Discussion

T o b i a s Aug 16, 2016:
Well obviously more context is needed, since these terms can vary from one city to the next.
Charles R. Castleberry Aug 15, 2016:
@ Ward Yes, without a doubt ! And you're definition is perfectly correct. Meanwhile, in the likelihood that Anne's post is seeking to coin a term, the birth of the concept under discussion began with - as coined by theBrazilBusiness.com (a reputable source) - shuttle vans, which have sinced evolved into the buses suggested by Sormane. But then again, maybe Anne only needs a definition or maybe there is a better term
Mario Freitas Aug 14, 2016:
@ Ward and Anne, I am in Minas Gerais. When someone says "lotação" here, they refer to the regular urban buses. The smaller ones are microônibis and vans, not lotação.
We would need to check the context to see what they are talking about.
Ward Whittaker Aug 14, 2016:
Charles I don't think we are talking about legal or illegal shuttle buses. I believe we are talking about these: https://www.google.com.br/search?q=lotacao porto alegre&clie...
Ward Whittaker Aug 14, 2016:
Mario I don't know where you are in Brazil but here in POA, the lotaçãos are small air conditioned luxurious 14-16 seat privately owned buses that charge more than the standard big urban/city council buses. They began as an alternative to these shitty, poorly maintained local council buses that are, as you know, so basic as to be hemorrhoid inducing. If indeed Anne is trying to make this distinction, finding a term will be difficult.

Definition of jitney
plural jitneys
1 slang : nickel 2a(1)
2 [from the original 5 cent fare] : bus 1a; especially : a small bus that carries passengers over a regular route on a flexible schedule

Jitneys weren't worth a dime - just a nickel. In the early 1900s, jitney was slang for "nickel," but it wasn't long before the term was applied to a new mode of public transportation that only cost a nickel. When they were introduced in American cities at the beginning of the century, vehicular jitneys could be any automobiles that carried passengers over a set route for a cheap fare, but eventually the term was applied specifically to small buses.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer.

Small well appointed low capacity privately owned buses operating on public routes as an alternative

If you are talking about the ones like we have here in POA Anne, the small red ones. there is no equivalent in English and "private buses" won't work because the many of the public bus companies here have been privatized. I thing the best thing to do is use the Brazilian term and supply a description like the one I've offered.

private buses

They're called "private buses" but it all depends on the context you're working in

Private buses rely on the number of passengers the conductors can squeeze in ... passengers can request the driver to halt the bus at a certain place en route.

Another option would be "fee/fare-paying shuttle buses."

Like I said, it all depends on your context.
