German to English Art/Literary History methods of medieval torture

Again from the early 19th century text about the reception of homosexuality. The passage concerns the consequences of Christian morality, or rather the punishments meted out to those outside the moral pale - I can only presume he is talking about the medieval period, though he does not explicitly say so. (A comparison is made with the way the ancient Greeks viewed homosexuality.) It is part of an enormously long sentence, so here is just a taste:

"... und so paradirt uns denn auch, hoch über den Griechen, das hehre Meisterstück unserer Sittenerhabenheit, unsers moralischen Höhepunkts, unserer Philosophie - wirklich hoch - an allen Galgen und Rädern, an Schandpfählen und Schmachfesseln - am Ruder, am Pranger, am Karren - verloren - vielleicht ewig - und zupft fluchend, verfaulend, nach Seele und Leib am Thränenstroh seines Schmachlagers - unerlösbar, verzweifelnd an Gott und sich selbst!"
