स्रोत पाठ - अंग्रेजी A long, long time ago, in the ancient lands of India, known in those days as Bharatvarsha, a family quarrel grew into a bloody war. There had been wars before, and there have been wars since, but that mighty battle between warring cousins of the Kuru clan has become a part of the mythology and history of India. Told and retold a million times, the story of the Mahabharata is about defeat as well as victory, humility as much as courage. It is the greatest story ever told.
There are four cycles of time that rule our universe, which are known in Sanskrit as the four yugas. These are the Satya, the Treta, the Dwapara and the Kali yugas. The Mahabharata war was fought at the very end of the Dwapara yuga. And as the heroic Pandavas began their last journey, to find their place in heaven or in hell, the Kali yuga of our present, mortal times began.
It was almost three thousand years ago, in what is now northern India, that the Kuru kingdom flourished by the banks of the river Yamuna. It was here, in the city of Hastinapura and in nearby Kurukshetra, that the great battle was fought. The kings and princes who are the heroes of the tale were all descendants of King Bharata, and so it is known today as the Mahabharata. However, in the beginning it had a simple title and was known only as the ‘Jaya’, the song of victory.
अनुवाद - हिंदी बहुत समय पहले की बात है. तब प्राचीन भारत भूमि को भारतवर्ष के नाम से जाना जाता था. उस समय दो परिवारों के बीच आपस में एक झगड़ा शुरू हुआ, जो धीरे-धीरे एक ख़ूनी युद्ध में बदल गया. यूँ तो इससे पहले भी युद्ध हुए थे और इसके बाद भी कई लड़ाइयां हुई हैं, मगर कुरु वंश के चचेरे भाइयों के बीच लड़ा गया यह भयानक युद्ध अब भारत की पौराणिक कथाओं और इतिहास का हिस्सा बन चुका है. तब से यह कहानी लाखों बार बताई और दोहराई गई है. महाभारत की यह कहानी हार और जीत के बारे में तो है ही, साथ ही विनयशीलता और साहस के बारे में भी है. यह अब तक सुनाई गई सबसे महान गाथा है.
समय के चार चक्र हैं जिनके मुताबिक़ हमारा यह ब्रह्मांड चलता है. संस्कृत में इन्हें चार युग कहा गया है. ये युग हैं सत्य, त्रेता, द्वापर और कलियुग. महाभारत का युद्ध तब लड़ा गया था, जब द्वापर युग बस ख़त्म होने को था. जैसे ही वीर पांडवों ने स्वर्ग या नर्क के लिए अपनी अंतिम यात्रा शुरू की, उसी समय कलियुग यानी हमारा वर्तमान नश्वर काल शुरू हो गया.
क़रीब तीन हज़ार साल पहले, जो अभी उत्तर भारत है, वहां यमुना नदी के किनारे कुरु साम्राज्य फल-फूल रहा था. यहीं हस्तिनापुर शहर और उसके पास कुरुक्षेत्र के मैदान में वह महायुद्ध लड़ा गया था. इस कहानी के नायक सभी राजा और राजकुमार, राजा भरत के वंशज थे. इसीलिए इसे आज महाभारत के रूप में जाना जाता है. हालाँकि शुरू में इसका नाम सिर्फ़ 'जय' रखा गया था यानी विजय का काव्य.

आल्हा-ऊदल [कहीं-कहीं ऊदल की जगह रुदल भी लिखा मिलता है] की वीरगाथा गाने वाले लोक गायक मुस्लिम ख़लीफ़ा (60) बिहार के समस्तीपुर ज़िले में सरायरंजन प्रखंड अंतर्गत खालिसपुर गांव के रहने वाले हैं, और पिछले कई दशकों से फसलों की कटाई के सीजन में खेतों में घूम-घूम कर आल्हा ऊदल की वीरगाथा ढोलक बजाकर सुनाते हैं.
कटाई के सीजन में खेतों में घूम-घूमकर वह गाना-बजाना करते हैं. कटाई के सीजन में वह एक किसान के पास लगभग दो घंटे तक गीत सुनाते हैं और इसके एवज में 10 किलो तक अनाज उन्हें मिल जाता है. “धान, गेहूं और मक्के की कटाई के सीजन में ही हम खेतों में घूमते हैं.,” उन्होंने कहा. "एक फसल की कटाई में 10 दिन लग जाते हैं. तीन फसलों में एक महीना लगता है, इसलिए एक महीने खेतों में घूमते हैं." शादी के सीजन में भी उनकी डिमांड रहती है. “तीन महीने में 10 से 15,000 रुपए की कमाई हो जाती है,” वह कहते हैं.

Around April-May, during the harvest season for paddy, wheat and maize, he roams around farms with his dholak and sings for the farming community. In exchange for a performance of about two hours, he could get up to 10 kilograms of grain from the newly harvested crop. “It takes a month to harvest the three crops, so I spend my whole month in the fields,” he says. During the wedding season increased demand earns him Rs. 10,000-15,000 over three months.
