Portuguese term

com pess. (OR com. pess.)

Portuguese to English Other Other abbreviations
This appears in a reference in an academic study - "(Augusto Figueira, com pess.)". The footnote reference from here (not that I think this helps at all) is to this website - http://www.capt-ed.com/best_fishing_times.htm

There are lots of hits for "com pess." and also "com. pess." on Google, always following an author's name. It looks like a Portuguese variant of "et al". I have also seen "com pers.". Can anyone please confirm?

comunicação pessoal

The correct notation is com. pess. and it means "comunicação pessoal" (or personal communication). It's not a portuguese equivalent of the latin expression "et alii".
It's used in an academic or scientific context, when you're directly citing an author rather than published facts or findings (that author has personally communicated said facts or findings to you).
Unlike with the usage of "et al.", "com. pess." isn't succeeded by a date (the year).
Example sentence:

Em 1998, estimava-se em 1.000.000 a quantidade total de animais errantes (entre cães e gatos) em Portugal, calculando-se que esse número possa ascender aos 10.000.000 em 2005 (Moutinho, com. pess.).
