Difference between canape and h-d I understand to be while the h-d is more often a savoury biscuit with topping, the canape is a half-slice of bread with topping.

neutral Erik Freitag : I believe that this is more general amd covers all three of the above, meaning something like "Vorspeise"./I don't doubt the definition you gave. In fact, it's basically identical to mine, but doesn't lead to "Mundbissen" imho.

Do not fall into the trap laid in menus; my definition comes from a respected English dictionary, AND it is used; for receptions, etc. //I really don't follow you - there are THREE expressions here, and "h-d" is not generally taken to cover them all.

Light buffet

Another suggestion taking account of the surrounding context.

Don't leave it untranslated and if the material is for trainee chefs rather than customers there's no need to try and sex it up into posh restaurant speak.

One more option. This would include finger food as well as the little, nicely designed bites on "toothpicks" that are served during cocktail parties.

disagree dercarson : Appetizers are little dishes you generally sit to eat: smoked trout, soup, guacamole. Hors d'oeuvres are served from platters to martini-chugging schmoozers. Their format follows the context - little sandwiches, crackers with topping, etc.

a well-established term, believe it or not, and while its exact definition is a little unclear (does it include sandwiches or not?), its usage seems fairly close to that of 'Mundbissen' in German, plus retains the 'bite', if that's important
