scary low rate Jan 20, 2011

I've seen some awfully low rates asked by people offering their services on some local classifieds websites. I've heard of students and people with regular jobs with still too much time on their hands working for peanuts. But 2 euro / page? That's 8 PLN. That's at least 3 x times less than a low low net rate paid by smaller agencies for easy jobs.

Aren't the folks responsible for the safety of critical medical equipment just a little apprehensive of what might happen if there's a f... up due to mistranslation in a manual / document?

I envy you in a way. But I am curious: If you have to buy software or computers, or a new car, does it cost less, too?

Best,

Nicole

Yes, I also have to buy ... just don't need a car and don't buy all (software titles). I only have still since a MemoQ + XP licence. Hardware, as I am not really a hardware geek, I am happy with pre-owned, old fashion, solid hardware.
I work from home office, in fact, a corner in my living room (I not need to go regular to work neither). Some now 15 years ago, I did retire, but still own and run a few companies, so I have a lot of spare time and additional income, I not even keep, just doing it to keep myself a different busy. Professional, I work maybe 3-4 hours a month only
If you look my profile, you see, I really do only as freelance, not professional, neither I have / use loads of extra software to appear professional.

Once or twice a month a small job is more than plenty and half year or longer no translation, doesn't kill me neither.

The general costs of living are compared to Europe even years later, less than 30% and a lot of utilities are state subsidized.

Some small examples: Monthly power ~ 7USD, rent 120USD (a whole house), water =0, internet per year ~12 USD. No car or any luxury lifestyle like branded clothing or gear, but I have keep 2 decent dogs and maybe once a week fishing.

A rough estimate per month: 250-300USD pcm keep me well going, freelance translation income usually goes to a charity or private sponsorship of the needy.

As for tonight, I am going to have a drink and a small dinner, I careful estimate about 5USD. That even includes even a decent tip for the service. The result, I will be drunk enough for at least 24 hours after leaving.

I still work at basically the same rates in large volume projects

Hi,

Today, for the first time in my life, I faced such a situation:

I have a client, for whom I translate highly specialized medical texts in the scope of optics and ophthalmology. And the work itself, during the last 7 years is very regular. We have a mutually agreed rate and so on.

Since few months, I didn't get any orders from them, so I went there, just to ask if everything is OK.

And what I hear, is that they received an offer from a very experienced translator, who will do this translations for EUR 2 per page!!!!!!!!!! (1600 characters). As you can easily find on Proz, the rates for English-Polish translations are much higher....

I am really trying very hard to stay calm - but does any of you have a clue, how to deal with such a situation?

Thanks in advance foe any clues!

Dominika

People who are actually willing to work for these rates will be the death of us all. The translation market will be ruined. But it seems that that is what most agencies want. Nobody seems to realise that this race to the bottom benefits nobody in the end.
