"Are robots about to take your interpreting work?"

The machines are coming for our interpreting work! We're all DOOMED! That's what we are told time and time again by big tech companies and startups alike. Is there any truth in this? After spending the best part of two years researching this topic for my upcoming book, this session will discuss what the state of machine interpreting actually is, where it's going and what that is likely to mean for interpreters in the near future.

The speaker, who started out as a translator and also became an interpreter almost 10 years into her career, will share tricks and tricks and lessons learned along the way.

    "Oh My Backup!"

Hardware and software solutions to keep your precious data available, safe and confidential

As a modern translator, you rely on technology for most of your daily duties at work. No matter how careful, orderly and cautious you are: at any given time, you are just one click away from disaster. Hardware failures, suboptimal installations, software bugs and crashes as well as the human factor, all sum up for a dangerous recipe where our valuable data —and our clients’— can be compromised, corrupted or lost forever.

And that is not good for business, believe me.

In this straight-to-the point, extremely actionable presentation we will identify the most common weak points in home office scenarios as far as data management is concerned, providing solutions to make sure that you never lose a single byte of data without spending a fortune in complex backup solutions.

We will also give concrete practical tips to keep your data safe at all times and shape a bulletproof B-plan to resume your work ASAP and minimize the damage in case everything —from persistent application crashes to fire all over the place— goes wrong.

Translation is both an area of academic study and a profession. Colleges do a good job teaching the theory. How well do they prepare students for the job market?

We want to present the perspective of translators who are working towards a Bachelors degree in Translation.
    • What is the ideal “practical” translation curriculum?
    • What limitations do colleges face in creating this curriculum?
    • How could the curriculum presented be improved?
    • What other obstacles are there to such improvement?

"Serial Offenders - A practical workshop on Audio Visual Translation with Technology and Talent"

Audiovisual (AV) translation is booming like never before, and we only just start to understand the transfer of spoken language to written language, and its impact on our work and the translation industry. Amazingly, the translation business AV translations is very separate from all the other parts of our industry, and many technological standards like the use of translation memory tools, automated QA and terminology work are still lagging behind.

This workshop is for linguists, who already work in the industry, or plan to try their luck with translation for entertainment - showing, how AV translation looks like, how technology can be used, and how it is already used today. It is a very wide area and might raise more questions, but will hopefully be a starting point for future insights.

background image for Specialization as a Success Strategy for Translators

    16:40 - 17:20 GMT FINISHED

"Specialization as a Success Strategy for Translators"

General translation tends to become a commodity, a market where translators are selected mainly based on price. In order to access the markets where good service providers are sought after by the clients, and paid the rates they deserve, you should consider specializing.

Rather than marketing yourself as a general service provider who can translate every kind of document, in any field of expertise, this presentation will focus on the advantages of narrowing your offer to a limited range of specialized fields.

This is a winning strategy that should help you develop, over time, a set of good clients that will appreciate your expertise and will be aware that the work of an expert does not come cheap. In this session, we will discuss:
    • Why specializing is a winning strategy, where its marketing and productivity benefits should outweight the cost of abandoning markets where you feel reasonably proficient.
    • How you should select your field of specialization, a key decision for your career that should take into account skills and well as passion.
    • Once a field was selected, how to develop your skills in that area to the point of becoming an expert.
    • And last but not least, how to market your services as a specialist in your selected area, in order to be recognized as such by clients and colleagues.

Now a traveling interpreter and a mom to a 4.5-year-old, I am a happy professional and as good as new. Having to learn these things the hard way, I decided to share my formula with fellow translators and interpreters to hopefully inspire someone to take better care of themselves.
