Anastasia Kalantzi Apr 17, 2022:

@Tony Since you used to teach the subject at University level, I have to go along with that. Greetings.
Daryo Apr 17, 2022:
"l'iris" of a video camera has the same function as "l'iris" of a human eye.

https://endhow.ru/lectronique/optique/accessoires-optique/19...

If it's THAT kind of "l'iris" the ST is about, I have an idea about what the whole of

"c'est une graduation sur l'iris, c'est une gravure. Je saute de gravure en gravure."

could mean. But a guess based on assumptions is not much help. Occam's razor is a good method, but not always.

More context?

@ Asker More context needed!

mark

These will be the aperture marks with which the lens barrel is 'graduated'
Note that, although it may (or may not) literally take the form of an 'iris', in photography we would normally refer to it as the 'aperture' setting.
In fact, we probably wouldn't even express it this way in EN — I'd be more likely to say "go from stop to stop" — the aperture setting is usually referred to as a 'stop' or 'f-stop', like f5.6 etc., and that's the more usual way we'd probably refer to the fact of rotating the aperture ring — each of the 'gravures' being the 'engraved' mark indicating the positions of the various 'stops'.

I'd just like to point out 2things:
1) The context here is a video camera
2) I used to teach this subject at University level.

Merci, Samuël !
agree Daryo : that's what I had in mind // yes, a pro would say "I go from stop to stop" or "I keep closing/opening the iris".

Thanks, Daryo!
agree Yvonne Gallagher : absolutely. F-stop mark

image

engraving: gravure, estampe, ciselure, cliché
Example sentence:

La gravure sur le trophée indiquait le nom du gagnant.

The engraving on the trophy showed the winner\'s name.

Peer comment(s):

disagree Daryo : (1) pointless without more context + (2) "image" is somewhere at the rock bottom of the list of translations likely to make sense.// also "linguee" is mostly useless: very few gems buried under mountains of rubbish.

disagree Tony M : Now we have more context, it is clear this wouldn't make sense in the context given.

ingraving / etching

p.e. Après la sculpture et la photographie, mon grand-père s'est essayé à la gravure / Engraving is an art.
https://www.metmuseum.org/about-the-met/collection-areas/dra...
Engraving is an intaglio printmaking process in which lines are cut into a metal plate in order to hold the ink. In engraving, the plate can be made of copper or zinc.

The metal plate is first polished to remove all scratches and imperfections from the surface so that only the intentional lines will be printed. When making an engraving, the printmaker incises or cuts a composition directly into the surface of a metal plate using a sharp tool, known as a burin: a steel shaft ending in a beveled diamond-shaped tip that is set into a rounded wooden handle.

https://www.britannica.com/art/engraving
engraving, technique of making prints from metal plates into which a design has been incised with a cutting tool called a burin. Modern examples are almost invariably made from copperplates, and, hence, the process is also called copperplate engraving. Another term for the process, line engraving, derives from the fact that this technique reproduces only linear marks. Tone and shading, however, can be suggested by making parallel lines or crosshatching.

Peer comment(s):

disagree Tony M : Now we have a little more context, it is clear that we are not talking about any sort of 'art' print, but simply the markings on the lens, which are often 'engraved' to make them more durable.

yeah, but still, after these last laser cameras, my suggestion about ''gravure'' is ''engraving or etching''.

indent, indentation

I think higher-quality devices will have indents machined/moulded into the controls (possibly filled with paint of a contrasting colour), others might just have marks painted on.

"A small INDENTATION on the aperture ring is the f-stop indicator; it should be at approximately the f4.5 mark."

"Lens mfrs typically choose to PRINT OR INDENT commonly used aperture markings"
Peer comment(s):

neutral Tony M : Indeed, they are usually 'engraved' marks for durability — but I think it is unwise to translate as 'indent', as that would tend to suggest an actual 'detent' or 'notch', which modern lenses tend not to have (i.e. continuously adjustable).
27 mins
disagree Daryo : it's still simply a "mark", even if deeply engraved // OTOH you would risk confusion with real "indentations" inside the ring (***called like that***) used to stop the ring at predetermined positions.
11 hrs
neutral Yvonne Gallagher : There may well be indents for the f-stop marks but not necessarily. Anyway, I think grooves or notches would be better.
