(1) your top language pair translators are under-represented at ProZ.com
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Do you translate your top language pair?
Last year at ProZ.com there were {no data} job postings that required your top language pair translators -- and an additional {no data} or so passed through the directory (without being posted). In contrast to these numbers, there are currently fewer than ten ProZ.com members who advertise this language as their top working pair.
If you are an experienced translator and your top language pair is your primary language pair, please consider joining ProZ.com as a full member now. Under a special "guaranteed return on investment" offer, you will be entitled to a full refund of your membership investment if, within the year, you do not meet at least one new client. To be clear, this is not the standard "pro-rated" guarantee; you will get a full refund at the end of 12 months if you do not meet at least one new client.
This offer is limited to the first ten professionals who take advantage of it. A complete profile is required, and your top language pair must be your top working pair.
To join now, go to: http://www.proz.com/join/guaranteed_jobs
Currently, in addition to the guarantee, there is also a significant discounted fee for those in this pair who choose to join now. The discount will expire March 5, whether or not ten members join.
(2) New "Connect" directory sped up considerably
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The new "Connect" directory, an updated version of ProZ.com's industry-leading freelancer directory, had at times been slow. Late last week, it was sped up considerably.

This means that all the power of the new directory is available in a format as responsive as the traditional directory.

(3) "Connect" platform: Tools added to help companies manage external translators
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Connect" is ProZ.com's next generation platform supporting the work of translators and translation companies.
The February release of Connect updates focuses on new features to assist companies with managing and working with their vendors, ie. external translators.
How many times have you wondered if the information you have in your vendor database is really up-to-date? How easily can you check your vendor’s availability? How can you ensure that the vendor really received the file you sent? This release of connect helps to answer these questions for you.
For countries where tax information needs to be filed at the beginning of the year, having the correct information on file is critical. Well, now Connect has an update feature where you can verify the data you have on file matches the data in their ProZ.com profile. You can review and approve any differences before they are copied to your private vendor database.
Checking the availability of your vendors is one of the most important requirements before assigning any work. Previously, this could be a manual, labor-intensive process. With Connect, you can now check the availability of your own vendors in one step. First, you will want to make sure you have imported your commonly used vendors to Connect. Then, you can view their availability in one glance. If you don’t have the latest vendor information, you can send them a message to ask them to make sure they have updated their avaibility with their latest schedule.
Finally, sending files for translation can always be a challenge. If you use email, web download, or FTP – it can be difficult to know when a file has actually be downloaded! Do you know if your vendor has really started the job, or is still waiting for a file? Connect introduces a Send File feature with a Return Receipt. You can select to be notified when the file has been successfully downloaded, giving you the peace of mind that the work can now begin.
(4) ProZ.com's 6th translation contest - "Relationships" - is now open for submissions
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The 6th ProZ.com Translation Contest is currently underway, with the theme “Relationships”. This contest is the first of four translation contests scheduled for 2008.

There are a total of seven source texts available: English ("Eros" by Tim Parks), Spanish ("Ciao, Verona" by Julio Cortázar), Russian ("The Days of My Life" by Tatiana Shchepkina-Kupernik), German (Es kann Stress verursachen, wenn Paare zu wenig Sex haben! by Silvia Julkin), Romanian („Seara care cade”, by Mircea Cărtărescu) , Italian (Il sacro e il profano by Eugenio Scalfari) and Tamil ("Kallikaddu Ithikaasam" by Vairamuthu).

All source texts and languages are proposed by the community. The more source texts, the better! If you are interested in proposing a text for a future contest in your language, please contact Romina by email sent to { romina at proz.com } for guidelines and a list of upcoming themes. Note that if you submit the text, you will not be able to submit an entry. (You will be able to vote.)

Enter the contest now, show your skills to the community and have fun. But hurry! The submission deadline is March 5, 15 GMT.

Even if you do not participate by submitting an entry, you are invited to cast your vote and help decide on the winner in your language pair. The voting phase will start on March 18th.

To see the texts, submit your entry or vote, please go to http://www.proz.com/contests More information, and the option to subscribe to contest notifications, is available there!

(5) Your account type is now 'none of the above' - should it be?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Of the several account types available at ProZ.com, yours is set to "none of the above". Because of this you may not be getting the full benefit of the site. For instance, your profile will not be found by potential clients searching the directory.
If any of the following account types applies to you, you are advised to change your profile account type accordingly:
- Freelancer
- Company
- End customer
- Student
To set your account type to one of these, go to section 1 ("Account type") of your profile updater http://www.proz.com/quick_profile
If you have any trouble, or to suggest a new account type that would better meet your needs, please submit a support ticket at http://www.proz.com/support
"Once upon a time in Translatorland there lived a little Translator. (7) Quick tip: Rates
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

If you are a freelance translator, it is important to have a plan when it comes to rates. Consider using the following 4-step strategy to determine your pricing:

Step 1: Calculate the minimum rate you need to charge to produce your desired income. ProZ.com's online calculator will help you to consider things like holidays and expenses: http://www.proz.com/rates_calculator

Step 2: Quote at a rate higher than the minimum you require. Don't ever accept work below your minimum.

Step 3: Accept new work only at rates that are as good or better than your current rates.

Step 4: Repeat step 3.

That's it - it really is that simple! Remember, you are the only person who has the authority to decide what rates you will charge for your services. Be a professional - and charge accordingly!

(8) Outsourcer perspective: "Enhance your profile and be found"
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
For this month's newsletter, one ProZ.com outsourcer was asked to offer tips for translators on getting noticed. Here is what Ralf Lemster, Managing Partner at Ralf Lemster
Financial Translations GmbH, advises:
"Chasing public job postings and mass-mailing your CV might get you (some) work. The key question, though, is how to make sure outsourcers find you. Enhancing your visibility in the market is essential to raising your professional profile.
Remember that your ProZ.com profile is your 'shopfront' – the image you're portraying through your profile will determine your attractiveness to potential clients. A few hints:
* Maintain a professional approach – a holiday photograph in casual clothing might look nice on Facebook, but has no place on a professional page (unless you specialise in tourism, perhaps).
* Include information that is relevant to your area(s) of specialisation – this includes focus areas, key words, reference projects, etc. Information provided should be up to date.
* Don’t overload your profile – adding a large variety of 'specialist' skills will not appear credible, whereas a focused selection can portray an expert image.
Once your profile is up to speed, use the various options available to get noticed. One way is to participate in forum discussions – bear in mind that the ProZ.com forums are public, so think twice about venting about that 'stupid client' right after you hang up the phone. Be it KudoZ, forum discussions, offering resources on GlossPost: all site resources are designed to facilitate making contact, and being noticed.
You might consider helping to localise parts of the site, and/or have a go at moderating a forum. Don’t forget ProZ.com conferences and powwows – as virtual as this industry may be, meeting people is fun, and will help you build your personal network. Consider giving a presentation at a conference: this might be a challenge at first, but one well worth taking, as you will find others turning to you for advice, and possibly to share projects.
One more thing about networking: don't just target potential clients – actively maintaining relationships with peers in your field(s) of specialisation will not only keep you close to the market, but will help your business. If the market knows about what you do, and perceives you as a professional, chances are that jobs will come your way.
Of course, this is not an overnight process: building a market presence takes several months at least, possibly a couple of years before you really see the full effect. In my view, this investment is certainly worthwhile – particularly given the more precise search tools available to outsourcers (Connect in particular). To give an example, I was looking for a specialist to take on a rather complex user manual for a financial markets trading system, in a language pair which I don't cover with my team. Through Connect, I could narrow the search to a handful of professionals within a few minutes, and found the right person for the job – who had a complete, professional profile listing the relevant qualifications.
So, instead of chasing clients, make sure attractive clients find you."
