Jean-Philippe will share some background about the appeal of Martinique’s hospitals among neighboring islanders and how foreign patients are welcomed in French hospitals. More specifically, he will focus on the administrative formalities necessary to cover their hospitalization expenses and how translation and interpreting play a crucial role throughout the duration of a patient’s stay.

20:00 - 21:30 GMT FINISHED

"Configuration & Preferences in Wordfast Pro 5"

It is hard to master all the features and configuration possibilities in a program but being aware of what the program is capable of and understanding the rationale behind its interface can help you find what is useful for you and know where to look when you need something. In this workshop, we will take a tour through the Wordfast Pro 5 views, tabs, ribbons, buttons and settings menu. Using sample files, you will be able to test different configuration options and why they might be helpful for certain situations. Sample files will be provided. A laptop is required for this workshop, and you must install at least the demo version of Wordfast Pro 5.

background image for Self-Management, One Nudge at a Time

21:30 - 22:00 GMT FINISHED

"Self-Management, One Nudge at a Time"

Freelance translator Ruth Simpson will present some of the most interesting nuggets from the book “Nudge Management” that she translated recently, by Eric Singler. The book is based on findings in behavioural science to gain insight on why people behave the way they do, and how we can influence our own reactions and become more motivated and productive. By the end of this session, you will be able to explain what biases influence us when we are at work, brainstorm new ways to approach the tasks we need to do, deal better with distractions, and motivate yourself one nudge at a time.

13:00 - 14:00 GMT FINISHED

"Regular Expressions for Dummies"

Regular expressions are very powerful and open a full range of possibilities in different programs. In Wordfast Pro 5 they can be used to perform smarter filtering in the TXLF Editor, for example. Although fully mastering regular expressions is very complex, understanding some basics already allows you to find several uses for them. During this workshop we will discuss the concept of regular expressions and, through practical examples, test some simple ways to use them. Attend this workshop if you want to learn how to leverage regular expressions for smarter searches and filtering in Wordfast Pro and other programs.

14:00 - 14:30 GMT FINISHED

"Back-up & Disaster Recovery"

We all know that we should be backing up our work in case of a disaster, but when it comes to Wordfast, what exactly needs to be included and how can this best be done? This session will discuss the difference between backing up and archiving, compare various available backup options, and outline which Wordfast resources need to be backed up for recovery purposes. By the end of this session, participants will be able to understand the general backup process, choose appropriate backup hardware and/or services, and identify which resources in different Wordfast applications are key for backup and recovery.

15:00 - 16:30 GMT FINISHED

"Tips & Tricks for Optimal Handling of PDFs"

Many translators are reluctant to work with “dead” PDFs because formatting them for use with Wordfast after using OCR (optical character recognition) is too inefficient or daunting. But there are ways that translators and project managers can clean up files surprisingly quickly and easily. The information provided in this session will help users streamline the process of cleaning up and formatting files using marcros, advanced search-and-replace, and the free Word add-in TransTools, so they can work on dead PDFs knowing that they won’t waste time or money on prep, and that they can reap the benefits of leveraging TMs and glossaries even for these files. Great for cleaning up editable PDFs and their many mid-sentence hard returns, and for prepping files for alignment too!

background image for Best Practices for Reviewers

19:00 - 20:30 GMT FINISHED

"Best Practices for Reviewers"

This workshop will address best practices for linguists revising their own work, as well as for revisers only, proofreading or reviewing work from vendors in previous steps. It will cover a variety of aspects from recommended Preferences, Filtering, Transcheck, and TM & Terminology best practices. By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to mitigate the opportunity for error in review projects and recognize when they occur. Participants will also be able to use their glossaries as a quality control tool and filtering to focus their review efforts on problem areas and ensure consistency of edits and terminology. Sample files will be provided. A laptop is required for this workshop, and you must install at least the demo version of Wordfast Pro 5.

20:00 - 20:45 GMT FINISHED

"TMs & Glossaries in the Cloud"

Cloud storage and sync services are becoming increasingly prevalent among translators who work with both a desktop and laptop. However, syncing between two machines is not always as easy as it sounds, especially when complex databases are involved. By the end of this session, participants will know the best practices for storing their TMs and glossaries on any cloud service and share these resources between multiple machines.

20:45 - 21:30 GMT FINISHED

"Give me all my Features or I’ll Ruin your Life"

We will begin this session by asking users to brainstorm fixes, improvements, and new features they want to see implemented in their respective tool during the coming year. After brainstorming, we’ll play an interactive game to see which ones are users’ highest priority. Let your voice be heard so you get “all your features” by next year!
