Replacement for Microsoft Terminology Search May 23, 2023

Hi all — like many of you, I was quite saddened to hear about the MLP shutting down. Microsoft provides a part of their TM and glossary files to developers (a bit less than what's available on the current service as they have last been updated September 2020; but there's that!). termic currently supports +20 languages, the end goal obviously being to support all Microsoft-supported languages. It also has more search features compared to Microsoft's service, and I plan to work on it continuously to provide an even better search experience.

You can try it out here: https://termic.me/

I hope this tool will prove useful to you! Please let me know if you have any feedback.

API? May 24, 2023

Is this search facility based on an API that looks up in the live glossary or is it based on downloaded files?

It's based on downloaded files. More info about data collection are available in the README of the GitHub project: https://github.com/Spidersouris/termic

Microsoft does provide access to an API (https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/language/Microsoft-Terminology-API), but it is restricted to a few languages and is most probably going to be shutting down along with the portal.

Termic - Possibility of also implementing search from a selected target language to EN-us? May 25, 2023

Thanks, Enzo! That looks great.

Is there also the possibility of implementing a search function in the reverse direction from any one of the available target languages selected to EN-us??

(with the MLP it is possible for example to select French and then search only for the corresponding term in the index language English)

Keep up the good work!

Hi Sam — thank you very much for your enthusiasm! There are plans for that indeed. These last few days I've been focusing on backend changes for the code to be easier to maintain and to add such a possibility. The aim is for English as a target language to be added in a couple of weeks.

I'm also working on expanding the database with more strings that Microsoft had not included in order to compensate for the missing data in termic (VSCode localization strings for instance).

How to open Microsoft Collection Term Base with tmx file extension? May 29, 2023

Hello everyone,

I don't know whether someone already tried it out, but I found another method to do a quick search on Microsoft Collection Term Base file. This method however, only work on single language pair at a time (eg. EN-ID and vice versa). Try using Apsic Xbench to open the Microsoft tmx file then do a quick search in it.

Microsoft Term Base

There are a lot of downsides to this as I cannot update or add a new glossary (yet) to the file, changing the language pair, and removing the old glossary.

I think Microsoft doesn't care much about the portal as a lot of the terms inside are already outdated.

Also, I am glad that there is another alternative like https://termic.me/

TBX Jun 1, 2023

Microsoft says that you can download the existing terminology by clicking on the link, which I did. I downloaded the file in my language, only it has a TBX extension.

Apparently you can open TBX files with Trados. I have Studio 2019, doesn't work (or at least, I don't know how).

Does anybody know how to open it?

Hi Robert,
I converted the Microsoft TBX file into a Trados termbase file with Glossary Converter. It's free. I've used this termbase for my last project and the "fuuzzy match repair" worked like a charm

I am not so sure Jul 1, 2023

Just as test I tried to look for the Dutch translation of the word "file" (which is "bestand"), couldn't find it.

And the TBX file by the way, is a weak extract from the original.
