Looks like we could all use a refresher on the rules Oct 9, 2006

Why are there so many colleagues, especially in ZH-EN and EN-ZH who write "FYI"? Because nobody explains that they shouldn't. I really believe many colleagues are simply not aware of the rules. I don't even want to look at the Chinese KOG, because I am sure you will mostly find "FYI" entries instead of useful terms.

I did make a comment yesterday to one of the habitual FYIers that it was annoying, so hopefully they will start getting the message.

If I understand you correctly, you wrote a personal comment to an answerer about how they chose to answer ("FYI answers")? I can understand your frustration, but I believe this is

A) itself a violation of rule 3.7 of kudoz participation: http://www.proz.com/siterules/kudoz_answ/3.7#3.7
"Commentary on askers or answerers, and their postings or decisions to post, is not allowed. Comments or insinuations concerning an answerer's or asker's experience or profile, his/her decision to post a certain question or answer, grade or close a question in a certain way, make a certain glossary entry, etc., are strictly prohibited (whether posted publicly, made directly to the person in question, or made to another site user)."

B) completely ineffective. I'm not a freak about rules, but I think there are better ways to approach this. Have you tried contacting a moderator? I understand there is apparently none assigned to your language pair, but my guess is any would be able to help you. Kevin Yang maybe?

Moderators and site staff can do things like:
" causing a message related to the rules to appear to certain users when they undertake certain actions"

I assume this means they could flag such "FYI answerers" to receive a special message informing them of the rules, i.e. a reminder not to write "FYI" or "see below." I just don't think anyone is going to get the message through a personal comment from you (or me, or any other user).

I'm not sure if this was the the right way to go about helping someone. It comes across as a bit of "tit for tat". I think you should have been the bigger man and just thanked him for his contribution. I don't think it was really ncessary to highlight the mistakes in his profile for everyone to see. It is a very kind gesture you are offering but I think it would have been kinder if you had offered it in a private email to him.

My intention was not to "get back" at William, and I sincerely hope he didn't take it that way. I have sent personal messages to people over ProZ in the past, and not gotten a single response. I figured the forum was the best means of communication, because people check it often and respond very quickly. I apologize if I offended him or anyone else.
