues, serving in executive sales and management positions at leading service, technology and market research companies. She is the CEO of Inkrease, a management consulting company based in Sweden that assists companies in their growth and development strategies. Anne-Marie is a sought-after speaker and is engaged part-time as marketing director for LocWorld. She is also the co-organizer of the Nordic Translation & Interpretation Forum (NTIF).

In this panel, Jennifer Vela Valido and Alberto Ferreira will discuss how marketing and sales strategies have changed in light of the COVID-19 pandemic within the localization section.

 

After finishing her studies in Audiovisual Translation and Multimedia Localization in Spain, Jennifer started her career as a translator and entrepreneur and became the co-founder of the first audiovisual translation company in the Canary Islands, Spain (Subbabel).
From 2007 to 2012, Jennifer combined her role in the company as a Business Development Manager with several training courses in localization, internationalization, and innovation at entities such as the University of San Francisco (USA) or the University of Cambridge (UK).
Since 2012 Jennifer has been working in the Localization Team of Expedia Group, first as the Localization Quality Manager for the Spanish market (from 2012 to 2019), and later as a Localization Vendor Manager.
Jennifer is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Localization Quality Management while she works as a researcher and invited lecturer specializing in localization, linguistic quality control and new technologies in several universities, as well as a speaker at international congresses and conferences such as LocWorld, Languages and the Media, or Translating Europe Forum. In her spare time, she also manages the UK Chapter of Women in Localization, a global community for the advancement of women and the localization industry.

Alberto Ferreira is a UX research and globalization services expert with over ten years of experience in UX on both client and agency side. He is currently the User Research Manager at Vodafone UK and has worked on improving the digital experience of companies like Sony, the BBC, and Emirates.
He is the author of Universal UX: Building Multicultural Experience, a book on the specialised practices and implementations of UX across the globe. He was the host and curator of the Localisation Processes Forum at LocWorld for 5 years and is a regular speaker at international UX conferences like UXPA. He also devotes his time to mentor and tutor young UX students and practitioners at Kingston University in London.
A multidisciplinarian interested in topics ranging from Agile to persuasion design, he is passionate about the development of User Experience as an autonomous field and understanding the depth of the relationship between the human mind, reality, and digital technology.

  Moderator Kathrin Bussmann, Ph.D., is the Founder & President at Verbaccino Inc., a global marketing consultancy that helps brands attract, engage and retain more international customers. Her mission is to help start-ups and scale-ups succeed beyond their own borders by leveraging foreign market research, global-ready branding, and culturally-savvy marketing strategies for international expansion. Kathrin believes that in the Digital Age, even small brands can build a worldwide customer base. Her award-winning, interview-style audio show, The Worldly Marketer Podcast, is a weekly exploration of what it takes to “go global” in today’s digital, social, multilingual marketplace. As a German-Canadian born in Quebec, Kathrin grew up speaking English, French and German with equal fluency. She holds advanced degrees in Communication Studies and Linguistics, which eventually led her to focus on the intersection between content marketing and localization. In 2019, Kathrin co-founded the Eastern Canada chapter of Wormen in Localization (WLEC). She is also a member of the Globalization and Localization Association (GALA) and of The Global Chamber. She is based in Toronto, Canada.

Kirill Soloviev is the CEO & co-founder at ContentQuo, an Estonian🇪🇪 translation technology company that helps some of the largest translation organizations in the world manage their linguistic quality programs for MT and HT at scale. During his 17-year industry career, Kirill has served in diverse buyer-side and vendor-side roles, most recently as Global Director of Localization at Acronis, a $150M data protection and disaster recovery software firm. Kirill also co-organizes Localization Unconference in Tallinn, collaborates with TAUS, and loves consulting both new & seasoned localization pros about their careers.

István Lengyel is the founder of BeLazy (https://www.belazy.cat), the project management automation company that makes continuous localization efficient across the entire supply chain, and also works as technology consultant for Nimdzi Insights (https://www.nimdzi.com). Previously, he was one of the founders of Kilgray, the makers of memoQ, but also worked as a translator, and as Director for Customer Success for On Global. He holds several degrees in economics and translation, including a PhD in translation studies from the ELTE University of Budapest. He is passionate about technology, aligning interests, and believes that in ten years, machine learning and artificial intelligence will have a much more far-reaching effect in the society than most of us would ever imagine.
  Nancy Hähnel, Sales Director at Xillio, is the leader of client activities at the localization connector and integration company Xillio. Ask her about the way to transform your localization bottlenecks to an automated and structured process.
Previously Business Development Director at thebigword, Nancy has driven growth and created structure in the commercial activities at leading European LSPs including Cogen (Acolad) and Logos Group. Rock-solid, effective and practical, she possesses a practical and constructive approach to solving complex issues and can get any business engine running at full capacity.
  Adam is CEO and co-founder at ModelFront. He is a language learner and software engineer with experience at startups, Google Translate, Google Play and Adobe. Beyond machine translation, his interests include input correction, language identification, transliteration and synthetic data generation.

Maxim Motin is the presenter of SpeakUs (a solution provider that breaks language barriers at multilingual events) and is an organizer of conferences and online webinars. He is engaged in the development of projects that connect people to each other.

  Sandor Milovanovic is Global Head of Professional Services at Interprefy. Aimee Ansari, Maria Kania and Jeannette Stewart discuss how non-profit organizations have been affected in their localization efforts by COVID-19.

 

Over 200 million people are in need of assistance. Many, if not most, sit behind a wall, their needs invisible to us because of the language they speak. Languages that not even local aid workers speak. Aimee wants to help tear down that wall.
Aimee got her first job in international development because she spoke Russian. She went to Kyrgyzstan, where she quickly learned that while Russian was useful, she was only going to truly understand the hopes and desires of the women with whom she worked if she spoke Kyrgyz and Uzbek.
After 25 years working in the former Soviet Union, the Middle East, Eastern Europe and parts of Africa in conflict, natural disasters and development programs, Aimee has found that people want to be understood and to understand. Be it the tribal leader in Chad who wanted to figure how he could help get the young men in his village educated and stop the endless cycle of violence in the region or the young prostitute in Bangladesh who wanted to understand how AIDS is spread…the people she’s met just want to communicate.
Language and language technology gives us the opportunity to listen, to understand, to empathize and to build trust. That is why she does this work and why she is proud to be the Executive Director of TWB.

María Kania is an 18-year veteran of the localization industry and has held roles in sales, account management, and quality assurance. She currently works as a Director od Client Services at Transperfect leading a team of Account Managers out of Europe. She is a frequent presenter at industry events that include LocWorld and ELIA, and she has published numerous articles on various localization topics. Based in Barcelona, Maria is heavily involved with the local localization community, having opened the Barcelona chapter of Women in Localization. She currently holds the post of global Sponsorship Director within the organization. She enjoys mentoring and helping people grow professionally. She’s a runner, reader, traveler and a dreamer.
  Jeannette Stewart is a strategic consultant and works with mainstream brands helping them achieve global growth, business revitalization and transformation. She founded Translation Commons, an online volunteer-based public charity aiming to offer and share tools and resources and to facilitate community initiatives. She is the former CEO of CommuniCare, a life-science translation company with offices in London, Paris, Athens, Budapest and Los Angeles. Jeannette has been involved in high-profile projects such as the Genome Project and prototyping the online Unified Submission Process for the European Medicine Agency. Jeannette has founded, served on the board of directors, moderated and volunteered in various educational and health charities.
  Moderator Allison Ferch is the Executive Director of the Globalization and Localization Association (GALA). Over the past 10 years she has served GALA in several roles and provided leadership for many of the association’s programs and activities. As Executive Director, she leads operations at GALA and is responsible for the growth of the association, its financial stability, and for the expansion and delivery of member value. Allison has an undergraduate degree in Biological Anthropology and a Master’s degree in Library and Information Science. A lifelong athlete and a lifelong learner, she enjoys podcasts, reading, and all kinds of sports and athletic endeavors.

Renato Beninatto, Sarah Hickey and Belén Agulló García from Nimdzi will discuss some facts and figures from a general overview of the industry from the side of a market research and consulting company.

 

CEO and co-founder, Renato brings decades of experience everywhere he goes. With extensive experience in international consulting, market research, sales and marketing, Renato provides the strategic direction that helps Nimdzi better serve clients worldwide.

 As Chief Researcher, Sarah analyzes the language services market from all angles. Her experience as a translator and conference interpreter allows her to have a unique view of the industry. Her background in journalism has always led her down the path of critical thinking and objective reporting. Sarah leads the research for Nimdzi’s global market studies, such as the Nimdzi 100 and the Nimdzi Interpreting Index. Her research further focuses on Virtual Interpreting Technology (VIT). Sarah also still works as a freelance conference interpreter.
  With a BA in Translation and Interpreting Studies and an MA in Audiovisual Translation, Belén started her career back in 2011 in a game localization company, where she was soon promoted to PM, training specialist, marketing strategist and copywriter and, finally, translation manager. Then, she co-started a game localization company where she was in charge of the Quality and Innovation Department, surrounded by a great team and a bunch of language technologies. After six years, Belén embarked on the crazy adventure of doing a Ph.D. in Translation Studies, becoming a professional learner, researcher, and academic writer. She also teaches game localization and subtitling technologies in several MA programs in Spain and France. Now, she contributes to Nimdzi with her hands-on experience and research skills as Localization Researcher.
  Moderator Dave Ruane is Digital Content and Partnership Manager at XTM International. He started his 25 localization industry journey in technology and solutions roles, then moved into operations management, consultancy, and for most of the past 10 years he designed and deployed globalization business solutions for enterprises. Now he is building content and partner strategies which strengthen XTM's ability to expand and grow. He is a regular moderator and speaker at industry events, and co-founder of the Process Innovation Challenge; a platform for show-casing innovation in the localization industry. He is a self-confessed techie, is based in coastal Spain, and more often than not can be found near fly fishing water.
