Discussion

Jonathan Spencer (asker) May 26, 2023:
Used in the ground Thanks for all the suggestions. Just to add a bit more context, this is actually used in the ground and not on walls. UK English is preferred by the client.
Johannes Gleim May 25, 2023:
@ Jonathan As there are different terminologies in USA and UK for "Dübel", we should know which language variant was stipulated for the patent translation. Since such patents are often written in US English, my educated guess is the US language.

Please let us know if this is correct.
Darin Fitzpatrick May 25, 2023:
In case anyone is wondering If the "Dübel" is set in the ground, it's still an anchor. Everyone is talking about walls, but in industrial settings they are often used in the ground.

A wall plug (UK English),[notes 1] also known as an anchor (US) or "Rawlplug" (UK), is a fibre or plastic (originally wood) insert used to enable the attachment of a screw in material that is porous or brittle or that would otherwise not support the weight of the object attached with the screw.

How to Use Drywall Anchors
:
A drywall sleeve anchor is a plastic sleeve or insert that fits into a small, previously drilled hole in the drywall. When the provided drywall metal screw is turned into the sleeve, the sleeve expands.
:
A drywall corkscrew anchor is a large plastic or metal threaded screw-shaped insert designed to be self-drilled (no pilot hole) into the drywall. A provided metal screw is then tapped into the anchor, and it's this second screw that holds the item to the wall.
:
With a drywall wing-style anchor, the object is held firmly in place by wings that press against the back of the drywall while a flange on the front presses in the opposite direction.

wall plug and screw

It's been a while since I affixed something to a wall in the UK but I remember calling them wall plugs.
Peer comment(s):

neutral Arne Marko : For UK English, I agree with wall plug and screw. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wall_plug

Screw anchor and screw

Screw anchors are inserts, typically made from plastic, metal, or fiber, which enable the attachment of screws into brittle materials — such as masonry or dry wall.
Peer comment(s):

neutral philgoddard : Yes, anchor (not screw anchor) and screw for US.

Thank you Phil. However, I found the term 'screw anchor' in several dictionaries. Not sure if it's better to specify what the anchor relates to? https://www.wordsense.eu/screw_anchor/

In North America, the anchor is also called a Fischer plug, because Fischer is one of the major producers.
