The National Mental Health Survey (NMHS 2016) found that the overall lifetime prevalence of mental illnesses of adults aged 18 years and above is 13.67%. The overall lifetime prevalence of common mental disorders (CMDs), is found to be 12.3%, that strikes nearly 6 times higher when compared to lifetime prevalence of severe mental disorders (SMDs), which is 1.9%. Further, it is estimated that 1 in 20 people in India suffer from diagnosable depression.
