Portuguese term

tolerância do ponto

Portuguese to English Bus/Financial Human Resources
In Portugal the government or private companies can offer 'tolerância do ponto' meaning you don't have to work that day. Often given on 24 december, 31 december, which are not public holidays, but they know everybody is going to do F-all that day anyway

Discussion

Marlene Curtis Dec 19, 2013:
Privilege days is the correct translation for the UK. I agree.
Nick Taylor Dec 19, 2013:
Well well! The real deal! Why don't you post the answer Lexical! You'll get my vote!

For what it's worth... ...i.e. not much in this context, these extra days like Easter Tuesday and Christmas Eve are known as privilege days in the UK Civil Service. They always seemed to me so much more enjoyable than the official Bank Holiday they were tacked onto.
Geoffrey Chan Dec 18, 2013:
Okay, thanks!
Douglas Bissell (asker) Dec 18, 2013:
Of course you'll get your points if no better answer comes in. I always leave it for a few days just in case.
Geoffrey Chan Dec 17, 2013:
Hi, Douglas. No points awarded? Would be appreciated!
Douglas Bissell (asker) Dec 17, 2013:
Oh come on Richard, most third world countries must have something like this. I have had to go with 'extra days off' as the job was on a short leash and that was the term I had in mind anyway, but I was actually surprised the term wasn't here. Merry Xmas everyone when it comes and thanks for the input, all good healthy stuff...
Richard Purdom Dec 17, 2013:
Ha ha, no translation of this nonsense because it isn't done anywhere else!

The Government of East Timor calls it simply a day off...

Douglas Bissell (asker) Dec 17, 2013:
Oliver, perhaps I didn't explain properly. These are not days the workers take off on their own volition, they are given by the company, like "don't come in tomorrow folks, it's Christmas Eve"

extra/additional days off

I believe this only applies to government employees for days off that are sandwiched between a weekend and a public (statutory) holiday.

Occasional days ; Duvet days

'Occasional days' if you want a formal translation, but if they're purely for indulgence, then ' duvet days' or some other term that implies the motive for taking them off isn't really valid!

grant of permission not to attend work

Náo achei nada convincente que incluisse "relógio do ponto" que, creio eu, náo incluiria todos os funcionários, isto é, os que batem e não batem ponto.
