Değiş-tokuş korelâsyon olarak GGA kullanıldı. Alaşımlar için elastik sabitleri, Bulk modülü, yasak band aralığı, fermi enerjisi ve Kromers-Kronig bağıntıları kullanılarak dielektrik sabitleri, kırılma indisi, soğurma katsayısı, enerji kayıp fonksiyonu ve iletkenliği hesaplanarak bulundu. Ayrıca; X–ray cihazındaki veriler alınarak Vegards yasası kullanılarak; band gap, elastik sabitleri, elastik sabitlerinden faydalanılarak, Bulk modülü, Poission oranı, lame sabiti, kleiman parametresi hesaplandı. Üçlü alaşımların bu özellikleri, ikili bileşiklerin özellikleri kullanılarak bulundu. Her iki yöntemle bulunan sonuçların birbiri ile diğer teorik ve deneysel çalışmalarla uyumlu olduğu görüldü. Sürekli geliştirilen Grup III-Nitrur teknolojisi, ışık yayan diyotların (LED'ler), lazer diyotların (LDS) [1] ve modülasyon katkılı transistorların (MODFET) gelişmesine katkı sağlamaktadır[8,9]. AlN, yüksek erime noktası, yüksek termal iletkenlik ve büyük bulk modülünden dolayı, aşırı koşullar altında çalışan, optoelektronik cihazlar için umut verici malzemelerden biridir. Diğer taraftan, GaN, direk bant geçişi ve mekanik olarak kararlı yarı iletken bir materyal olup, sertliği ve büyük ısı kapasitesine sahiptir. AlxGa1−xN Alaşımları, optoelektronik cihazlar ve yüksek frekanslı araçlar için birçok olasılık sunabilir ve geniş bir dalga boyu aralığı içerebilirler. Özellikle; AlxGa1−xN Alaşımları çoğu nitrit esaslı cihazın etkin bölgesinde Nitrür elektronik ve optoelektronik cihazlar için engelleyici malzemeolarak kullanılırlar. Bizim bu makaledeki amacımız Ga1-x AlxN alaşımları için, x katkılama miktarını değiştirerek en uygun optikal, elektronik özellikleri, ikinci sıra elastik sabitleri, dinamiksel özellikleri ve termodinamik özellikleri, Yoğunluk fonksiyonel teori (YFT)’ yi temel alan Castep paket programı ile elde etmektir. Makalenin 2. Bölümünde, hesaplamada kullanılan metoda değinildi,3. Bölümde hesaplamalar yapıldı ve diğer deneysel ve teorik sonuçlarla karşılaştırıldı, 4. Bölümde makalede elde edilen sonuçlara değinildi. 2.Hesaplamalar Hesaplamalardüzlem dalga yöntemi kullanılarak, yoğunluk fonksiyonel teorisine dayalı (Cambridge Sequential Total Energy Package) CASTEP kodu [11] ileyapıldı.Ga, Al ve N için norm – conserving psedopotansiyelleri perdew, burke, Emzerhof tarafından parametrize edilen GGA yaklaşımı ve Troullier simülasyonu kullanılarak elde edildi[12]. Galyum, Azot ve Alüminyum atomu için değerlik elektron konfigürasyonu sırasıyla3d10 4s2 4p1, 2s2 2p3ve 3s23p1dir.Elektron-iyon etkileşimini tarif etmek için norm – conserving pseudopotansiyel kullanıldı. Değerlik elektronlarının düzlem dalga fonksiyonları, bir düzlem dalga baz sabiti ile açıklandı ve norm – conserving pseudopotansiyel, bir düzlem dalga enerji Ecutile hesaplanıyor. Brillouin bölgesi üzerinde karşılıklı-uzay uyumu, k sonlu sayıdaki dikkatli bir örneklem yoluyla kullanılan bir Monkhorst-Pack mesh benzetildi[13]. Dalga fonksiyonları, bir kinetic-energy cutt-off of 600 eV değerine kadar düzlem dalgalar halinde genişletildi. X bileşenleri için 6 x 6 x 5 ve cutt of değeri 600 eV dur. Yük yoğunlukları 1 x 10-6 e V / atom the self-consistent nin hesaplarına yaklaştırıldı. Optimisazyon sürecinde, enerji değişimi, maksimum kuvvet, maksimum gerilme, yer değiştirme toleranslar sırasıyla 2X l0-5 eV/atom, 0.05 eV/A, 0,1 GPa ve 0.002 A olarak alınmıştır. GaN ve AlN binary bileşiklerin yapısal özellikleri yüzey merkezli kübik yapıda (F-43M) hesaplandı. A1-x BxC tipi ternary alaşımlarının yapısal özelikleri Castep ile x=0.25, 0.50, 0.75, bileşenleri için denge durumlarında, farklı cutt off değerleri için optimize edilerek Castep ile hesaplandı. 3. SONUÇLAR 3.1. Elektronik ve yapısal özellikleri GaN bileşiğinin, Yüzey merkezli kübik yapısının (F-43M) Birim hücresinde sekiz tane atom (4taneGa ve 4 tane N) vardır. Ga yerine Al ilave ettiğimiz zaman Ga1-xAlxN alaşımında x’ in artışına bağlı olarak Ga0.75Al0.25N ve Ga0.25Al0.75Nmuhtemel kristal yapıları için Basit kübik yapı (P-43M), Ga0.5Al0.5N için basit tetroganal(P4M2) yapıdır. Ga1-xAlxN alaşımında her x değeri için, örgü sabitleri, hücre hacmi ve band gap hesaplandı. sonuçlar Deneysel ve teorik değerlerle birlikte Tablo2’ de kaşılaştırıldı[22-23]. B1-xAlxNalaşımları için örgü parametreleri sırasıyla x = 0.25 için 4.49 A0, x= 0.5 için 3.14A0-3.14A0 ve 4.43A0, x= 0.75 için ise 4.36A0 olarak bulunmuştur. Şekil- 2 de gösterildi. Bant yapıları ve durum yoğunluklarının uyumlu olduğu görüldü. Bant grafiğinde, enerji değerlerinin yoğun bir şekilde süreklilik gösterdiği bantlarda durum yoğunluğunun (DOS) eğrilerinin keskin pikler meydana getirdiği görülmektedir. Tüm alaşımlar direkt bant geçişine sahip, yarı iletken özellik göstermektedirler. Hesaplanan sonuçlar, diğer teorik ve deneysel verilerle [16-17] birlikte Tablo -2’de listelenmiştir. Bant band gaplerin daha önceki çalışmalar ile uyum içinde olduğu görülmektedir. Şekil 3.Fermi seviyesinin 0 eV’da x’ e bağlı olarakGa1-xAlxN band yapısı ve DOS hesaplanmıştır. 3.2. ELASTİK ÖZELLİKLERİ Elastik sabitler katıların mekanik ve dinamik özellikleri arasında bir bağlantı kurar, özellikle alaşımların, sertlik ve kararlılığı hakkında önemli bilgi verir. İkinci dereceden elastik sabitleri (Cij) 'Volume -conserving' tekniği [18, 19] ile hesaplandı. Kararlı Tetragonal kristal yapı için, altı tane bağımsız elastik sabiti Cij (C11, C12, C13, C33, C44 ve C66 ) olmalı ve kararlılık için Born-Huang kriterlerini sağlamalıdırlar[20]. C11>0, C33>0, C44>0, C66>0, (C11− C12) >0, (C11+ C33− 2C13) >0, [2(C11+ C12) + C33+ 4C13] >0, Kararlı kübik kristaller için, üç bağımsız elastik sabiti Cij(C11, C12 ve C44) olmalı ve kararlılık [21] için (C11−C12)>0, C11>0, C44>0 ve 2(C11+C12)>0 Born-Huang kriterlerini sağlamalıdırlar[22]. Ga0.75Al0.25N ve Ga0.25Al0.75N Primitive cubic (P-43M) alaşımlar için 3 tane elastik sabiti, Primitive Tetrogonal (P-4M2) yapı için 6 tane elastik sabiti elde edildi. Tüm alaşımlar için Elastik sabitleri kararlılık koşullarını sağlamaktadırlar. Tablo-4 de gösterilmiştir. Tablo4. Hesaplanan sonuçları tablo-5 de listelendi. Young modulü, Shear (kayma) modülü (G), Sıkıştırılabilirliği, B/G oranı ve Poisson oranı (v) malzemenin sertlik ve dayanıklılığı için önemli parametrelerdir[24]. B/G>1.75 ise alaşımlar esnek, B/G 0 pozitif, kovalent bileşikler için çoğunlukla C12-C441/3 için esnek olarak, vθDise alaşımlarda tüm modların enerjisi kBT eşittir ve Eğer TGa0.5Al0.5N>Ga0.25Al0.75N şeklinde sıralanmaktadır. v. Ga1-xAlxN alaşımları için Kleinman parametresi(ξ) sırasıyla; Ga0.75Al0.25N için 0.64 ve Ga0.25Al0.75N için 0.61 değerine sahiptir. Ga0.50Al0.50N alaşımı tetragonal yapıda olduğu için Kleinman parametresi(ξ) hesaplanamadı. vi. Ga0.75Al0.25N alaşımı klasik asimptotik Dulong-Petit sınırına 45,8 cal/cell.K’ de, Ga0.50Al0.50N alaşımı 45,14 cal/cell.K’ de ve Ga0.750Al0.250N alaşımı ise 45,14 cal/cell.K’ de yaklaşmaktadır. vii. Fonon dispersiyon eğrilerinde, Ga atomu yerine Al atomu ilave edildikçe, optik frekans değerinin maksimum ve minimum değeri artmaktadır. viii. Fonon dispersiyon eğrilerinde, Ga atomu yerine Al atomu ilave edildikçe, optik dallar arasındaki frekans değeri azalmakta, akustik ve optik dallar arasındaki frekans değeri artmaktadır. Ga1-xAlxN alaşımları için Ga elementi yerine Al elementi eklendikçe yasak band aralığı, artmaktadır. Tüm alaşımlar direkt bant geçişine sahip, yarı iletken özellik göstermektedirler. Soğurma katsayısının, Dielektrik fonksiyonun imajiner kısmının ve sönüm katsayısının yükselmeye başladığı değerlerin aynı değerler olduğu ve yasak bant aralığına çok yakın olduğu görülmektedir. Kırılma indisi ile dielektrik sabitinin reel kısmının benzer özellikler gösterdiği görülmektedir. Kayıp fonksiyonun temel piki, plasmon frekansı en yüksek enerji değerine x= 0.75’ de 19.84 eV değerinde almıştır.	Translation - Turkish Investigation of Structural, Electronic, Elastic, Optical and Dynamical Properties of Ga1-xAlxN alloys We have predicted structural, optical, electronic, thermodynamic, dynamic features and elastic constants of Ga1-xAlxN alloys by employing a combination of ab initio methods, Castep program, based on Density Functional Theory (DFT). Generalized Gradient Approximation (GGA) has been used as exchange correlation. Elastic constants for compounds have been used in order to calculate Bulk modulus, forbidden band gap, Fermi energy and Kramers-Kronig relations; dielectric constants, refractive index, absorption coefficient, energy loss function and conductance. Bulk modulus, Poisson ratio, Lame constant and Kleiman parameter have been found based on elastic constants. The properties of ternary alloys have been investigated with reference to known characteristics of binary alloys. The results from are consistent with each other and former available theoretical and experimental data in literature. Ga1-xAlxN alloys have semiconductor properties with indirect band transmission whose band gaps increase 2.19, 2.62 and 3.43eV with increasing Al concentration x = 0.25, 0.50 and 0.75 respectively. They form cubic structure with 3 elastic constants for x = 0.75 and 0.25, and tetragonal structure with 6 elastic constants for x = 0.50. Ga0.75Al0.25N and Ga0.75Al0.25N alloys are elastic whereas Ga0.25Al0.75N is fragile. Compressibility varies depending on increasing x where its maximum is at x = 0.25 with 0.0053 1/GPa. Real parts of refraction index and dielectric constant demonstrate similar properties. Characteristic peak of lose function is at x = 0.75 with the value 19.84 eV that is the highest Plasmon frequency. By substituting Al with Ga, maximum and minimum of optical frequency at phonon dispersion curves increase. Finally Ga1-xAlxN alloys with large band gap are suitable semiconductors for optoelectronic devices such as diodes and lasers. 1. Introduction Recently, there has been an ever-growing demand on semiconductor alloys owing to their electronic and optical properties. That’s why II-VI and III-V compounds have been studied widely. BN, GaN and InN semiconductors have been focus of interest by virtue of their wide band gap and capability to be used in data storage in electronic devices [1-7]. Continuously developing group III-Nitride technology contributes to improvements of light emitting diodes (LEDs), laser diodes (LDs) [1] and modulation supported transistors (MODFET). AlN which have high melting point, high thermal conductivity and large Bulk modulus, is one of the promising materials for optoelectronic devices working under extreme conditions. On the other hand, GaN, a mechanically stable semiconductor material, has direct band gap, stiffness and large heat capacity. AlxGa1−xN alloys are capable of providing many abilities for optoelectronic devices and high frequency tools and offering wide wavelength. Especially AlxGa1−xN alloys are employed as inhibiter material for nitride electronic and optoelectronic devices in the active site of most nitrate based devices. In this paper we present optimum optical, electronic, dynamical, thermodynamic properties and second order elastic constants calculations by tuning doping concentration x for AlxGa1−xN alloys acquired from Castep package program based on Density Functional Theory (DFT). In the second part of the paper, methods used in computation are revealed. In the third section, calculations are demonstrated and compared to available theoretical and experimental data in the literature. In the last section, obtained results are discussed. 2. Calculations The ab initio calculations were performed using CASTEP (Cambridge Sequential Total Energy Package) code based on Density Functional Theory using plane wave method. Norm-conserving psedopotentials for Ga, Al and N were obtained with Troullier simulation and GGA approximation parametrized by Perdev, Burke and Emzerhof [12]. Valance electron configurations for Gallium, Nitrogen and Aluminum are 3d10 4s2 4p1, 2s2 2p3 and 3s2 3p1 respectively. Norm-conserving psedopotentials were utilized in order to describe electron-ion interaction. Plane wave functions of valance electrons were defined by a plane wave base constant, and norm-conserving psedopotentials were calculated with a plane wave energy Ecut. The inter-related-space integration upon Brillouin Zone was equated to a Monkhorst-Pack mesh used by a careful sample in a number ending in k [13]. Wave functions were extended up to a kinetic energy cut off 600 eV value in the state of plane waves. For x compounds, k = 6 x 6 x 5, and cut-off value is 600 eV. Charge densities were approximated to 1 x 10-6 eV/atom, the self-consistent calculations. During optimization process, energy shift, maximum force, maximum strain, transposition tolerance are 2 x l0-5 eV/atom, 0.05 eV/A, 0.1 GPa and 0.002 Å respectively. Structural properties of GaN and AlN binary compounds were found within surface centered cubic structure (F-43M). Structural properties of A1-xBxC type ternary alloys for x = 0.25, 0.50, 0.75 compounds at equilibrium states have been calculated with CASTEP by optimizing for different cut-off values. 3. Results 3.1 Electronic and structural properties GaN has 8 atoms (4 Ga, 4 N) in unit cell of surface centered cubic structure (F-43M). When we substitute Ga with Al, due to the increase in the parameter x of Ga1-xAlxN, possible crystal structures are simple cubic (P-43M) for Ga0.75Al0.25N and Ga0.25Al0.75N and tetragonal (P4M2) for Ga0.5Al0.5N. Lattice constants, cell volume and band gap were calculated for each x value of Ga1-xAlxN. Comparison of our predicted cell volume and band gap results to experimental and theoretical data in literature are demonstrated in Table 1 [22-23]. Lattice constants of Ga1-xAlxN alloys were computed as 4.49 Å for x = 0.25, 3.14 Å and 4.43 Å for x = 0.5 and 4.36 Å for x = 0.75. These lattice constants are consistent with the values previously calculated in literature [23-25]. Table 1. It has been observed that band structures and density of states are in agreement. In the figure, bands housing continuous and dense energy values have sharp density of states peaks. It’s observed that all of these alloys are semiconductor with direct band gap. The calculated values are compared to available theoretical and experimental values [16-17] and they are shown in Table 1. Band gap values are consistent with the literature data. Figure 1. Elastic properties Elastic constants form a relation between mechanical and dynamical characteristics of solids and give insight into especially stiffness and stability of alloys. Here, second order elastic constants (Cij) are calculated with “Volume-conserving” technique [18, 19]. Six Independent elastic constants are needed Cij (C11, C12, C13, C33, C44 and C66) for stable tetragonal crystal structure and Born-Huang criteria are required to meet for stability {C11>0, C33>0, C44>0, C66>0, (C11− C12) >0, (C11+ C33− 2C13) >0, [2(C11+ C12) + C33+ 4C13] >0} [20]. 3 independent elastic constants are required to be Cij (C11, C12 andC44) and need to meet the Born-Huang criteria {(C11−C12)>0, C11>0, C44>0 and 2(C11+C12)>0} [22] for cubic crystals in order to maintain stability [21]. 3 elastic constants for Ga0.75Al0.25N and Ga0.25Al0.75N Primitive cubic (P-43M) alloys and 6 elastic constants were found for Primitive Tetragonal (P-4M2) structure. Elastic constants for all alloys meet the criteria for stability and are demonstrated in Table 2. Table 2. Elastic constants for Ga1-xAlxN. Young modulus, Shear modulus (G), compressibility, B/G ratio and Poisson ratio (v) are worthy parameters for stiffness and durability of materials [24]. If B/G is higher than 1.75, alloys are flexible, otherwise they are fragile [33]. The alloys with higher Bulk modulus (B) are less compressible. While Cauchy pressure (P = C12-C44) is positive for ionic compounds C12-C44 > 0, it is negative for covalent compounds C12-C44 < 0 [34]. Negative Cauchy pressure (P) indicates that material has oriented bond where materials with positive values have metallic bonds. Poisson ratio known as compressibility ratio and materials tend to be incompressible when the ratio approaches to 1/2 [36]. Poisson ratio can be an indicator of flexibility where the materials with ratio v > 1/3 are flexible and the ones with the ratio v θD, energy of all of the modes is equal to kBT, otherwise high frequency modes might be expected to freeze. Figure 12. The temperature dependence of the vibrational contribution to the free energy, enthalpy and entropy for Ga1-xAlxN. Temperature dependence of free energy, enthalpy and entropy for Ga1-xAlxN alloys between 0 K and 1000 K are shown in Figure 12. As temperature goes up, enthalpy and entropy rise whereas free energy declines. 4. Conclusion In this study structural, electronic, optical features and elastic constants of Ga1-xAlxN alloys investigated by using Castep code based on Density Functional Theory (DFT). Exchange correlation has been taken as GGA. Elastic constants for zero pressure and based on elastic constants; Bulk modulus (B), Shear Modulus (G), compressibility, B/G ratio, Poisson ratio (v) and Cauchy Pressure have been computed by Castep. The results compputed for Ga1-xAlxN alloys are given: i. Ga0.75Al0.25N and Ga0.50Al0.50N alloys are flexible since they have B/G ratio greater than 1.75, while Ga0.25Al0.75N is fragile due to having B/G ratio lower than 1.75. ii. Inter atomic forces are mostly central forces due to the fact that Poisson ratios (v) vary in the interval of 0.25-0.5. iii. Ga0.75Al0.25N and Ga0.75Al0.25N alloys are elastic since they have Poisson ratio v greater than 1/3 whereas Ga0.25Al0.75N is fragile because it has Poisson ratio v lower than 1/3. iv. Ga0.25Al0.75N has the greatest Bulk modulus (203.9 GPa) amongst the Ga1-xAlxN alloys and it has least compressibility with the value 0.0049 1/GPa. Compressibility increases with increasing x variable resulting in the comparison: Ga0.75Al0.25N > Ga0.5Al0.5N > Ga0.25Al0.75N. v. Kleinman parameters (ξ) are found 0.64 and 0.61 for Ga0.75Al0.25N and Ga0.25Al0.75N respectively. On the other hand, it was not able to be calculated for Ga0.50Al0.50N since it has tetragonal structure. vi. Heat capacity at constant volume, CV for Ga0.75Al0.25N alloy approaches to classic Dulong-Petit limit at 45.8 cal/cell.K where those for Ga0.50Al0.50N and Ga0.750Al0.250N alloys approach at 45.14 and 45.14 cal/cell.K respectively. vii. At phonon dispersion curves, substitution of Al atom with of Ga atom causes rise in maximum and minimum values of optical frequency. viii. At phonon dispersion curves, adding Al atom instead of Ga atom leads to decrease in frequency difference between optical branches, increase in frequency difference between acoustic and optical branches. For Ga1-xAlxN alloys, forbidden band gap widens as Al is substituted with of Ga. All of these alloys are observed to have semiconductor characteristics and direct band transition. Absorption coefficient, increasing point of imaginary part of dielectric function and extinction coefficient are observed to be same and very close to forbidden band gap. It is seen that refraction index and real part of dielectric constant have similar properties. Finally, characteristic peak of loss function reaches its maximum value 19.84 eV at x = 0.75.

Source text - English Overlapping Vocabulary and Comprehension: Context Clues Complement Semantic Gradients We are both former upper elementary and middle-grades teachers who currently teach undergraduate and graduate education literacy methods classes, and we are always aiming at the application of best practice. To this end, we spend a lot of time “out in the field,” trying out strategies with teachers to ensure that they work well with children. As part of their coursework, our graduate students delve into the complex connections between vocabulary growth and improved reading comprehension. They’re conversant with the research (e.g., Blachowicz & Fisher, 2006; Davis, 1944; Freebody & Anderson, 1983) that indicates that the size of an individual’s vocabulary is a powerful predictor of how well that person comprehends. They enter our classes eager to improve their own vocabulary instruction in order to bolster their students’ vocabulary learning. Many students readily admit, however, that their current methods for teaching vocabulary do not always engage their students, nor do they lead to longterm improvements in comprehension of text. Despite the clear and longstanding connections between meaning vocabulary and reading comprehension, the fact is that programs designed to teach vocabulary have often had surprisingly little impact on overall reading performance (Blachowicz & Fisher, 2006). We believe one possible reason for this small impact is that teaching methods may not make the vocabulary-to-comprehension connection explicit for students. In other words, students may “learn” words as discrete meanings, but they don’t necessarily connect these meanings back to the larger context of the passage. We have developed a teaching technique that attempts to address this vocabulary-tocomprehension disconnect. In this article, we detail how we combined two strategies, context clues and semantic gradients, to “stack the deck” in students’ favor as they critically examined shades of meaning among related sets of words. First, we will discuss context clues. Next, we will explain how we have used semantic gradients. Finally, we will describe how we combined these two methods and provide examples. Context Clues Context clues are very important for broadly comprehending text as well as for specifically learning new words. Instruction in context problem solving pays great dividends. It’s akin to the old adage about catching fish for a man as opposed to teaching that man how to fish. Estimates (Nagy & Anderson, 1984) indicate that school-age children learn approximately 4,000 words in a school year, but that only 400 of these are learned through direct instruction. So if, on average, 90% of words are learned through repeated, meaningful encounters in direct experience, it only makes sense to optimize this avenue for learning. According to Adams (1990), however, only 5–10% ofwords are learned through a single exposure in a naturally occurring context. This brings us back to the notion of manipulating context in order to again stack the deck in the reader’s favor.Because they are so transportable, context clues merit careful teaching. Students need to be sensitized to the various types of context clues that are available to them—they need to gradually become aware that authors choose their words carefully. Writers are at times subtle and economical in their word choices, leaking information on to the page carefully, purposefully—yet at other times gushing information in a torrent of words. Students need to see and discuss various levels of context explicitness so they can eventually determine for themselves how supportive the context is. They need a lot of practice in how to use context as they read large amounts of appropriately challenging text. Because the chances of learning a new word from context are slim (Adams, 1990; Stahl & Nagy, 2006), we teach our university students to “beef up” context (that is, manipulate it for teaching purposes). We start by introducing context clues that are “thin,” or not very supportive. For example, in the sentence, “The arbitrator and the plaintiff discussed the case at length” the context is not explicit enough to aid the reader in identifying the meaning of arbitrator. Next, we enrich the context, deliberately stacking the deck in the reader’s favor. We provide a sentence such as, “The arbitrator, the judge who had the final say, awarded $50,000 to the plaintiff.” This enriched context leaves little doubt as to the word’s meaning. A second example of a contextually thin sentence could be, “Unlike Rebecca, Tammy was very morose.” This context could actually be misleading to the reader (e.g., if Rebecca was described as tall in the story, the student could infer that morose means short). This sentence with a richer context could be, “Unlike Rebecca, who was very enthusiastic, Tammy was very morose.” should not be thought of as synonyms). For example, initially we might ask children to array the following familiar words: big, little, huge, tiny, and average. Through discussion and consensus, the continuum might be huge, big, average, little, and tiny listed from largest to smallest. Children can later build on this basic continuum by adding words with more specific meanings (e.g., by appropriately placing words such as gargantuan, colossal, minute, and microscopic along the gradient). Because it is helpful and reinforcing to teach words in interrelated groupings (Stahl & Nagy, 2006), these continuums are theoretically sound in addition to being motivating for students. Some teachers might question what to do if children do not have adequate background knowledge of the word meanings. Teachers we have worked with have explained that students do not have to “know” every single word meaning richly and deeply to get started. Knowledge of a few “anchor words” can aid students in learning the other words along the continuum. It is the teacher’s job to decide whether the students have adequate background knowledge, or need to build knowledge, to begin. We have developed two types of semantic gradients that we use with students. The first, and most supportive, is selection. In selection (see Figure 1), the students are provided with a partially completed gradient and a word box from which they choose words to place along that gradient. In section 1 of Figure 1, the words despondent and euphoric are already placed at the two extremes of the gradient. The students’ job is to select words from the word box, place them in order along the gradient, and justify their thinking. Section 2 shows the completed gradient. The second, and less supportive, type of semantic gradient is generation. In Figure 2, the students were given the extreme ends of the continuum—scalding and freezing—and generated the remaining words in between. The major difference between selection and generation is that in generation the students are not provided with a word box. This makes generation less supportive but at the same time allows the students more creativity, flexibility, and ownership. These two gradients were developed for sixth graders. Simpler or more challenging lists that are age appropriate may be used depending on the needs of children. Semantic gradients require children to think about and explain shades of meaning. When students must persuade their classmates or group members, they deepen and broaden their understanding of these words. We have found that students willingly use dictionaries and thesauruses in order to solve these puzzles. Conversation has been rich and heated at times, as both our students and our students’ students defend and justify their points of view. We like to have students working individually at times, but most often we want them to be paired or in triads, negotiating and explaining their thinking and reasoning. In the early stages the teacher will think aloud regarding her thought processes, but he or she soon cedes responsibility and control to the students (Pearson & Gallagher, 1983). Overlapping Context Clues and Semantic Gradients As we mentioned in the introduction, we have found that semantic gradients alone are not always sufficient in supporting students as they attempt to connect individual word meanings back to the larger context of a passage. To address this vocabulary to comprehension disconnect, we combined context clues and semantic gradients.First, we provided students with a few sentences in a cloze-type situation with a deliberately manipulated context. We typically provide increasingly more contextual support in the sentences. For example, we provide the following sentence for the students: “The teacher was _______________.” After some discussion, and after the students realize that a huge range of words are possible to complete this sentence, we introduce Examples of Manipulated Contexts That Match Gradients Sets I, II, and III complement one another and represent a sequence of instruction. For example, in Set I, sentence (a) is intended to be open ended. The same sentence (a) is enriched in Set II by adding information (“He couldn’t wait to see his new puppy”). Finally, in Set III gradient (a) matches the previous two contexts. Set I: Basic contexts Jimmy (many appropriate possibilities ) all the way home. (a) Jimmy’s team their opponents. (b) Jimmy’s mom during the movie. (c) Jimmy felt when he got his test back. (d) Jimmy was dressed properly for the weather. He was extremely proud of the award that he had received Next, we enrich the sentence to read, “The teacher was _____________ because the class behaved so well.” With this slightly richer context, the students narrow the options to happy or pleased. Next, we provide a different context. “The teacher was ______________ because the class was so unruly. She felt betrayed after she worked so hard to help them.” During discussion, the students come to see that this different context narrows the choices to disappointed, upset, or livid. The final sentence is “The teacher was __________ because the class was so unruly. The students had never seen her so out of control.” In this context, the students discuss how livid might be the most appropriate match for the phrase “out of control.” Throughout this entire sequence, students talk about their choices, noting the difference in meaning and nuance. They are reminded that authors choose their words carefully in order to convey meaning. After several varieties of teacher-developed gradients, the students then take over in creating contexts and gradients themselves. In Figure 4, seventh graders developed their own gradient, which they coupled with three minicontexts. They proudly presented these creations to their peers for discussion and solution. These students were dealing with a gradient that they arrayed according to speed, but they noted other shades of meaning. They pointed out that both hobbled and dawdled indicated slow movement, but that one implied avoidance with purposeful movement while the other was probably due to handicap or injury. They also noted that you must often search beyond the sentence with the targeted word in order to fully ascertain meaning. Of course, when students themselves are able to create the gradients and the minicontexts, we’re confident they have further internalized the notion of how context can clarify word meaning. Our students’ students have progressed to the point where they are, in many cases, doing the majority of the work as they develop new gradients. They’re discovering different shades of meaning (balmy may be used to describe the weather but not a hamburger) and delight in sharing their creations. In one of our teachers’ classrooms, some fifth graders physically demonstrated the words hobbled, strutted, and dawdled in order to make Figure 4 more explicit. Context is so important to reading proficiency, and the strategies we have described truly require students to look carefully at the subtle aspects of words that help to determine the construction of meaning. We believe the real benefit of overlapping these two strategies is enabling students to reconnect individual word meanings to the text, helping them bridge the divide between vocabulary and comprehension. Remember that you’re not the only teacher in your classroom. Your own students can run with a variety of strategies if given the time, opportunity, and initial instruction. The Ag buffer films of 40 nm thickness were used as substitutes for expensive single crystal metallic substrates. In-situ, Reflection High-Energy Electron Diffraction (RHEED) was used to monitor the surface structure of the Ag films and to observe the formation of the characteristic h-BN diffraction pattern. Further evidence of the growth of h-BN was provided by Attenuated Total Reflectance Spectroscopy (ATR), which showed the characteristic h-BN peaks at ~780 cm-1 and 1367.4 cm-1. Ex-situ Photoelectron Spectroscopy (PES) showed that the surface of the h-BN films are stoichiometric. The physical structure of the films was confirmed by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). The h-BN films grew as large, sub-millimeter sheets with nano- and micro-sheets scattered on the surface. The h-BN sheets can be exfoliated by the micromechanical adhesive tape method. Spectral analysis was performed by Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS) in order to identify the h-BN sheets once adhered to the tape. The use of thin film Ag allows for reduced use of Ag and makes it possible to adjust the surface morphology of the thin film prior to h-BN growth. I. INTRODUCTION Boron nitride (BN) is a wide band gap (~5 eV) refractory ceramic often used in high temperature applications such as lubricants due to its chemical stability [1]. Single layer, hexagonal BN (h-BN), also known as white graphene, is a polymorph of interest with a breadth of applications such as photonic, thermo-electronic and heterostructure devices [2, 3, 4]. It has a hexagonal crystalline structure with lattice constant of ~2.5 Å. With roughly a 1.5% mismatch with respect to the lattice of graphene [5], the similarity of h-BN to graphene has played a key role in the growth and characterization of both materials on their own as well as the intercalation of h-BN and graphene layers to create novel nano-structures [6, 7, 8]. A variety of complex physical and chemical techniques have been used to grow h-BN on diverse ceramic and semiconductor substrates [9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16], which often bind in a highly interactive manner with the BN film. Nonetheless, the study of h-BN as an isolated system is of importance for potential applications, similar to those of graphene, where conductivity is an issue (i.e. gating devices). Hence, it is important to understand the fundamental properties of the electronic and geometric structure of h-BN in a weakly interactive environment. We used an approach to the synthesis of h-BN that was similar to the deposition of graphene on single crystal Ag. There, the weak interaction between film and substrate allow for the study of graphene as an isolated system [17]. 2 It has been shown that crystalline Ag surfaces provide ideal metallic platforms for the study of h-BN properties, which is in particular due to the vanishing BN-Ag interface energetics, observed both, theoretically and experimentally [18]. In contrast, most other transition metals form highly interactive interfaces with monolayer and bulk BN to the extent that BN often forms superstructured lattices rather than a 2D hexagonal polymorph [19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28]. Although the use of single crystal Ag substrates is viable for the growth of h-BN, it is impractical in the large scale given the high cost of these substrates. In order to circumvent this issue, we have used thin crystalline Ag films as growth platforms as substitutes for expensive single crystal Ag substrates. We have synthesized h-BN films by Pulsed Laser Deposition (PLD), a state of the art thin film synthesis technique [29], on 40 nm thick fiber-oriented Ag(111) buffer layers on SrTiO3(001). The h-BN films were characterized in-situ via Reflection High-Energy Electron Diffraction (RHEED) and ex-situ by Attenuated Total Reflectance (ATR), Photoelectron Spectroscopy (PES), Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS), and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). II. EXPERIMENTAL DETAILS Figure 1. Schematic drawing of the PLD system deposition chamber. The experimental growth chamber, shown in Figure 1, is attached to a pumping assembly that includes a turbomolecular pump and an ion pump. The chamber pressure was lower than 2×10-9 Torr during deposition. The substrate surface temperature was measured using an optical pyrometer through an IR transmissive viewing port. A Staib Instruments RH15 RHEED system consisting of a remotely controlled electron gun and a phosphor screen, was arranged on an axis parallel to the surface of the sample. RHEED patterns were collected with an electron beam energy of 15.2 keV and current of ~0.2 μA. The electron beam diameter was ~300 μm and was incident at an angle of ~2°. 3 A remotely-controlled multi-target carrousel from Excel Instruments was used to hold six ablation targets for growth of complex multilayers and superlattices. Ablation was performed using a Continuum Surelite III-10 YAG laser (1064 nm, 850 mJ/pulse) with second and fourth harmonic generators used to produce 266 nm, 100 mJ/pulse, 5 ns width pulses. The laser is operable at up to 10 Hz with a circular spot size of ~9 mm in diameter. The laser pulses are directed at UV mirrors and are focused on the target surface inside the chamber with a UV lens (fused silica) at an angle of incidence of 45°. The fluence (pulse energy/ablation spot) was held between 5-6 J/cm2 during deposition. A quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) by Inficon (SQM 160) was used to measure the deposition rate. Prior to deposition on the substrate, the QCM sensor was placed at the substrate position and the deposition rate was calibrated for every film. The deposition rate, independently verified by ellipsometry, was found to be consistent over several weeks with variation of less than 10%. SEM/EDS were performed using a Phenom Pro X Desktop SEM at 5 kV for surface imaging and spectral analysis at a resolution of 17 nm. Photoelectron Spectroscopy measurements were collected using a double-pass cylindrical mirror analyzer (PHI 25-260AR) with pass energy of 15 eV (with resolution Edet  0.02PE = 0.3 eV). The excitation source was a non-monochromatic Al Kα (1486.6 eV with 0.85 eV FWHM) X-ray source (PHI 04-500). The total resolution of the system was 0.9 eV. Attenuated Total Reflectance (ATR) was performed using a Thermo Nicolet Nexus 470 FT-IR. A Omnic Sampler Horizontal Attenuated Total Reflectance (HATR) accessory was attached for ATR mode. The HATR uses a Ge crystal for scans in the range of 4000-600 cm-1 at a resolution of 4 cm-1. Data sets consisted of 32 averaged scans per sample. III. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Commercially available single crystal SrTiO3(001) substrates were used as the platform for the growth of the 40 nm buffer Ag(111) layers and the h-BN film. The SrTiO3(001) substrates were cleaned in-situ by IR laser heating to approximately 400 °C. Figure 2 (a) shows the RHEED pattern of the clean SrTiO3(001) surface, which displays thin reciprocal lattice rods and Kikuchi lines along the [100] azimuth. The buffer Ag(111) layers were grown at 150 °C with a deposition rate of ~ 2 nm per minute (~9.4 ML/min). The RHEED pattern of Ag(111)/SrTiO3(001) is shown in Figure 2 (b), which displays thin modulated and curved rods. This pattern shows superimposed families of rods due to the [211] and [101] azimuths [30, 31], which elucidate the hexagonal lattice of the Ag(111) film and indicate that the film consists of a random azimuthal distribution of Ag(111) normal crystals (i.e. fiber-oriented or 2D polycrystal [31, 32, 33]). The curvature of the rods, away from the sample surface shadow (bottom of RHEED pattern) are, in fact, the result of the intersection of the Ewald sphere with reciprocal lattice cylinders, which provide further evidence of the azimuthal randomness of normally oriented Ag(111) crystalline faces. Boron nitride films were deposited at 200 °C, with a deposition rate of 0.7 nm per minute (~2 ML/min), on fiber-oriented Ag(111)/ 4 SrTiO3(001). Figure 2 (c) shows the RHEED pattern of a 10 monolayer (ML) thick (33.3 Å) BN film, which exhibits the [100] and [102] rings of h-BN [9, 34, 18]. Also visible is the specular spot of Ag(111)/SrTiO3(001). In general, the sharpness of all RHEED pattern features presented are indicative of highly ordered surfaces. Figure 2. RHEED patterns of (a) clean SrTiO3(001) substrate, (b) fiber-oriented Ag(111)/SrTiO3(001) and (c) h-BN/Ag(111)/SrTiO3(001). Figure 3 (a) shows a 5 keV SEM image of h-BN/Ag(111)/SrTiO3(001). For this sample, BN and Ag were deposited at slightly different angles to produce a shadow effect using a metallic tab in order to leave the Ag layer partially uncoated. The fiber texture of the Ag layer, anticipated from RHEED (Figure 2 (b)) is manifest in the physical structure of the film which consists of a random azimuthal distribution of crystallites. The appearance of rings rather than rods in the RHEED pattern of the h-BN film seen in Figure 2 (c) is due to the formation of h-BN nano-sheets and nano-flakes on an underlying uniform h-BN layer. The underlying layer thus likely forms through the 2D growth of smaller h-BN domains which coalesced to cover large areas. The interaction of the h-BN domains and the Ag surface is weak due to the interplay of electrostatic repulsion and van der Waals forces balancing beyond typical covalent bonding distances and thus, inhibiting the influence of the substrate on the azimuthal orientation of h-BN [35]. 5 Figure 3. In order to examine the h-BN films independently from the Ag(111)/SrTiO3(001) growth platforms they were exfoliated using the adhesive tape method often employed to cleave graphene [36, 37]. To facilitate exfoliation, the films were heated up to 400 °C for 1 minute. Figure 3 (b) shows a 5 keV SEM image of the exfoliated h-BN film which consists of large sub-millimeter fragmented sheets, likely due to fracture of crystallite boundaries during lift off. Figure 3 (c) shows 5 keV EDS spectra acquired at sample points on one of the BN fragments and uncovered adhesive tape. The drastic change of concentrations observed from the C K and N K peaks indicate that the flat regions with lighter shade (Figure 3 (b)) are BN despite the insensitivity of EDS to boron. The ability to readily exfoliate large h-BN domains from epitaxially grown films improves the likelihood of this technique being used in industrial applications. 6 In addition to spectral analysis by EDS, PES was used to characterize the chemical structure of the films ex-situ [38, 39]. Samples were exposed to air momentarily during transfer from the PLD deposition chamber to the PES analysis chamber. The atomic ratio of B:N for the h-BN films was calculated to be 1.13. This calculation was performed using PES data obtained from a commercially available (Sigma Aldrich) h-BN reference sample. Figure 4 shows narrow scans of the (a) O 1s, (b) N 1s, (c) C 1s, and (d) B 1s core levels and their respective fits. The components of elemental peaks from the film, that is, N 1s and B 1s, indicate that the main film impurity was adventitious oxygen, as evidenced by the electron density shifts toward lower kinetic energy due to oxidation states [10, 40, 41, 42, 43, 12]. Additional surface contaminants are adventitious carbon and water, which did not directly interact with the film as shown by the electron density shifts in the O 1s and C 1s core levels due to CO, CO2 and hydroxides [42, 43, 44]. Oxidation and surface impurities were attributed to the brief exposure to air during transport for analysis. In addition, peak broadening to some extent was likely due to flaking and nano-sheet formation. Thus, it is evident that the surface contaminants did not affect the chemistry of the h-BN films, which remained stoichiometric. Table 1 summarizes the assignments of the peak components for each core level, their kinetic energies (and corresponding binding energies) as well as references used in the criteria for peak assignment. Previously, Gorbachev et al., [45] have shown that it is possible to identify single and multilayer h-BN by tracking small shifts in the position of the characteristic E2g (in-plane) phonon mode peak at for h-BN, usually observed around 1367 cm-1 [46, 41, 42, 11, 47]. Figure 5 (a) shows ATR spectra of 0, 1, 2 and 10 ML of h-BN deposited on Ag(111)/SrTiO3(001). The characteristic features of h-BN [10, 42, 47] are immediately evident on the bulk spectrum (10 ML); the out-of-plane and in-plane modes at 780 cm-1 and 1367.4 cm-1, respectively. Figure 5 (b) shows a narrowed version of Figure 5 (a) in order to focus on the position of the in-plane peak. For emphasis, only the spectrum of bulk h-BN (10 ML) was scaled (1/100), and all spectra have been stacked. Fits for the spectra of 1 and 2 ML films are superimposed as viewing guides. As expected, the in-plane peak is absent in the spectrum of Ag(111)SrTiO3(001) (i.e. 0 ML). Furthermore, the position of the in-plane peak is modulated in accordance with the h-BN film thickness; at 1 ML the peak appears at slightly higher wavenumber (1371.7 cm-1) with respect to the bulk value and at 2 ML it shifts to a slightly lower value (1357.7 cm-1) with some extent of broadening likely due to scarce domains of 1 and perhaps 3 ML. These observations are consistent with ones previously reported [45], and confirm the ability to grow single layer h-BN. Our characterization of 1 to 10 ML films of hexagonal boron nitride has shown that Pulsed Laser Deposition can be used to controllably deposit 1 to 10 ML films of h-BN on fiber-oriented Ag(111)/SrTiO3(001). The 1 ML boron nitride films, known as white grapheme, can be easily exfoliated. The use of the thin silver films greatly reduces the amount of silver needed in the synthesis of the h-BN. This synthesis of h-BN may be of interest to those needing a non-conductive single layer compound to be paired with graphene in single atomic layer nano-devices. 8 Figure 5. CONCLUSION We have presented evidence for the growth of h-BN films using Pulsed Laser Deposition on fiber-oriented Ag(111)/SrTiO3(001) through the use of physical (RHEED, SEM and ATR) and chemical (PES and EDS) characterization techniques. The ability to grow h-BN on a 2D-polycrystalline Ag(111) surface highlights the weak interaction of the film with Ag and provides an ideal platform for the study of h-BN in isolation. This also emphasizes the potential of using inexpensive Ag films to grow h-BN as substitutes for single crystal Ag substrates. In addition, post-deposition annealing facilitated micromechanical exfoliation of large multilayer h-BN domains, which allowed for the close examination of h-BN and opens the possibility of simplifying the process of growth and exfoliation for potential future applications in nano-devices. We also proved the formation of monolayer h-BN by tracking the thickness-dependent modulatory behavior of the in-plane phonon mode peak through the use of ATR. This result reiterates the efficacy of the Ag(111) films as growth surfaces even for the synthesis of atomically thin layers. Translation - Turkish TEK KATMANLI ALTIGEN BORON NİTRAT (BEYAZ GRAFEN, h-BN)’İN FİBER-YÖNELİMLİ Ag(111)/SrTiO3(001) ÜZERİNDE DARBELİ LAZER İLE BİRİKTİRİLMESİ Daniel Velázquez1, Rachel Seibert1, Hamdi Man1, Linda Spentzouris1, and Jeff Terry1 1Fizik Bölümü, Illinois Institute of Teccnology, Chicago, Illinois 60616, USA [email protected] Beyaz grafen olarak da bilinen alltıgen Boron Nitrat’ın 1-10 arası çok katlı filmlerinin SrTiO3(001) alttaşı üzerine kaplanmış fiber yönelimli gümüş (Ag) tampon filmlerinin üzerine darbeli lazer biriktirme yöntemiyle üretildiğini rapor ediyoruz. Tek kristal metalik alttaşlar pahalı olduğu için 40 nm kalınlıklı gümüş tampon filmler bunların yerine kullanılmaktadır. RHEED, biriktirme sırasında Ag filmlerinin yüzey yapısını ve karakteristik h-BN kırınım deseninin yapısını gözlemlemek için kullanıldı. h-BN’nın üretilmesinin bir başka kanıtı da malzemenin işine işleyen toplam yansıma spektroskopisi sayesinde elde edilmiştir. Bu teknik karakteristik h-BN tepe noktaları 780 cm-1 ve 1307.4 cm-1’de gösterilmiştir. Biriktirme sonrası uygulanan fotoelektron spektroskopisi h-BN filmlerinin yüzeyinin kimyasal orantılı olduğunu göstermiştir. Filmlerin fiziksel yapısı taramalı elektron mikroskobu ile doğrulanmıştır. h-BN filmleri yüzeye saçılmış nano ve mikro tabakalardan oluşan milimetre altı tabakalardan oluşur. h-BN tabakaları mikrokanik adhesive bant metodu ile yüzeyden ayrıştırılabilir. Spektral analiz enerji dağılım spektroskopisi metodu ile h-BN tabakalarını ayırmadan sonra belirleyebilmek için yapıldı. Gümüş ince filmlerinin kullanımı sayesinde kullanılan gümüş miktarı az tutulmuş ve h-BN üretiminden önceki yüzey şekillerini ayarlamayı mümkün hale getirmiştir. 1.Giriş Boron Nitrat (BN) makine yağları gibi sıcaklık uygulamalarında kimyasal stabiletesi yüzünden kulanılan geniş bant aralığına sahip bir yansıtıcı seramiktir[1]. Tek katmanlı altıgen BN(h-BN), beyaz grafen olarak da bilinir ve fotonik, termo-elektronik ve tek yapılı cihazlar gibi çeşitli uygulamarda kullanılan bir çok şekillidir [2,3,4]. Altıgen kristal yapısına sahiptir ve örgü sabiti 2.5 Å’dır. Grafenin örgüsüne oranla yaklaşık %1.5’luk yanlış eşleşme ile [5], h-BN’nin grafite olan benzerliği, h-BN ve grafen tabakalarının özgün nano yapılar oluşturmak için araya ilave edilmesi ile birlikte bu iki malzemenin kendi alttaşlarının üretim ve karakterizasyonunda anahtar bir rol üstlenmiştir [6,7,8]. BN ile sıklıkla oldukça yüksek bir aktiflik ile bağ yapan h-BN’ı çeşitli seramik ve yarıiletken alttaşlar [9,10,11,12] üzerinde biriktirmek için birçok karmaşık fiziksel ve kimyasal teknik kullanıldı. Yine de, izole bir sistem olarak h-BN çalışması iletkenlikle ilgili grafen gibi potensiyel uygulamalardan dolayı önemlidir. Böylece, h-BN’ın zayıf etkileşimli bir ortamda elektronik ve geometrik yapısının temel özelliklerini anlamak öznemlidir. h-BN sentezi için tek kristal Ag üzerine grafen biriktirmeye benzer bir yaklaşımda bulunduk. Burada, film ve alttaş arasındaki zayıf etkileşim grafenin yalıtılmış bir sistem olarak çalışılmasına izin verir [13]. Kristal yapılı Ag yüzeylerinin h-BN özellikleri çalışmaları için ideal metalik platformlar sağladığı daha önce gösterilmişti. Bunlar hem teorik hem de deneysel olarak gözlemlenmiş BN-Ag arayüzeyi enerjilerini yok ettiğinden dolayıdır [14]. Diğer taraftan, bütün diğer geçiş metalleri tek katmanlı ve yığın BN ile interaktif arayüzler oluştururlar ama bazen BN 2D altıgen çoklu yapıdansa süperyapılı örgüler oluşturur [15,16,17,18,19,20,21,22,23,24]. Tek kristal Ag alttaşlarının kullanımı h-BN üretimi için uygulanabilir olduğu halde bu alttaşların yüksek maliyeti yüzünden çok miktarda kullanımı pratik değildir. Bu problemi çözmek için biz ince kristal Ag filmlerini pahalı tek kristaller yerine birikitrme platformu olarak kullandık. h-BN filmlerini bir ince film üretme teknoloji harikası olan Darbeli Lazer Biriktirme (DLB) ile SrTiO3(001) 40 nm kalınlığında fiber yönelimli Ag(111) tamponu üzerine sentezledik [25]. h-BN filmleri üretim sırasında yansımalı yüksek enerjili elektron kırınımı tekniği ile üretimden sonra attenue toplam yansıma (ATR), Fotoelektron Spektroskopisi, Enerji Dağılımı Spektroskopisi ve taramalı elektron Mikroskopu teknikleri ile karakterize edilmiştir. 2. Deneysel Şekil 1’de gösterilen deneysel üretim odası bir turbomoleküler pompaya ve bir iyon pompasına monte edimiştir. Oda basıncı biriktirme sırasında 2x10-9 Torr’dan daha düşüktür. Alttaş yüzey sıcaklığı bir optik piromtre kullanarak IR geçirgen gözlemleme camından ölçüldü. Bir adet uzaktan kumandalı elektron tabancası ve fosfor ekran içeren Staib Instruments RH15 RHEED sistemi örneğin yüzeyine paralel olacak şekilde yerleştirildi. 15.2 keV demet enerjisi ve 0.2 mikro Amper akıma sahip RHEED deseni toplandı. Elektron demeti enerjisi yaklaşık olarak 300 mikrometre ve geliş açısı 2º civarındaydı. Şekil 1. DLB (PLD) sisteminin şematik çizimi Excel Instruments markalı uzaktan kumandalı çok hedefli bir karosel 6 adet ablasyon hedefini çok katlılarınn ve süperörgülerin üretimi sırasında tutmak için kullanıldı. Ablasyon bir Continuum Surelite III-10 YAG lazer (1064 nm, 850mJ) ile yapıldı ve ayrıca bu lazerin 266nm, 100mJ/pulse, 5 ns genişliğinde darbeleri üretmek için kullanılan ikinci ve dördüncü harmonik üreticileri vardır. Lazer 10 Hz’e kadar çalışır ve 9 mm çapında daire şeklindedir. Lazer darbeleri hedef yüzeye deney odacığının içinde UV mercekleri ile 45ºlik açı ile odaklanır. Kaplama sırasında akış 5-6 J/cm2 arasında tutulur. Bir Inficon (SQM 160) marka Quartz Kristal Mikrobalansı (QKM) kaplama hızını ölçmek için kullaınıldı. Her kaplamadan önce, QKM sensörü alttaşın konumuna yerleştirilir biriktirme hızı her film için kalibre edilir. Biriktirme hızının haftalar boyunca çalışma süresince değişmezliğinin 10%’dan daha düşük bir varianti vardır. Taramalı Elektron Mikroskopisi ve Enerji Dağılımı Spektroskopisi Phenom Pro X Desktop SEM ile 5kV enerjide 17nm yüzey görüntülemesi ve spectral analizi yapılmıştır. Fotoelektron spektroskopisi ölçümleri PHI 25-260AR marka iki geçişli silindirik ayna analizcisi ile 15eV geçiş enerjisi ile yapımıştır. Uyarılma enerjisi kaynağı monokromotik olmayan 1486.6 eV enerjili 0.85 eV FWHM’si olan Al Kα X-ışınıdır. Sistemin toplam çözünürlüğü 0.9eV’dir. ATR Thermo Nicolet Nexus 470 FT-IR kullanılarak yapılmıştır. 3. Sonuç ve Tartışma Piyasada bulunan tek kristal SrTiO3(001) alttaşları 40 nm tampon Ag(111) tabakaları ve h-BN filmi için platform olarak kullanılmıştır. SrTiO3 (001) alttaşları deney odacığı içinde IR lazer ile yaklaşık 400ºC ısıtılarak temizlendi. Şekil 2. Tampon Ag(111) tabakaları 150ºC dakikada 2 nm biriktirme hızı ile üretildi. Ag(111)/SrTiO3(001) RHEED deseni Şekil 2(b)’de gösterilmiştir ve burada ince ayarlanmış ve eğrileşmiş çubuklar görünmektedir. Bu desen [211] ve [101] azimutlar yüzünden ortaya çıkan çubuk gruplarını gösterir. Burada bu çubuklar Ag(111)’ın altıgen örgüsünü açıklar ve Ag(111) normal kristallerinin gelişigüzel dağılımını kanıtlar. Örneğin yüzey gölgesinden uzaktaki çubuklarının eğriliği aslında Ewald küresinin yönelimli örgü silindirleri ile kesişiminin sonucudur. Boron Nitrat filmleri 200ºC’de dakikada 0.7 nm kaplama hızıyla fiber yönelimli Ag(111) )/SrTiO3(001) üzerinde üretildi. Şekil 2(c) 10 katlı 33.3Å kalınlıklı BN filminin RHEED desenini gösterir. Burada h-BN’ın [100] ve [102] ringleri gösterilmiştir. Aynı zamanda Ag(111)/SrTiO3(001)’ın yansıma noktası da görülmektedir. Source text - English 1.1 Context and co-text Words do not occur in isolation. The words of a text are surrounded by their linguistic environment, called co-text; the text takes place in a broader environment, called context. Both co-text and context are of utmost importance in the identification of the meaning of a text. For example, the word order in the following sentence takes its meaning from its co-text, that is to say from the words that follow and precede: Your order will be processed within 3/4 days after your request is submitted Items such as processed, request, and submitted contribute to the meaning of order that, in this case, refers to a request for a product to be delivered to you. Furthermore, the linguistic co-text of order allows us to understand what is going on, that is to say it helps us make inferences on the broader event where the sentence takes place. It can be clearly understood that this sentence has been uttered or written within an event whose topic is a commercial transaction, and where the participants are the customer and the seller. Furthermore, the role language is playing in this speech event can be analysed in terms of medium which, in this case, is written (probably an e-mail or a letter) and in terms of rhetorical function which is descriptive. The topic, the participants and the medium of an event constitute what has been called by Halliday (1985a) context of situation (see section 1.2.3). A different linguistic co-text of order would suggest a different context of situation as in the following example: Excuse me, can we order, please? Excuse me, can and please suggest that the linguistic event is probably taking place in a restaurant where some customers (the participants) are ordering their meal (the topic) to the waiter (the participant). In this case the medium is spoken. However, there are also cases where the context helps us disambiguate the meaning of a sentence. The sentence She is a baby may refer either to a baby or to an adult who looks or acts as a baby. The two contexts and co-texts will help us understand the meaning of the following sentences: 1. Introduce your child to books when she is a baby 2. She shouldn’t have a baby because she is a baby herself Context and co-text play a key role in the analysis of meaning as we will see later. However, before moving to a more practical description of these two concepts, the following section will provide a brief overview of some traditional theories of context. 1.2 A theoretical overview A theory of context was first developed by the anthropologist Bronislaw Malinowski (1923; 1935). The influence of Malinowski is visible in the theories of many scholars, particularly in those of J.R. Firth, one of his colleagues at London University and of Halliday who follows both Malinowski’s and Firth’s ideas in the development of his theory on the context of situation. 1.2.1 Malinowski and the theory of context Bronislaw Malinowski carried out an ethnographic field work in the Tobriand Islands (see Halliday 1985a:5ff). The inhabitants of those islands lived by fishing and gardening and spoke the Kiriwininan language. The first problem he had to face was how to translate the texts in Kiriwinian he had taken down in discussion with the Tobrianders, in order to make them accessible to the British culture. These texts were the product of a culture which was extremely different from the Western culture, for this reason a free translation would have not helped Western people to understand them. He argues (1923:301-2) Instead of translating, of inserting simply an English word for a native one, we are faced by a long and not altogether simple process of describing wide fields of custom, of special psychology and of tribal organisation which correspond to one term or another. We see that linguistic analysis inevitably leads us into the study of all subjects covered by Ethnographic field-work. For this reason, he decided to add an extended commentary to the translated text, which “placed the text in its living environment” (Halliday, 1985a:6). Malinowski coined a new term (1923) which identifies the total environment, including the verbal environment and the situation in which the text was produced: the context of situation. As Halliday points out (1985a: 6) Malinowski (…) understood that a text written by these people into this language could not be understood by any foreigners or by people living outside this society even if translated into their own languages because each message brought more meanings than those expressed through the words, meanings that could only be understood if accompanied by the situation. Thus, Malinowski introduced the notion of context of situation, meaning by this the environment of the text. In his ethnographic treatise Argonauts of the Western Pacific, Malinowski identifies three main aspects of social life that he believed the ethnographer must fit together into a unified description of a given society (1922:22; see also Langendoen, 1968:12-13): . . . in every act of tribal life, there is, first, the routine prescribed by custom and tradition, then there is the manner in which it is carried out, and lastly there is the commentary to it, contained in the natives’ mind. The strict relationship between language and culture is well explained by Malinowski in ‘The problem of meaning in primitive languages’ (1923), where he argues that language can be explained only by considering the broader context of situation: Language is essentially rooted in the reality of the culture, the tribal life and customs of the people, and […] it cannot be explained without constant reference to these broader contexts of verbal utterance. […] An utterance becomes intelligible when it is placed within its context of situation. In order to illustrate the notion of context of situation, Malinowski described a typical Tobriand fishing expedition: after the islanders had gone outside the lagoon into the open sea to fish, they had to navigate a difficult course through the reefs to get back to the lagoon. For this reason, people on the shore shouted instructions to the fishermen and the whole situation became a sort of competition between the different canoes and groups of people. The language used in such situations was full of technical terms, references to surroundings and indications of change, based on types of behaviour well-known to the participants. The linguistic material used was, therefore, inextricably dependent upon the course of the activity in which the utterances were embedded (1923:311-312). It was language in action (see Halliday 1985a: 6) and the message was clear only to those who knew what was going on. For this reason when he accounted for these situations he realised that it was necessary to provide not only a description of what was happening, the situation, but also of the total cultural background, because: involved in any kind of linguistic interaction, in any kind of conversational exchange, were not only the immediate sights and sounds surrounding the event but also the whole cultural history behind the participants, and behind the kind of practices they were engaging in, determining their significance for the culture, whether practical or ritual. All these played a part in the interpretation of meaning. (Halliday, 1985a:6) Here, Halliday refers to the notion of the context of culture, which together with the context of situation is necessary for the understanding of the text. Furthermore, Malinowski (ibidem) stresses the importance of the function of words, arguing that their meaning is not given by the physical properties of their referents but by the way they are used in a given situation. Langendoen (1964:22) who has provided a critical analysis of Malinowski’s works puts it this way Malinowski had an important insight into the nature of the meaning of particular words, namely, that their meaning is not given by the physical properties of their referents but rather by their function. He insisted that all words are functionally defined, and not only all words but all possible utterances in a language, and further that the meanings are so learned only by active experience and never by explanation or paraphrase. Malinowski also accounted for another use of language which was different from the pragmatic one: the narrative use. The islanders used to gather around and to tell stories. In this case there are two contexts of situation: the situation of the moment of narration and the situation created by the stories themselves. Langendoen (1964:23) claims that the meaning of narrative has nothing to do with the context of situation of the moment of narration. On the other hand, what Malinowski wanted to show is that these narrative texts were somehow related to the situation in which they were told. For example, stories about great famines in the past and how people reacted all together to overcome it, were told during that part of the year when food was hardly available. So, the context of situation of the moment of narration was somewhat relevant because of a direct relation between the narrative and the immediate surrounding (Malinowski, 1923:313). 1.2.2 Firth and the context of situation The influence of Malinowski’s view about the context of situation is also visible in the work of J.R. Firth. He adopted Malinowski’s notion but in his linguistic theory the context of situation was the whole cultural setting in which the speech act was embedded, more than the context of human activity concurrent with, immediately preceding, and following the speech act (Langendoen, 1964:35). In Firth’s view (1957d:182) the context of situation is best used as a suitable schematic construct to apply to language events and is a group of related categories at a different level from grammatical categories but rather of the same abstract nature. The categories brought into relation by the context of situation are (ibidem): A. The relevant features of participants: persons, personalities. (i) The verbal action of the participants. (ii) The non-verbal action of the participants. B. The relevant objects. C. The effect of the verbal action. Firth’s taxonomy has then to be applied to language events and in this way contexts of situation and types of language function can be grouped and classified. The following text taken from Dan Brown’s Digital Fortress (1998) can be analysed according to Firth’s taxonomy: Susan’s Volvo sedan rolled to a stop in the shadow of the ten-foot-high, barbed Cyclone fence. A young guard placed his hand on the roof. ‘ID, please,’ Susan obliged and settled in for the usual half-minute wait. The officer ran her card through a computerized scanner. Finally he looked up. ‘Thank you, Ms Fletcher.’ He gave an imperceptible sign, and the gate swung open. Half a mile ahead Susan repeated the entire procedure at an equally imposing electrified fence. Come on, guys … I’ve only been through here a million times. As she approached the final checkpoint, a stocky sentry with two attack dogs and a machine gun glanced down at her license plate and waved her through. She followed Canine Road for another 250 yards and pulled into Employee Lot C. Unbelievable, she thought. Twenty-six thousand employees and a twelve-billiondollar budget; you’d think they could make it through the weekend without me. Susan gunned the car into her reserved spot and killed the engine. The relevant features of participants (persons, personalities): 1. Susan Fletcher, NSA (National Security Agency) head cryptographer 2. Young guard 3. Stocky sentry (i) The verbal action of the participants: ‘ID, please’ … Thank you, Ms Fletcher … (ii) The non-verbal action of the participants: Susan’s Volvo sedan rolled to a stop … A young guard placed his hand on the roof … He gave an imperceptible sign … a stocky sentry with two attack dogs and a machine gun glanced down at her license plate and waved her through … The relevant objects: ten-foot-high, barbed Cyclone fence … her card … equally imposing electrified fence … final checkpoint … machine gun The effect of the verbal action: Susan obliged and settled in … According to Firth’s theories, the meaning of what is going on is clear when all these features are analysed and considered together. The importance of the context of situation in the identification of meaning is linked to another Firthian tenet, that is to say ‘the notions of personality and language’(1957a:183) which are considered by Firth as vectors of the continuity of repetitions in the social process (ibid.). Firth stresses the importance of studying individuals, and not speaking masses2, in their bundles of roles and personae. He says (1957a:184) There is the element of habit, custom, tradition, the element of the past, and the element of innovation, of the moment, in which the future is being born. When you speak you fuse these elements in verbal creation, the outcome of your language and of your personality. What Firth strongly believes in is that any social person in the multiplicity of roles he/she takes in his/her life and in the multiplicity of contexts of situation he/she finds him/herself in, is not free to say what s/he wants. We behave systematically “since experienced language is universally systemic” (1957a:187). This reinforces the relevance of the context in the identification of the meaning of an utterance: since the linguistic events and the roles we perform in given situations influence the language we use, each utterance has to be considered in the context in which it is produced. An example of how we change our language according to the role we are performing is provided below. Let us suppose we realize that the overcrowded room we are in would need some fresh air. A friend of us is close to the window. We may verbalize our feeling this way: - It’s so hot in here! Open the window, please. However, if we suppose we are in a public place (school, university, office, ...) and we want to ask for permission to someone we do not know our request would sound as follows: - Excuse me, would it be possible to open the window, please? The room would need some fresh air. 2 He dismisses the Saussurean dichotomies of langue and parole. Similarly, if tomorrow we have to do an exam, we will probably tell a friend Domani devo fare un esame but to our teacher we would probably say Professoressa, domani dovrei sostenere un esame. The two phrases fare un esame/sostenere un esame have two different degrees of formality and are used in different contexts of situation. Furthermore, the use of the conditional form for the verb sostenere reinforces the formality of the sentence. These examples show the strong relationship between the language we use and the role we perform in context. The same difference can also be identified in English where to do an exam, to take an exam, and to sit an exam have different levels of formality and, as a consequence, clearly reflect the statuses and roles of the people participating in the verbal action. This view of language also has important implications in the study of language: if language is systemic, that is to say if a specific situation attracts a range of words and phrases we are very likely to use, the linguist may identify scientifically the features of the repeated linguistic events and classify them (see chapter 3). 1.2.3 Halliday and the context of situation As previously mentioned, Halliday (1985a) takes up both Malinowski’s and Firth’s ideas. In order to describe the importance of the context of situation in communication, he makes us think about the way in which we communicate. He says (1985a:9) What is remarkable is how often people do understand each other despite the noise with which we are continually surrounded. How do we explain the success with which people communicate? The short answer, I shall suggest, is that we know what the other person is going to say. We may be partly surprised; but the surprise will always be within the framework of something that we knew was going to happen. Successful interactions are possible because we make predictions based on the context of situation. It provides a lot of information about the meanings that are being exchanged and that are likely to be exchanged. This perspective also influences the definition of text, being for Halliday (1985a:10) “any instance of living language that is playing some part in a context of situation”. For this reason a text is a product, an output, and a process, “a movement through the network of meaning potential” (ibid.). Halliday (1985a: 11ff) provides a taxonomy through which it is possible to define the context of situation of a text. He puts it this way The text, we have said, is an instance of the process and product of social meaning in a particular context of situation. Now the context of situation, the context in which the text unfolds, is encapsulated in the text, not in a kind of piecemeal fashion, not at the other extreme in any mechanical way, but through a systematic relationship between the social environment on the one hand, and the functional organisation of language on the other. In order to show the systematic relationship existing between language and the social environment he provides his own taxonomy of the context of situation, adapted below (1985a:12): 1. the field of discourse, that is to say what is going on, the nature of the social action; 2. the tenor of discourse, which refers to the participants, their statuses and roles, their permanent and temporary relationships; 3. the mode of discourse, that is to say the role language is playing, the symbolic organisation of the text, its status, its function in the context, the channel and the rhetorical mode. Halliday (ibidem) argues that such an analysis of the context allows us to represent the system that lies behind the unconscious process of producing and understanding texts in a context of situation. The notion of context of situation is also strictly linked to the concept of register. It means that the features of the context of situation somehow constrain the lexis and the expressions that can be used. In order to understand better the kind of restraints operated by the situation, we can consider the definition of register provided by Halliday (1985a:39): A register is a semantic concept. It can be defined as a configuration of meanings that are typically associated with a particular situational configuration of field, mode and tenor. But since it is a configuration of meanings, a register must also, of course, include the expressions, the lexico-grammatical and phonological features, that typically accompany or REALISE these meanings. The identification of the three variables of the context of situation indicated by Halliday (see above) has different implications in language use and consequently, in register. The variable of the field of discourse, which refers to the topic of the language event, operates a constraint on the lexis and expressions available for use. Ulrych (1992:85) provides the examples of absolve and acquit. Both mean assolvere in Italian. However, the first of these two verbs belongs to the set of lexis and expressions of a religious register and is likely to occur with words such as confessional, priest, go in peace, let us pray. Conversely, acquit is used in the legal register and will co-occur with items such as charge, court, I rest my case. The word depression may co-occur with different items and may have different meanings depending on the register in which it is included. In the language of medicine it co-occurs with suffer from whereas in the language of economics it is included in expressions such as periods of economic depression, and in the language of meteorology it is by weather. The variable of the tenor of discourse, referring to the participants, constrains the degree of formality of a language event. Levels of formality can be formal, neutral, and informal (Ulrych, 1992:87). As already said above with the example of to do an exam and to sit an exam, formality depends on the statuses of the participants. May I borrow your pen and give me your pen clearly exemplify a different relationship between the participants of the two language events. The first example has a more formal style and presupposes that the participants do not know each other (or do not know each other well). In the second example, the use of the imperative form and the absence of expressions such as please reveals the high degree of familiarity between the interlocutors. 15 in sonu The variable of the mode of discourse refers to the medium (written, spoken, ...) and the channel (e-mail, article, essay, …) chosen for the language used. The constraints operated on language by this variable include the differences between spoken and written language and the format that different genres should have. In English, contractions should not be used in written texts and a newspaper article does not include the expression dear readers which, conversely, may represent the opening of a letter or of an e-mail. 1.3 Context of situation: some practical examples In the first section of this chapter, the importance of both context of situation and co-text as a source of meaning have already been described and exemplified. In this section, further examples will be provided in order to show that the identification of the context of culture is at the basis of the comprehension of a text. Two texts will also be analysed according to the three variables of the context of situation, that is to say field, tenor, and mode	Translation - Turkish 1. Bu sebeple, sahildeki insanlar balıkçılara talimatları bağırarak söylüyorlardı ve genel durum farklı kanolar ve insanlar arasındaki bir tür yarışma halini almıştı. Bu durumlarda kullanılan dil teknik terimlerle doluydu ve bunlar etraftaki yer şekilleri ve katılımcılar tarafından iyi bilinen hareket tarzlarını temel alan hareket işaretleriydi. Anlamları göndergelerinin fiziksel özellikleri ile verilmediğini, bir durum içinde kullanılarak verildiğini iddia etmiştir. Langenden (1964:22) Malinowski’nin işlerinin incelemeli bir analizini yapmış, başka bir deyişle: “Malinowski belirli kelimelerin anlamının doğasına ilişkin önemli bilgiler vermiş, yani onların anlamlarını göndergelerinin fiziksel özellikleri ile değil işlevleri ile açıklamıştır. Bütün kelimeler işlevleri ile tanımlanır ve hatta sadece bütün kelimeler değil, bir dildeki bütün ifadele işlevleri ile tanımlanır. Bunun da ötesinde anlamlar aktif tecrübe ile öğrenilirler, asla açıklama veya yorumlama ile öğrenilmezler.” Malinowski ayrıca dilin faydacı olan kullanımından başka bir kullanımını daha açıkladı: “Anlatıcı” kullanımı. Adalılar bir araya gelip hikayeler anlatırlardı. Bu durumda iki adet durum bağlamı vardı: Anlatım zamanı durumu ve hikayeler tarafından yaratılan zaman. Langendon (1964:23) anlatıcının anlamının anlatım zamanı durum bağlamı ile alakası olmadığını iddia ediyor. Firth, Malinowski’nin kavramını benimsemiş ama ona göre, durum bağlamı teorisi, kültürel konuşma faaliyetinin yerleştirildiği kültürel ayarların tamamıydı. İnsani faaliyetlerin bağlamıyla konuşmanın öncesinde ve sonrasında uyuşuyordu. (Langendon, 1964:35). Firth’e (1957d:182) göre, durum bağlamı dil olaylarına uygulamak için inşa edilmiş uygun bir şema olarak en iyi şekilde kullanılır ve aynı soyut doğanın aksine dil bilgisi kategorilerinden farklı bir seviyede bir kategori grubudur. Firth’in sınıflandırması daha sonra dil olaylarına uygulanmıştır ve bu sayede durum bağlamları ve dil işlevi türleri gruplandırılabilir ve sınıflandırılabilir. Aşağıda Dan Brown’ın Digital Fortress (Dijital Kale ) (1998) kitabından alınan metin Firth’in sınıflandırması açısından analiz edilebilir. İlgili nesneler: üç metre yüksekliğindeki elektrikli tel örgü... Susan’ın kartı... aynı derecede heybetli elektrikli çit... Sözlü faaliyetin etkisi: Susan mecburen bekledi... Firth’in teorilerine göre, anlatılanlar en açık şekilde bütün bu özelliklerle birlikte dikkate alınıp analiz edildiği zaman anlaşılır. Anlamı belirlemede durum bağlamının önemi başka bir Firth doktrini ile ilişkilendirilmiştir: “Dil ve kişilik kavramları (1957a:183)” Bunlar Firth tarafından sosyal süreçte süregelen yineleme vektörleri olarak kabul edilirler (aynı eserde). Firth, kitlelerin 2 (2.dipnot: Saussure’ün dil ve söz ikilemlerini reddediyor) değil bireylerin rollerini ve kişiliklerini çalışmanın önemini vurgular. -----------------------------------------------------11. Ayrıca, sostenere fiili için şartlı durumun kullanımı cümledeki resmiyeti pekiştirir. Bu örnekler kullandığımız dil ve bağlamda oynadığımız rol arasındaki güçlü ilişkiyi gösterir. Aynı fark İngilizcede “sınav olmak”, “sınav almak” ve “sınava girmek” kelimeleriyle farklı seviyelerdeki resmiyet seviyelerini gösterir ve sonuç olarak sözlü faaliyete katılanların rollerini ve statülerini yansıtır. Dile olan bu bakış açısının dil çalışması içinde önemli sonuçları vardır. Eğer dil sistematik ise, başka bir deyişle özel durumlar çok kullandığımız söz dizileri veya deyimleri gerektiriyorsa, dilbilimci yinelenen dilsel olayların özelliklerini bilimsel bir şekilde belirler ve sınıflar (Bölüm 3). 1.2.3 Halliday ve durum bağlamı Daha önce bahsettiğimiz gibi, Halliday (1985a), Malinowski ve Firth’in fikirlerini sürdürmüştür. İletişimde durum bağlamının önemini tarif etmek için iletişim kurduğumuz yol hakkında düşünmemizi sağlar. Şöyle der (1985a:9): “Etrafımızdaki gürültüye rağmen insanların birbirlerini iyi anlamaları fevkaladedir. İletişim kuran insanların başarısını nasıl açıklarız? Kısa cevabım diğer kişinin ne söyleyeceğini biliyor olmamızdır. Şaşırmış olabiliriz ama şaşkınlık her zaman gerçekleşeceğini bildiğin şeylerin çerçevesinde olmuştur.” Başarılı etkileşimler mümkündür çünkü durum bağlamını temel alan tahminler yaparız. Değiş tokuş yapılan ve yapılacak olan anlamlar hakkında çok bilgi verirler. Bu bakış açısı ayrıca metnin tanımını etkiler. Başka bir deyişle: Metin, belirli bir durum bağlamı içinde sosyal anlamın sürecinin ve ürününün bir örneğidir. Şimdi bağlamı içinde barındıran durum bağlamı, metnin içinde barındırılır. Durum bağlamı, parça parça veya tam tersi olan mekanik bir şekilde değil, bir taraftaki sosyal çevre ile diğer taraftaki dilin işlevsel organizasyonu arasındaki sistematik bağlantı üzerinden barındırılır. Dil ve sosyal çevre arasında var olan sistemli ilişkiyi göstermek için aşağıda uyarlanmış olan durum bağlamı sınıflandırması verilmiştir (1985a12). 1. Söylem alanı, diğer bir deyişle yaşananlar, sosyal faaliyetlerin doğasıdır. 2. Söylem biçemi, katılımcıları, statülerini ve rollerini, kalıcı ve geçici ilişkilerini belirtir. 3. Söylem kipi, dilin oynadığı roldür, metnin sembolik organizasyonu, statüsü, bağlamdaki işlevi, kanal ve söz sanatı kipidir. Halliday (aynı eserde) bağlamın böyle bir analizinin durum bağlamındaki metinleri üretme ve anlama bilinçaltı sürecinin altında yatan sistemi göstermemize yardım edeceğini iddia ediyor. Durum bağlamı kavramı ayrıca kesit (özel değişge) kavramı ile ilişkilidir. Yani durum bağlamının özellikleri bir şekilde kullanılabilecek sözcük düzlemi ve ifadeleri sınırlar. Durum tarafından uygulanan sınırlamaların türünü daha iyi anlayabilmek için, Halliday (1985a:39) tarafından geliştirilmiş kesit tanımını ele alabiliriz. -----------------------------------------------------14. Ulrych (1992:85) absolve and acquit (bağışlamak, aklamak) örneklerini verir. İkisi de İtalyancada assolvere (yerine getirmek) anlamına gelir. Yine de bu ilk iki kelime dinsel bir kesitin sözcük düzlemi ve ifadeler kümesine aittir ve muhtemelen “günah çıkartma hücresi, rahip, esenlikle git, hadi dua edelim” kelimeleriyle birlikte kullanılır. Diğer taraftan “acquit (aklamak)” yasal kesitte kullanılır ve “suçlamak, dava, söyleyeceklerim bu kadar” kelimeleriyle birlikte kullanılırlar. “Depresyon” kelimesi farklı kelimelerle birlikte kullanılabilir ve içinde bulunduğu kesite göre farklı anlamlara sahip olabilir. Tıp dilinde “muzdarip olmak” ile birlikte kullanılırken ekonomi dilinde “ekonomik durgunluk periyodu” ifadelerine dahil olur ve meteoroloji dilinde hava ile nitelendirilir. Söylem biçemi değişkeni, katılımcıları işaret eder ve dil olayının resmiyet derecesini sınırlar. Resmiyet derecesi resmi, nötr ve gayrı resmi olabilir (Ulrych 1992:87). Daha önce “sınav olmak, sınava girmek” örnekleriyle ifade ettiğimiz gibi resmiyet, katılımcıların statülerine bağlıdır. “Kalemini ödünç alabilir miyim” ve “bana kalemini ver” cümleleri iki dil olayının katılımcıları arasındaki farklı bir ilişkiyi açıkça örnekler. İlk örnek daha resmi bir tarza sahiptir ve katılımcıların birbirini tanımadığını (veya çok iyi tanıdığını) gösterir. İkinci örnekte emir kipinin kullanımı ve “lütfen” gibi ifadelerin yokluğu muhataplar arasındaki tanışıklık derecesini açığa çıkarır. -----------------------------------------------------15.
