Spanish term

les impondrá

Spanish to English Art/Literary Certificates, Diplomas, Licenses, CVs
At a ceremony awarding honorary degrees:

Cuando el presidente se dirija a ustedes por su nombre, deberán levantarse y quitarse la toga; una vez concluida la laudatio, se acercarán al estrado y el presidente les impondrá el birrete, el anillo, los guantes blancos y les hará entrega del diploma; mientras, les colgarán en la espalda las cintas de terciopelo con el color de sus respectivas disciplinas.

Does this mean that the president will place the cap, the ring, the white gloves *on you*? That's how I understand it, but someone putting gloves on someone isn't something I remember ever seeing, so I thought I might have the meaning wrong. Thanks in advance.

Thanks so much for your suggestions This is what I have so far. I was already using "present" for the diploma that follows. Maybe "award" would work for the diploma then? I think confer on and award would be perfect if this were the degree itself, but imponer here refers to the cap, ring and gloves:
When the president addresses you by name, you must stand and remove your robes; as soon as the laudatory speech concludes, you will approach the podium and the president will place the cap and the ring on you, present you with the white gloves, and present you with the diploma; meanwhile, the velvet ribbons with the colors of your respective disciplines will be hung on your backs.

So, the query sentence would be something along these lines:
"The Chair/President/Rector/Officer will present you/them with the cap, the ring, and the white gloves and hand over the diploma.
Example sentence:

As every year we hand over the diploma to our graduates...

Thanks!
agree philgoddard : This gets around the gloves issue. "Present you with the cap, ring, white gloves, and diploma."

to put on, to place

No creo que el presidente les ponga a los estudiantes los guantes, la imagen que me viene a la cabeza es que les dará los guantes para que se los pongan ellos mismos.

neutral Andrew Bramhall : Yes, but not "place";

Since it is an honorary degree, I think terms like "confer" and "award" would be quite appropriate.
