This presentation will focus the psychological aspect of being satisfied with one’s current achievements and building for a better future. As work occupies so many hours of the day, personal satisfaction is an essential part of long-term success. The problem is that “success” is subjective, i.e., each person deals with his/her own needs and challenges and relates to freelance translation and interpretation differently. There is no single defining feature of success in translation, including in terms of income and quality. The goal is to appreciate today’s success and work towards achievable goals in the future, blocking out irrelevant and distracting outside messages.

Linguists know that it is crucial to deliver and demonstrate operational effectiveness. It is the best way to ensure that localization is constantly recognized in the business, truly embedded in global content supply chains, timely planned in global product/service roadmaps and properly resourced with the needed capacity and capabilities. Therefore the main challenge lies in how to define, manage, capture and measure localization effectiveness. Language Access Coalition of Canada is a grassroots coalition of 25+ agencies advocating for equitable language access in Canada. The Coalition organizes events, such as an annual Conference and webinars, creates educational opportunities and celebrates February 22 as a day of language advocacy in Canada. The objective of this session is to explore three unique approaches to language advocacy. One is the grassroots advocacy angle that includes tricks and tips on how to build a coalition to be able to successfully influence different levels of government and contribute to political platforms and policies. The second one will explore how community agencies and non-profits could become agents of social change by using dedicated funds not only to address the gaps in service but also to learn from them. Finally, the session will explore Indigenous language revitalization as advocacy practice the unique contribution of Museum exhibits, and the significance of connecting the Indigenous agenda to all other language advocacy efforts. This session hopes to inform translators about different ways in which they can mobilize and move forward equitable language agenda and inspire them to contribute and connect to their local NGOs and language agencies, Indigenous languages groups and political representatives in their communities who share similar views.

Years ago, many were ready to sentence that technology would replace traditional roles, such as Vendor management, but this trend highlights the strong need for building and nurturing human relationships. In the World Without Barriers celebrated by this year's International Translation Day, technology is what makes our world a little smaller, humans are who can make it a better place to live in.
