In this context the techniques of system sensing, condition monitoring, fault diagnosis, quality surveillance, knowledge-based systems, neural nets, adaptive and autonomous control all need to be considered along with process and tool monitoring when formulating the design of an intelligent machining system. In particular the design of the system controller is crucial, for in addition to manipulating the speed, position, velocity and acceleration of the machine spindle and slides it must now interpret and command the operation of several ancillary systems on the machine, including by definition an integrated sensing system of some complexity.
