English to Greek Medical Psychology

XXX is a head occupational therapist in a sectorised service for older people in an inner city. She has a small caseload of people with functional illnesses but specialises in working with people with dementia, particularly in its early stages. Some of her time is spent within an assessment ward in the local hospital; her base is a shared office with her nursing and social work colleagues.
Much of her clinical work is around supporting people during the difficult time when they are first diagnosed as having dementia. Karen plans with individuals how they can maintain as much independence as possible, especially in the areas they place as highest priority, and teaches memory retraining techniques. A lot of time is spent supporting carers and providing them with information to aid their understanding of dementia, as well as working together with families and carers building up portfolios of photographs, personal stories and memories and information connected to the person’s past and current interests and important life events. Karen sometimes assesses for simple adaptive equipment and advises on physical problems that are impeding the person’s inde-pendence in daily living skills.
Karen leads a team of four occupational therapists and an occupational therapy technical instructor, provides supervision for two generic support staff and regularly takes students for clinical placements. She is a visiting lecturer for the local occupational therapy course. She feels passionate about the value of working with older people and wants to influence new graduates’ attitudes to this area of work.
Karen is recognised as having considerable experience in her field and is a member of the trust’s elderly services strategy team. She is ¬working on a current research project with the consultant psychogeriatrician and nurse specialist, looking at practice within the inpatient assessment ward.
