When we breathe in, our chest muscles push our ribs up and out, our diaphragm, that is the muscle under our lungs moves down. This makes the chest cavity expand as a result of which the lungs fill with air. When we breathe out, the chest muscles relax, our ribs move down, and our diaphragm moves up to squeeze the air out of lungs.
Fish breathe through their gills; earthworms breathe through their moist slimy skin; frogs breathe through their skin as well as lungs; insects breathe through air holes called spiracles; reptiles, birds and mammals breathe through their lungs, and plants breathe through stomata, the pores present in their leaves. The organs that are involved in the breathing process are called respiratory organs. The nose, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, bronchioles, lungs and diaphragm are the human respiratory organs; together they form the human respiratory system. Breathing is a part of the respiration process. Respiration involves intake and consumption of oxygen and release of energy and carbon dioxide.
