Norwegian term

på syt og mas

Norwegian to English Art/Literary Poetry & Literature expressions
"Det var ikke måte på syt og mas blant folk i dalen."

I don't understand this sentence at all. The doctor is supposed to visit all his patients, regardless of where they leave, because they live on two sides of the river. And the next sentence is: "Det var ikke måte på syt og mas blant folk i dalen."
What does it mean?

to the whining/complaining

There was no end to the whining and complaining of the people in the valley.
"Syt og mas" is an expression that as a whole means whining/complaining, but "mas" on its own normally means "trouble, bother, difficulty, fuss, hassle" or "nagging, fussing, importunity" (word selections taken from Ordnett)
