German term

Wertigkeitsdenken

German to English Art/Literary Esoteric practices
Dear Colleagues,

this term (also Wertigkeitssystem) appears in several sentences of the guide to esoteric practices that I am presently translating.

Es führt kein Weg daran vorbei, euch auch die Schattenbereiche des Menschseins anzuschauen und diese zu erlösen. Jedoch ist hier größte energetische Sorgfalt gefordert, denn dieses ,,muss" frei von jeglichem Urteil und ***Wertigkeitsdenken*** geschehen.

U. S. English please.

Thank you for your great support.

Sorry Just rushing out.
Thayenga (asker) Sep 22, 2014:
@ Helen And I do appreciate your help very much. You might want to enter your translation as an answer. :)
Helen Shiner Sep 22, 2014:
@Thayenga Ok, I was only trying to help. I have just offered you how I would translate it, particularly in an esoteric context. I would also translate it like this in a coaching context, too. And would translate Wertigkeitssystem as value systems.
Thayenga (asker) Sep 22, 2014:
@ Helen Thank you. I know what it means :), I am just looking for the right translation. I had contemplated judgemental thinking, but this sounds a little awkward. :)
Helen Shiner Sep 22, 2014:
@Thayenga It means thinking in terms of value judgements, though I appreciate that makes it difficult within the sentence including Urteil as well.

You could use 'prejudice' for Urteil perhaps to get around the problem.

Thank you so much, Helen. ;)
Thank you, Helen. :)

agree polyglot45 : or preconceived ideas (for Urteil)

Thanks, polyglot45 - good suggestion
agree philgoddard : You could leave out "thinking in terms of"- it doesn't add anything to the sentence.

Thanks, Phil, yes, if hired to translate the sentence as a whole, I would reword :)

bias

You could also write "value bias" to make the sentence sound more complex than the thought it contains.
I think the writer just wanted to avoid writing "Vorurteil" because he was afraid it would sound just like "Urteil."
Example sentence:

"You have to look at people without prejudice."

Thank you, Emal. :)

personal bias

This is how it is typically worded in a psychotherapeutic context in the US.

The word 'bias' is rarely used in this context in the US. Personal bias is the expression that is used. Perhaps it's use is different in the UK, but in the US, this is what would be written ( not that it is any better than your suggestion, just a regional difference, I suspect. Not nearly as bad as when I went to three stores in the UK and asked them for a cane because I had fallen and injured my hip. I got some pretty scary books on that. Then it dawned on me that they must be using a different word and images of Ghandi came to my mind. I finally got a catalog and found a picture of a cane which was referred to as a walking stick. I was soooo mortified. Don
Example sentence:

When therapy addresses value-laden issues, the therapist should strive to refrain from inserting personal bias unless failure to do so would result in harm to the client or others.

Again, thank you, Donald. :)

Thank you, writeaway!
neutral Helen Shiner : Why not just agree with the answer that already suggests 'bias' as an answer?
