The UK has similar statistics Oct 6, 2014

Does anyone know what study or report this information is based on?

Oh, I think it's this one, from 2007:

The statistics for the UK are similar (I don't have a link), this wouldn't include all the translators who work for very little. Also, looking at the Proz.com job board gives me as a newcomer the impression that the rates recommended for my language pair are rather inflated?

It depends Oct 6, 2014

I live and work in Spain and although the rate cited is half of my current standard hourly fee, I can imagine that if I was just starting out and desperate for work - and didn't mind translating in-house - then I might consider it. And 18 euros is twice the hourly rate my friend was earning recently doing hard manual labour in a scrapyard...

... the minimum wage for the big yellow M is equivalent to 6 € per hour before taxes and that is not including health insurance...

Where I live, 18€ is the hourly wage at the big yellow M... and that is a wage, so as a freelancer you would earn much less than that.

Sounds good to me! Oct 6, 2014

Well compared to the rates I've had so far, it's pretty good.

18 € per hour = a good price??? Oct 6, 2014

@ Elizabeth: You're actually working for less then 18 € per hour as a freelancer? Did I get that right?

Yes, I'm still trying to get established - I've earned hardly any money this year, in fact. Most of the work I do these days is pro bono.

Same here! Oct 7, 2014

I have just started to look for work at decent rates, over the last year I have been on websites, where as it seems very qualified people sell translations for peanuts. I might have gone the wrong way about gaining experience, but I have been busy and earned next to nothing.

Also, I regularly see job adverts for translators at GBP7 to 10 per hour, some of them are in London! I can only hope that they don't expect much at that rate.
