English to Chinese: Effective Listening General field: Bus/Financial Detailed field: Business/Commerce (general)
Source text - English Have you ever had someone interrupt you before you finished your sentence? Or talk too much? Or respond too quickly? Of course you have; we all have.
Sometimes this feels like a slap in the face. Other times it feels as if your contribution to the conversation is completely irrelevant. Many times you may get the impression that the other person is not interested in what you have to say, so you go quiet. Then you will try to find someone else with whom to talk, so you can have a real conversation and not listen to a monologue.
Don’t make that mistake. If you want to build relationships with partners, customers or prospective clients, you need to listen to what they are saying and try your best to understand who they are. Listen for meaning. Listen to learn. Some of what they say may be irrelevant, incorrect or even misguided, but some may give you the key to what their needs and drivers are: what motivates and inspires them. To influence others, you need to make personal connections with people – connections that are strong enough they overcome the natural resistance to change, to try something new, to leave their comfort zones or to do business with you.
