Source text - Spanish «Probad a decir en una cena familiar que el vino no es saludable. Veréis la que se lía. Yo tuve el valor de explicarlo hace poco en la sección “Gente Sana” que tengo en Radio Nacional de España y no tardó en llamar por teléfono una mujer enfadadísima. Me acusó algo así como de manipulador y mentiroso por haber afirmado que el vino tiene alcohol. Que si cómo me atrevo, que si cómo es posible que un servicio público permita esto. ¿Mi respuesta? Pues que sí, querida señora, que el vino es una bebida alcohólica, se ponga como se ponga. Juraría que no la convencí. A ver si os convenzo a vosotros.
El caso es que si yo quisiera caer bien a todo el mundo diría que una copita de “buen vino” no hace daño a nadie. Pero no quiero caer bien a todo el mundo, con caer bien a mi mujer me basta. De hecho, si os queréis ganar el cariño y el afecto de vuestros semejantes, no os hagáis nutricionistas. Hay muchos motivos por los que los nutricionistas (al menos los mínimamente serios) caemos mal al común de los mortales: por las “galletitas”, por las “patatitas”, por el “jamoncito”…
Es más, el otro día se me ocurrió la siguiente definición de nutricionista: ser humano que si ve a alguien desnudo por la calle con un croissant en la mano, se queda mirando el croissant.
Pongámonos serios y hablemos del vino, pero antes debo advertiros de que lo que voy a decir a continuación es del todo extrapolable a la cerveza o a cualquier otra bebida alcohólica. Vamos allá. ¿Habéis escuchado o leído que el vino ejerce beneficios en corazón? Os han mentido vilmente. Voy a leer lo que opinó la Organización Mundial de la Salud en 2012 en su documento “Alcohol in the European Union” (1): “El alcohol es perjudicial para el sistema cardiovascular”.
Vaya, pues “perjudicial para el sistema cardiovascular” no parece sinónimo de “bueno para el corazón”.
¿No os fiáis de la OMS? ¿Creéis que la cita está obsoleta? Pues en la siguiente foto leeremos la opinión de la Comisión Europea (2).
Para la Comisión Europea “Un consumo moderado de alcohol aumenta el riesgo a largo plazo de sufrir cardiopatías”. ¿Tampoco os fiáis de la Comisión Europea? Hacéis mal. Sea como sea, es momento de acudir a una extensa revisión de 56 estudios epidemiológicos publicada el 10 de julio de 2014 en la revista British Medical Journal (3).
La conclusión de esta rigurosa investigación es bien clara: “el consumo de alcohol aumenta los eventos coronarios en todos los bebedores, incluyendo aquellos que beben
[entre comillas] ‘moderadamente’”. Y pongo entre comillas lo de “moderadamente” porque en realidad debería denominarse “de bajo riesgo” -que no “de nulo riesgo”-). Eso de “beba con moderación” no es más que un imperativo que persigue normalizar el consumo de alcohol o incrementarlo, como explicó el doctor Juanjo Cáceres en su libro “Consumo inteligente“.
En concreto, cada año mueren 780.381 personas por enfermedades cardiovasculares atribuibles al consumo de alcohol, según supimos en abril de 2016, en la revista BMC Public Health. (4) Pero quizá hayáis escuchado o leído que el consumo “moderado” de alcohol no sólo protege al corazón, sino que previene la mortalidad. Para entender que tampoco es cierto, nada mejor que acudir a una reciente investigación coordinada por el doctor Tim Stockwell en la revista Journal of Studies on Alcohol and Drugs (5).
El estudio concluye lo siguiente: “el bajo consumo de alcohol no ejerce beneficios netos en la mortalidad al compararlo con la abstinencia de por vida o el consumo ocasional de alcohol”.
Es posible que haya quien piense: “este señor dirá lo que quiera, pero yo he visto con mis propios ojos un estudio que demuestra que los abstemios mueren más pronto que los no abstemios”. Pues sí, yo también he visto con estos ojos esa clase de estudios. ¿Necesito ir al óptico optometrista? ¿O quizá sois vosotros los que lo necesitáis? Para resolver el enigma debemos preguntarnos lo siguiente: ¿por qué hay estudios que han observado (que no “demostrado”) que las personas abstemias presentan un mayor riesgo de mortalidad que quienes realizan un consumo bajo o “moderado” de alcohol? Pues por tres razones:
1.- Porque tales estudios no han tenido en cuenta que buena parte de los abstemios antes eran alcohólicos (y lógicamente su salud será peor).
2.- Porque también buena parte de los abstemios lo son porque padecen una enfermedad incompatible con tomar alcohol. Y lo que incrementa su mortalidad no es el hecho de ser abstemios, sino que ya padecen una enfermedad.
3.- Y ahora viene la tercera razón. Lo que diré ahora se basa, sobre todo, en estudios como este, publicado en febrero de este año por el doctor Timothy S. Naimi y sus colaboradores en la revista científica Addiction (6).
Como es un punto crucial de esta charla, os ruego que me prestéis toda vuestra atención. Resulta que las personas que toman alcohol “con moderación” son diferentes a las que no lo toman con moderación en muchos aspectos. Lo explicaré con una pequeña metáfora. Imaginemos que ubicamos en la mitad derecha de una gran sala repleta de gente a todas las personas que tienen el último modelo de iPhone en su bolsillo, y en la otra mitad a las que no lo tienen. Es muy probable que si hacemos un estudio prospectivo para evaluar el riesgo de mortalidad observemos que quienes tienen el iPhone presentan un menor riesgo de mortalidad. ¿Es por las “propiedades protectoras” del iPhone? No, es porque dichas personas tienen más dinero, un factor crucial para determinar el riesgo de mortalidad a largo plazo (7). Como se suele decir, nuestro riesgo de mortalidad no está tanto en el código genético como en el código postal. Pensemos ahora en el vino. Si ubicamos en la mitad derecha de esa imaginaria sala a quienes toman a diario dos copas de vino, en el caso de los hombres, o una en el caso de las mujeres, y en la otra mitad ubicamos a quienes o bien son abstemios o bien toman mucho alcohol, y evaluamos el riesgo de mortalidad a largo plazo de ambos grupos, probablemente constataremos que el grupo de la derecha presenta un menor riesgo de mortalidad. ¿Es por el vino? Pues no, es porque es un grupo que no solo se distingue en ser moderado con el alcohol, sino también en otras características. Porque, por un lado, resulta que las personas que toman alcohol con moderación suelen ser moderadas en el resto de sus hábitos y tienen menos comportamientos peligrosos. Y eso disminuirá lógicamente su riesgo de mortalidad. Suele ser, también, un colectivo con un mayor poder adquisitivo (viven en barrios más ricos), con un mayor capital social, con más cultura, que hace más deporte, etc (8). Todo eso influye en su riesgo de mortalidad mucho más que el supuesto efecto positivo del vino…que resulta que se diluye en los estudios bien diseñados, como acabamos de ver.
Pero eso no es todo. A continuación entenderéis por qué si los nutricionistas viésemos a ese nudista con una copita de vino en la mano también miraríamos la copita de vino.
Resulta que el consumo de bebidas alcohólicas se relaciona con el riesgo de cáncer. En 2015, la OMS, en su “Informe Mundial de Situación sobre Alcohol y Salud” concretó que “Un consumo tan bajo como una bebida diaria causa un aumento significativo del riesgo de algunos tipos de cáncer” (9).
Y en noviembre de 2016, el Fondo Mundial para la Investigación del Cáncer detalló que “existen evidencias científicas sólidas de que el alcohol incrementa el riesgo de 6 cánceres: mama, intestino, hígado, boca/garganta, esófago y estómago” (10).
El dibujo de la copa de vino que aparece en el “tuit” del Fondo Mundial para la Investigación del Cáncer ni lo he puesto yo ni es casual. Esta entidad dibuja una copa de vino precisamente porque eso de que el vino no cuenta como bebida alcohólica no sólo lo piensa esta mujer que llamó a mi programa de radio, lo piensa mucha más gente. Pero la cosa no acaba aquí, dado que en la foto aparece también esta recomendación: “Para la prevención del cáncer lo mejor es no beber alcohol”. Sumemos esta consideración del American Institute For Cancer Research: “Cada bebida alcohólica diaria puede aumentar de un 10 a un 12% el riesgo de padecer cáncer de mama” (12).
Podemos resumir lo dicho hasta ahora indicando que hoy tenemos claro que no hay un consumo seguro de alcohol. Pretender convencernos de que el alcohol ejerce efectos positivos sobre la salud es algo así como barrer el comedor dando golpes con la escoba a los muebles, a los jarrones, a la televisión o a las macetas. ¿Estás limpiando, o más bien arreglas una cosa y estropeas otra? Con la diferencia de que si barres haces algo positivo, mientras que, como hemos visto, no existen pruebas sólidas de que el alcohol tenga ninguna clase de efecto positivo sobre la salud, y sí tenemos serios motivos para pensar que supone un notable riesgo.
Todo lo anterior es más preocupante si sabemos que tomar alcohol es algo que hacemos 9 de cada 10 españoles, y que a más edad, más alcohol consumimos, y que, de hecho, tomamos más calorías a partir del alcohol que de las sanísimas legumbres (13, 14).
¿Y por qué estamos todos tan convencidos de que el vino es saludable? Hay muchos motivos: Industria codiciosa, Famosos ambiciosos, Sanitarios negligentes, Charlatanes, Medios irresponsables y Mala legislación (15). De todas maneras, creo que vale la pena centrarnos en dos de dichos motivos.
El primer motivo es una legislación demasiado laxa con respecto al control de la publicidad de las bebidas alcohólicas. De hecho, existen expertos, como el abogado Francisco Ojuelos, que opinan que en las botellas de vino, deberíamos leer una advertencia sanitaria, similar a la que encontramos hoy en las cajetillas de tabaco (16).
Y el segundo motivo que quiero comentar es el marketing. Vuelvo a citar a la Organización Mundial de la Salud, en este caso su texto titulado “Alcohol en la Unión Europea” y publicado en 2012 (1). En la página 100 encontramos esta frase: “El marketing de bebidas alcohólicas es multifacético, estratégico y a largo plazo […] persigue exaltar los beneficios y eliminar las barreras al consumo”.
En la siguiente foto, tomada por un servidor en agosto de 2015, vemos botellas de vino en cuyo envase encontramos unas cuantas “multifaces”: las caras de los miembros de Coldplay, de Penélope Cruz, Pierce Brosnan o el ya difunto David Bowie (17).
Si eso no es asociar el alcohol con la cultura, con el éxito social, con los triunfos deportivos, con el poder económico o con la fama, que baje Dios y lo vea.
¿Qué os parecería si en una cajetilla de tabaco apareciera la cara de Penélope Cruz?
Dicho esto, es momento de ver la gráfica más importante de esta charla, basada en un artículo publicado por Nutt y colaboradores en 2010 en la revista Lancet (18). En la transparencia veremos el daño ocasionado por diversas drogas, ordenado de más daño a menos daño. Lo interesante es que la gráfica valora no solo el daño que causa la droga al usuario, sino también el que causa a terceras personas. ¿Queréis saber cuál es la droga más dañina? Ahí la tenéis.
El alcohol, cómo no. Porque además de ser la segunda causa de mortalidad prevenible en España (19), es un factor causal en más de 200 enfermedades y trastornos (20), y está implicado en muchísimos casos de accidentes de tráfico, abortos, violaciones, otros tipos de agresiones o suicidios. Un ejemplo: una de cada 63 mujeres que beba alcohol en el embarazo dará a luz a un bebé con un grave trastorno denominado “síndrome alcohólico fetal” (21, 22).
Si estáis pensando que jamás habéis visto ninguna de las situaciones anteriores os diré que yo tampoco he visto en los 26 años que hace que tengo el carnet de conducir ningún accidente mortal, pero eso no significa que no existan.
En fin… Estoy acabando esta charla y traigo dos reflexiones finales. Si alguien os dice que el consumo moderado de alcohol es bueno, pensad de dónde procede la información. El único mensaje válido al que debemos sumarnos todos los sanitarios es el auspiciado por la Organización Mundial de la Salud: cuanto menos alcohol, mejor (23). Sobre todo porque cada año mueren 3,3 millones de personas en el mundo a causa del alcohol (24).
Os ruego, por último que miréis esta portada de un libro de la OMS sobre alcohol y salud (8). En ella vemos un famoso cuadro de Renoir. ¿Qué veis en él? Yo, veo demasiado alcohol.
Pero al ver el cuadro pienso algo más: que el alcohol está instaurado en nuestra sociedad desde hace mucho, muchísimo tiempo. ¿Significa eso que no hay nada que hacer? Yo creo que sí. Quizá soy un ingenuo, pero aún conservo algo de la pueril esperanza con la que comencé a estudiar nutrición humana y dietética. Lo que me lleva a una frase de Dickens. La pronunció Agnes, el más bondadoso de los personajes de su novela David Copperfield. Ella, como yo, confía en que en un lejano día “el amor y la verdad acaben saliendo victoriosos sobre todas las injusticias y las desgracias de este mundo”.

Translation - English Is that “little glass of wine” a healthy daily option?
At a family dinner try saying that wine is not good for your health. You will see what a fuss it causes. I was brave enough to explain this a short while ago during my regular spot called Healthy People (“Gente Sana”) on Spanish National Radio (Radio Nacional de España). Almost immediately a very angry woman was calling the programme accusing me of being some sort of manipulative liar for stating that wine contains alcohol. “How dare you?”she wanted to know and “how could a public service broadcaster permit this type of thing?”. My response? Well, yes my dear woman, wine is an alcoholic drink, no matter how you look at it. I would swear that I didn’t manage to convince her, though. Let’s see if I can convince you.
If it were the case that I wanted to be popular with everyone then I would say that a little glass of “good wine”does not harm anybody. But I don’t want to be popular with everyone; so long as my wife likes me then that’s good enough for me. In fact if you want to win the love and affection of those around you then do not become nutritionists. There are many reasons why nutritionists (or at least those who are just a little bit serious) don’t appeal to the average person on the street; such as those “little biscuits”, “little bag of crisps”or “little bit of ham”…
In fact, the other day I thought up this definition for a nutritionist: a human being who sees a person naked on the street with a croissant in their hand and then proceeds to focus on the croissant!
So let’s get serious and talk about wine. But before doing so I should warn you that what I’m about to say is also totally applicable to beer or to any other alcoholic drink. Let’s go. Have you ever heard or read that wine is beneficial for your heart? Well you have been brazenly lied to. I’m going to read the conclusion of the World Health Organisation (WHO) from its 2012 study “Alcohol in the European Union”(1): “Alcohol is dangerous for the cardiovascular system”.

All right, well “Alcohol is dangerous for the cardiovascular system”does not seem to be synonymous with “good for the heart”.
Don’t you trust the WHO? Are you thinking that this reference may be obsolete? Well in the next image we will read the opinion of the European Commission (2).

In the view of the European Commission “Over the long term a moderate consumption of alcohol increases the risk of suffering from heart problems”. You don’t trust the European Commission either? That’s not so good. Well, whatever the case, it’s time to turn to an extensive review of 56 epidemiological studies published in the British Medical Journal (3) on the 10thof July, 2014.

The conclusion of this rigorous investigation is quite clear: “the consumption of alcohol increases the number of coronary events in all drinkers, including those who drink (in inverted commas) ‘moderately’”. And I’m using inverted commas around “moderately”since this should be read as “low risk”(and not “no risk”). The advice to “drink moderately!”(or “sensibly!”) is no more than a recommendation which seeks to normalise alcohol consumption, or to increase it, as explained by Dr Juanjo Cáceres in his book Intelligent Consumption (“Consumo inteligente“).
Looking at the hard numbers, it was shown by the journal, BMC Public Health, in April 2016, that 780,381 people die annually from cardiovascular diseases that can be attributed to alcohol (4). But perhaps you have heard or read that a “moderate”consumption of alcohol not only protects the heart but also that it reduces the rate of mortality. In order to understand why this is not true either, we can do no better than to turn to a recent investigation coordinated by Dr Tim Stockwell in the Journal of Studies on Alcohol and Drugs (5).

The conclusion of this study was as follows: “a low level of alcohol consumption leads to no net benefits in terms of mortality when compared with lifelong abstinence or the occasional consumption of alcohol”.
It’s possible that some of you may be thinking that “this gentleman can say what he likes, but I have seen, with my own two eyes, a study which shows that teetotallers die sooner than those who drink”. Well, yes, I have also seen with my own eyes, these types of studies. So do I need to pay a visit to the opticians? Or perhaps it’s you who needs to make an appointment? In order to resolve this enigma we need to ask ourselves the following: why are there studies which have observed (although not “demonstrated”) that teetotallers show a higher risk of mortality than those people who exhibit a low or “moderate”level of alcohol consumption. Well, for three reasons:
Because these types of study have not taken into account the fact that a significant proportion of teetotallers are former alcoholics (and that logically their health will be worse).
Also because a significant number of teetotallers abstain from drinking since they suffer from an illness which is incompatible with the consumption of alcohol. Here, what increases the rate of mortality is not being teetotal as such, but rather the fact that they already suffer from an un underlying illness.
And now comes the third reason.What I’m going to say now is based, above all, on studies such as this one, published in February 20017 by Dr Timothy S. Naimi and his colleagues in the scientific journal, Addiction (6)

Since this is a crucial point in my presentation I would ask you to give me your full attention. It turns out that the people who drink alcohol “in moderation”are, in many respects, different to those who cannot be described as such. I’m going to explain this with a little metaphor. Let’s imagine that we are in a big auditorium full of people and that we divide them into two equal groups; putting all those with the latest model of iPhonein their pocket on the right hand side and those who don’t have one on the other side. It’s very likely that if we were to do a prospective study to measure mortality risk, we might observe that those with the latest iPhone demonstrated a lower risk of mortality. Is this because of the “protective properties”of the iPhone? No, it’s because these people have more money, a crucial factor in determining the risk of mortality over the long term (7). As is often said, our risk of mortality is not so much in our genetic code as in our postal code. Let’s think now about wine.
Going back to that imaginary auditorium we’ll put all those males who have two glasses of wine every day (and one glass a day in the case of females) on the right hand side, and on the other side we’ll put those people who are either teetotal or who drink large amounts of alcohol. If we were then to evaluate the long term mortality risk of both groups we would probably find that the group on the right showed a lesser level of risk. Is this down to the wine? Well, no, it’s because this group won’t only show signs of moderation in relation to alcohol but also in terms of their wider life habits. So, on the one hand it turns out that the people who take alcohol moderately also tend to be moderate in other parts of their lives and are inclined to have less dangerous behaviour patterns. And logically that will diminish their risk of mortality. On the other hand, this group will also tend to have a higher level of purchase power (and live in richer areas) with increased social capital and cultural levels and higher participation rates in sports etc (8). All of this has a far greater influence upon their mortality risk than the supposedly positive affect of wine…which turns out to be diluted in well designed studies, as we have just seen.
But that’s not all. Next, you’re going to understand why, if nutritionists such as myself were to see that nudist from before with a little glass of wine in their hand, then we would also be looking primarily at the wine.
In turns out that the consumption of alcoholic drinks is also related to the risk of cancer. In 2015 the WHO in its “World Report on the Situation of Alcohol and Heallth”(“Informe Mundial de Situación sobre Alcohol y Salud”) stated that: “A level of consumption as low as one drink per day causes a significant increase in the risk of some types of cancer”(9).
And in November 2016 the World Cancer Research Fund pointed out that: “Solid scientific evidence exists that alcohol increases the risk of six types of cancer: breast, intestinal, liver, mouth/throat, oesophageal and stomach”(10).

The image of the glass of wine that appears in the tweet sent out by the World Cancer Research Fund is not something that I have added. Nor is it a coincidence. This organisation uses the picture of the wine glass precisely because of the widespread belief – and not only of that woman who called me up on the radio – that wine does not count as an alcoholic drink. But things don’t finish there, given that the photo also contains the recommendation that: “For the prevention of cancer it’s best not to drink alcohol”. Let’s also add this observation from the American Institute For Cancer Research: “Every daily alcoholic drink can increase the risk of suffering from breast cancer by 10 to 12 percent”(12).

We can summarise what has been said up to now by asserting that today it’s clear that there is no safe level of alcohol consumption. Trying to convince ourselves that alcohol offers positive effects to our health is a bit like sweeping out our dining room while at the same time banging into the furniture, the vases, the TV or the flower pots. Are you cleaning, or is it more a case of fixing one thing while damaging another? The difference is that at least with your sweeping you are doing something positive. As we have seen, in the case of alcohol there is no solid proof that it has any type of positive health effect; indeed we have serious reasons for thinking that it represents a notable risk.
All this becomes more worrying if you take into account that drinking alcohol is something that nine out of 10 Spaniards do and that as we get older we drink more. Indeed we take more calories in the form of alcohol than we do by eating from that a super healthy food group – pulses (13, 14).
And why are we all so convinced that wine is healthy? There are many reasons: a greedy industry, ambitious celebrities, negligent health services, con artists, an irresponsible media and poor legislation (15). Whatever the precise case, I believe that it’s worthwhile focussing on two of these explanations.
The first reason concerns legislation which is too lax when it comes to regulating the advertising of alcoholic drinks. In fact there are experts such as the lawyer, Francisco Ojuelos, who believe that bottles of wine should come with a government health warning similar to that which applies to cigarette packets (16).

And the second explanation that I want to look at is marketing. Again I’m going to quote from the WHO; this time from its report called “Alcohol in the European Union”published in 2012 (1). On page 100 we have this sentence: “The marketing of alcoholic drinks is multifaceted, strategic and long term […] it seeks to highlight the benefits of alcohol consumption and eliminate the obstacles to this”.
In the following photo which I took myself in August 2015 we can see some bottles of wine whose labels are adorned by the “multi-faces”of some well known individuals; namely: the members of Coldplay, Penelope Cruz, Pierce Brosnan and David Bowie (now deceased) (17).

If that doesn’t associate alcohol with popular culture, social success, sporting triumphs, economic power or with fame then may the good Lord strike me down.
What would you think if you were to see the face of Penelope Cruz on a cigarette packet?
Having said all that, it’s now time to see the most important image of this presentation, which is based upon an article published by Nutt and his colleaguesin the Lancet in 2010 (18). This slide shows the amount of damage caused by a diverse range of drugs arranged in order from the most to the least damaging. What’s interesting here is that the data takes into account not only the damage done to the users of the drugs but also to third parties. Do you want to know what the most damaging drug is? Well there you have it.

Well, well, it’s alcohol. Because apart from being the second most frequent cause of preventable mortality in Spain (19) it’s also a causal factor in more than 200 illnesses and disorders (20). Additionally, it’s implicated in a huge number of traffic accidents, abortions, rapes, other types of aggressive behaviour and suicides. To give one example: one of every 63 women who drink alcohol during pregnancy will give birth to a baby suffering from a serious disorder known as “fetal alcohol syndrome”(21, 22).
If you’re now thinking that you’ve never actually seen examples of any of the problems just outlined, I would say to you that in the 26 years that I’ve been driving I’ve never witnessed a fatal traffic accident either, but that doesn’t mean that they don’t happen.
So that’s all…I’m coming to the end of the presentation and have two final things for you to ponder. If someone tells you that the moderate consumption of alcohol is beneficial, think about where that information is coming from. The only correct message to which all us health workers must add our voice is that conveyed by the WHO, namely: “the lower the intake of alcohol, the better”(23). Above all because every year alcohol causes 3.3 million deaths across the world (24).
Finally, I would ask you to look at this cover from an WHO book about alcohol and health (8). Here we can see a famous painting by Renoir. What do you see in the image? I see too much alcohol.

But looking at this painting also makes me think of something else: that alcohol has been embedded into our society for a very long time indeed. Does that mean that there is nothing we can do? No – we can do something. Perhaps I’m a bit naïve, but I still retain some of that youthful enthusiasm with which I began my studies in human nutrition and dietetics. This leads me to a quotation from Dickens. It comes from Agnes, the kindest character in his novel, David Copperfield. This character, like myself, believes that one far off day “love and truth will end up overcoming all the injustice and misery of this world”.

De modo que en cuestiones de imágenes terroríficas conviene de vez en cuando dejar de lado a los subalternos y volver al patrón: nada más espeluznante, si bien se mira, que aquel cuadro primitivo que muestra en un paisaje plácido a san Antonio a punto de ser tentado por una hermosa dama suntuosamente vestida a la que por debajo del vuelo de la falda denuncia una indiscreta garra de dragón. Alex de la Iglesia, predestinado por su apellido a este tipo de impíos esparcimientos, vuelve a traernos en El día de la bestia esa visita desasosegante y de vez en cuando imprescindible.
El día de la bestia tiene humor, aunque no chocarrería: es una comedia, no una parodia. Pertenece a la dignísima familia de las películas de género, actualizando su tema con permanentes guiños al espectador, pero sin desvirtuarlo ni hacerlo irreconocible a fuerza de jolgorio. Viene a decirnos que el mal camina por la ciudad a nuestro lado y a veces la pureza ingenua del paladín que pretende combatirlo se halla tan contaminada por el azufre criminal que provoca más horrores de los que promete extirpar: ejemplos recientes no faltan.
Abundan los aciertos memorables en la película, como la irresistible y casi tierna complicidad entre los dos protagonistas, el teólogo tan bondadoso que ya no tiene ni escrúpulos y el rockero que tropieza por fin con una marcha realmente heavy. Pero quizá lo mejor de todo sea la visión alucinatoria que se nos ofrece de la ciudad misma, subyugada por los fastos siniestros de la ominosa Navidad. Por primera vez, que yo sepa, Madrid se incorpora con fulgor y misterio a la fantasía gótica del cinematógrafo, junto a las nieblas destripadoras de Londres, al París fantasmal con fondo melódico de Gounod y a este Nueva York por cuyo perfil escarpado trepa un gorila gigante. En El día de la bestia, las bocas de metro de la Gran Vía alcanzan una profundidad de inquietud digna después de todo de la única capital europea que se adorna con una estatua dedicada al Maligno, ese tremendo monumento al ángel caído a cuyos pies – o mejor, a cuyas pezuñas – acaba la película.
Salgan ahora del cine y será de noche: paseen un rato por las calles de la ciudad, miren a su alrededor con disímulo, escóndanse en un portal si pasa un grupo de poco pelo y mucho palo buscando a quién devorar. Cuidado con pisar a algún yonki de los que alfombran las aceras húmedas. El Anticristo no ha muerto: sólo ha cambiado de vuelo y llegará un poco más tarde. Mientras tanto, cada día y cada noche sigue trayendo su propia bestia.

So in terms of terrifying images, sometimes it makes sense to forget about the subordinates and return to the boss. If looked at carefully there is nothing more frightening than that early painting which shows Saint Anton in the middle of peaceful surroundings on the point of being tempted by a lovely, sensually dressed damsel, whose swirl of the skirt reveals a hidden dragon’s claw. Alex de la Iglesia who is predestined by his surname (meaning “of the church” in Spanish”) to this type of ungodly amusement, again brings us in his film “El Dia de la Bestia” (the Day of the Beast) that type of visit which is both unnerving and at times essential.
El Dia de la Bestia is funny, but not vulgar. It’s a comedy but not a parody. It belongs to the highly distinguished family of films of its genre, films which bring their theme up to date with constant winks in the direction of the audience. But it doesn’t take anything away from that genre or make it unrecognisable due to an over reliance on revelry. Its purpose is to show us how evil forces walk side by side with us in the city. And that at times the naïve purity of the people’s champion who strives to combat that evil is just as contaminated by a type of criminal brimstone, something which creates more horror than that which our champion had promised to stamp out. There is no shortage of recent examples of this tendency.
There are a number of memorable examples of where the film really hits the mark. For instance there is the irresistible and almost affectionate complicity between the film’s two main characters; the theologian who is so saintly that he no longer has any scruples, and the Rocker who finally stumbles upon a really “heavy” scene. But perhaps the best of the bunch is the fascinating vision that it offers us of the city itself, underlined by the sinister pomp of the ominous Christmas celebration. For the first time that I’m aware of Madrid is getting involved with the splendour and mystery of some type of cinematographer’s Gothic fantasy. This groups Madrid in with London, with its murderous fog, the ghostlike Paris with a melodic background provided by Gounod and that image of New York with its steep backdrop through which there roams a gigantic gorilla. In "El Dia de La Bestia" the entrances to the Underground (El Metro) at the Gran Via station manage to foster a depth of disquiet which is, after all, quite appropriate for the only European capital which is decorated with a statue dedicated to the Evil One. It is at the feet - or to put it better, at the hooves - of this tremendous statue to the fallen angel, that the film finishes.
Leave the cinema now and it will be night time. Walk for a while around the streets of the city and look around you without drawing attention to yourselves. Hide yourselves in a doorway if a group of shaven-headed yobs brandishing clubs appears, looking for someone to devour. Take care that you don’t step on some junkie the likes of whom form a carpet over the wet pavements. The Antichrist has not died. Rather he has just changed his flight and will arrive a little bit later. In the meantime, every day and every night brings with them their own beast.

Source text - Spanish El comercio electrónico está llamado a ocupar un lugar privilegiado en la economía mundial. De acuerdo con los datos publicados por la Asociación Española de Comercio Electrónico en 1999, las transacciones electrónicas en España han ascendido a 8.500 millones de pesetas. Ante este fenómeno, no existe todavía un régimen fiscal específico aplicable al tráfico comercial a través de la red. ¿Qué adaptaciones deben llevarse a cabo, principalmente en relación con las denominadas transacciones en red, es decir aquellas que se completan íntegramente en la red, sin entrega física de bienes?
La comunidad económica internacional está inmersa en un intenso debate sobre cuáles deben ser las líneas directrices que permitan adaptar las legislaciones internas. El consenso en esta materia es importante. La OCDE acordó en la Conferencia de Ottawa celebrada en septiembre de 1998 los siguientes principios de la fiscalidad del comercio electrónico:
Neutralidad: No deben establecerse nuevos impuestos que graven el comercio electrónico ni diferencias entre la imposición sobre las distintas formas de comercio de modo que se generen ventajas o desventajas comparativas.
Eficiencia: Los costes administrativos derivados de las obligaciones impuestas deben ser los mínimos para no entorpecer el desarrollo del comercio electrónico.
De acuerdo con el principio de neutralidad, la realización de una operación en red no debería generar rentas distintas que si se hiciera la operación desde fuera de ésta. Debe evitarse que por el mero hecho de que una transacción sea en red la renta generada esté sometida a tributación en origen.
El comercio electrónico facilita la deslocalización de las empresas. Por otra parte, el medio informático no tiene por qué estar en el mismo país que el domicilio fiscal del proveedor. Las posibilidades abiertas a la planificación fiscal internacional para los nuevos negocios que operan en la red son importantes. No obstante, también es la puerta al abuso y al fraude fiscal. Uno de los problemas mayores que plantea Internet es la dificultad que puede existir para conocer la residencia fiscal de las partes en una transacción. En ocasiones, la única referencia que se tiene de un cliente es la cuenta origen del pago. La aplicación de retenciones puede en estos casos generar un problema significativo al desconocer cuál es el convenio que resulta de aplicación. Por otra parte, el pago con tarjeta exige que se abone el importe íntegro.
Las tradicionales cadenas de valor son reemplazadas por las denominadas “redes de valor añadido”. Los criterios tradicionales para determinar el posible precio de mercado no son de fácil aplicación en la red. El método de distribución funcional del beneficio puede parecer a priori el más apto, aunque empieza ya a considerarse un nuevo sistema denominado Proceso Analítico On-Line como método para analizar y documentar la política de precios de transferencia de una empresa.
Translation - English Electronic commerce is destined to occupy a privileged position in the world economy. According to the data published by the Asociación Española de Comercio Electrónico (Spanish Organisation of Electronic Commerce) in 1999, electronic transactions in Spain have increased to 8.5 billion pesetas. Given this phenomenon there is still no specific fiscal regime in existence that is applicable to the commercial traffic over the Internet. This raises the question of which adaptations need to be carried out, principally in relation to so-called Internet transactions; that is to say those which are completed entirely on-line, without any physical delivery of goods.
The international economic community is immersed in an intense debate about the regulatory framework that is required to adapt the internal legislation of individual states. Consensus on this issue is important. At the Ottowa Conference in September 1998 The OECD agreed the following principles on the fiscal regulation of electronic commerce:
Neutrality: No new taxes ought to be established which negatively affect electronic commerce. Neither should there be any difference in the fiscal treatment of the different forms of commence whereby such differences would lead to comparative advantages or disadvantages.
Efficiency: The administrative costs deriving from any requirements imposed upon electronic commerce must be minimal in order not to hinder the development of this sector.
In keeping with the principle of neutrality, the setting up of an on-line operation should not generate returns which are different to those that would have arisen without the on-line element of the operation. The situation should be avoided whereby the simple fact that a transaction takes place on-line means that the income that is generated becomes subjected to taxation at source.
Electronic commence facilitates the process whereby companies move away from specific locations. On the other hand the computer apparatus does not have to be in the same country as the fiscal base of the supplier. For the new businesses that operate on-line the possibilities that are open to them in terms of international fiscal planning, are important. Also open, though, is the door that leads to abuse and fiscal fraud. One of the biggest problems that the Internet throws up is the difficulty that can exist in establishing the fiscal residences of the different parties in a transaction. On occasions, the only information that exists on a client is the origin of the account used for payment. In these cases the application of taxation measures can lead to a significant problem since the conventions involving such measures are not known. Another issue is that when paying by card it is the full amount for the transaction that must be processed.
The traditional value chains are being replaced by the so-called “added value networks”. The traditional criteria for determining possible market prices are not easily applied to the Internet. The functional distribution method for profit may at first sight appear to be the most suitable.
However, a new system called the On-line Analytical Process is beginning to be considered as a method for analysing and documenting the policy of transfer pricing for companies.

My experience with Spanish goes back to 1990 when I moved to Madrid to work as an English teacher. I stayed there for three years and later spent time in Mexico and Argentina, broadening my understanding of the Spanish-speaking world and the variations in its language. Although now based in Edinburgh I continue to have close contact with the language through Spanish radio which I listen to on a daily basis.
My writing skills in English have been developed through my employment as a social researcher at the Henley Centre and later through working as a business researcher at Edinburgh University. I am currently an Assoicate with the Institute for Japanese and European Technology Studies (JETS) at Edinburgh University.

I have also taught English for Academic Purposes at various universities giving me a good insight into correct English usage.
In 2009 I started working as a volunteer translator for www.streetfootballworld.org. More recently I have also been collaborating with The Prisma, a bilingual on-line newspaper (www.theprisma.co.uk). In this role the translations tend to be between 1,000 - 2,000 words and normally have to be delivered within 24 hours. So I am very used to meeting deadlines.
As a long time listener to the Spanish radio programme "Gente Despierta" I was happy to help out one of its regular contributors, Julio Basulto, at the start of 2018, by translating one of his Ted Talks relating to the health implications of drinking alcohol.
