Agency builds TMs with MTs Autor wątku: traductorchile

I was once warned about mentioning an outsourcer in a forum, but I suppose I can mention the case of an eastern agency that very recently offered the following job for the pair English to Spanish (LA): ….Editors (proofreaders) of the output of machine translation (MT) of an on-going large volume project for feeding their translation memory (TM). Not only do they offer a ridiculous fee for the job, one requirement was to be a beginner or early-career linguist, so probably the quality of the product will follow suit with these factors. In my view these kinds of practices reflect a high degree of negligence with their customers, something that violates Proz.com’s (Professional Guidelines) that many of us have endorsed. On the other hand, if this is the kind of TM’s that these agencies use, the translator that works for them, in this case, and in the future, should consider that he can be “persuaded” to use a TM that instead of simplifying his work, most probably will make his work much more difficult (if he wants to deliver a good quality job) or he might come into disrepute delivering a mediocre product or not being able to meet the deadlines “imposed”. Furthermore, I believe this kind of practice can build distrust towards the use of translation memories by translators, however cautious one might be in their usage. ▲ Collapse | | | If that is what they want... | Sep 8, 2010 |

I can't see anything wrong with the approach. This is what they want, and this is what they get. I am sure they are not that deluded that they think they will have a great memory with that method. | | | traductorchile Chile Local time: 20:57 angielski > hiszpański + ... NOWY TEMAT
Well, I don't think it's a question of what they think (I couldn't care less), it's a question of the effect it has on the trust that customers give us as translators, that we are trying to do the best possible job, not like in this case where these agencies are trying to do the worst possible job. I believe these kind of practices can affect general trust if they aren't clearly pinpointed. | | |

Good luck for this translation brokers, not a translation enterprise imho (as their will not stay in business for a long time...). If you pay peanuts, you get monkeys. Neither responsible professional translators, nor responsible customers should use the services of such translation brokering agency and we are able and entitled to do so. That's all. It is completely idiotic to create a memory through an MT tool when today all the CAT tools in the market are able to use both (human beeings and MT) at the same time. Lets coin a new term and make it fashionable in the translation acronyms wild: WYPIWYG (What You Pay Is What You Get...)

Yes, I think I've heard that term before, somewhere. Maybe if we use it regularly enough, some day it will STAND-OUT in Proz.com's main pages and other translation related sites. By the way, it can be a noun but it can also be a verb, like:"don't you WYPIWYG me, I want a good translation, period (customers comment); I don't want to WYPIWYG anyone, I want to do a good translation, nothing less (translators comment). It might also have a derivative like WYPIWaging, that would be some entit... See more Yes, I think I've heard that term before, somewhere. I leave you these as mi contribution to the diccionary. ▲ Collapse | | | To report site rules violations or get help, contact a site moderator: You can also contact site staff by submitting a support request » Agency builds TMs with MTs Anycount & Translation Office 3000 | Translation Office 3000
