Obviously the wrong impression has been given.

What's particularly disappointing is to read misleading statements like this one from Henry:

"To clarify, like the ITI and other organizations -- see http://www.iti.org.uk/indexMain.html -- ProZ.com offers paid advertising to industry groups."

AFAIK, the ITI does not charge for listings in its international calendar of events. Similarly, I don't know of another T&I professional association that charges for listings of events that are likely to be of interest to members and othe readers.

For what it is worth, we have discussed with the ITI the idea of publishing the ITI calendar via ProZ.com, for free. To do that, the ITI needed a fee from us to cover their development costs. To be clear: under the arrangement under consideration, ProZ.com would pay to publish industry information, as a service to our members.

That is not a complaint - this is normal stuff. The ITI's offer is more than fair. After all, there are costs involved in these things, and responsible people, businesses (and yes, even non-profit associations), take steps to make sure their activities are sustainable.

By the way, it is partially in anticipation of this sort of functionality that the policy on advertising via the forums is being tightened up. Maybe the one should follow the other, but I hope you see the point. Blue Board postings and KudoZ terms are not allowed in the forums either.

Finally, yes, ProZ.com is a for-profit company dedicated to serving freelance translators. It is our goal to deliver exceptional value for a low cost, but we do this for a living, so we don't do it for free.
