Among the Métis people of Canada, some of the most famous are the actor Tomas Jackson [98], the Northwest Territories Commissioner Tony Whitford, and two-time resistance movement leader Louis Lille. Lille was arrested in both the first Red River Uprising in 1869-1870 and the 1885 Northwest Uprising, after which he was tried and finally executed. [99][100][101]
The language of the Métis, called Métis French, is a composite of French and a language called Michif (also spelled Mechif or Metchif.) [102] Today, the Métis mainly speak English and French and a number of indigenous languages. In the 19th century, the Métis of English descent were also called “Countryborn.” They were the children of fur traders in Rupert’s Land, often born of fathers from the Orkney Islands of Scotland, mainland Scotland, or England, and indigenous mothers. Their native languages were generally indigenous languages such as Cree, Saulteux, and Assiniboine; as well as English. Some of their fathers could speak Gaelic, which mixed with English developed into a “Red River” dialect of English. [104]
The 35th article of 1982’s proposed constitution mentions that there has been debate for a long time over the legal definition of “Métis.” [105] According to a September 23, 2003 Canadian Supreme Court ruling, the Métis is a unique nation entitled to specific rights (Polly decision.) [106]
