Spanish term

pantones

Spanish to English Art/Literary Photography/Imaging (& Graphic Arts)
This is from a text by an Argentine curator about the problem of contemporary photography. While it might refer to pantone, the company that makes paint colors, the context makes me think that the reference is something more technological:

Thanks

Discussion

Jennifer Levey Mar 19, 2018:
Having worked for many years in both broadcasting and publishing, I am sure that it refers to colours in the Pantone chart. These are used, especially in the advertising world, to define very precisely a particular company's "house colours" (the Coca Cola Co.'s red, for example, which is different to the red used by Kodak). The ST appears to be suggesting that these colours, which are very tightly controlled in terms of hue and saturation (or any other standard colour space such as LUV), and that can be reproduced with great precision in digital imaging systems (16+ million colours and all that...) lose something of the naturalness and subtleness of "real life" colours.

I see something of an analogy with the classic (in the media world) argument on the relative merits of film and television imaging systems.

I think you should add colour chart, to make it clearer.

agree Robert Carter : I think you're right, but to me it seems to refers to Pantone colours, rather than the colour chart.
