Adventist Health System is a not-for-profit healthcare organization that emphasizes Christ at the center of care. Founded in 1973 to support and strengthen Seventh-day Adventist healthcare organizations in the Southern and Southwestern regions of the United States, Adventist Health System has grown to become the largest not-for-profit Protestant healthcare provider in the nation.
Today, Adventist Health System supports 44 hospitals and employs 55,000 individuals. Adventist Health System hospitals are comprised of 7,700 plus licensed beds, providing care for 4 million patients each year in inpatient, outpatient and emergency room visits.
In order to best meet the needs of the local communities we serve, Adventist Health System facilities operate independently in hiring employees and delivering care and services. While each entity is unique, they remain united in one mission—to extend the healing ministry of Christ to every patient. Our mission depends not only on our commitment to Christian ideals but on our efforts to provide nothing less than extraordinary compassionate care.
Adventist Health System’s flagship, Florida Hospital, is one of the largest healthcare providers in America and a national leader in cardiac care. Established in 1908, Florida Hospital now includes almost 2,200 beds on seven campuses.

Florida Hospital Cardiovascular Institute
Our comprehensive approach to healthcare offers patients unparalleled care in the region. In fact, the Florida Hospital Cardiovascular Institute has consistently been named one of the nation’s leaders in the fight against heart disease.
Each year our team of cardiac experts sees more than 70,000 patients, including 2,000 who must undergo some form of cardiac surgery. Since 1981, the institute has performed more than 82,000 open-heart procedures.
Our 135 board-certified cardiologists and cardiovascular surgeons are supported by more than 1,000 highly skilled cardiac and critical care nurses, cardiovascular technicians, physical therapists, and cardiac rehab and nutrition specialists. Every stage of your treatment is closely coordinated by the Cardiovascular Institute and your primary physician, from the early detection of diseases to treatment and post-operative rehabilitation.
To advance treatments, the Florida Hospital Cardiovascular Institute participates in nationally and internationally recognized cardiac research studies. This allows our patients to access techniques, technologies and procedures that others may not have access to for months, even years.
One of the leading centers of excellence in the nation when it comes to cardiac and cardiovascular health issues, the Florida Hospital Cardiovascular Institute is one of the busiest cardiovascular centers in the United States.
The institute is:
1 in Cardiology Volume
4 in Open Heart Surgery Volume
1 in Vascular Surgery Volume
2 in Thoracic Volume Surgery
Data based on MedPar data from 2006
The institute’s new 15-story Ginsburg Tower is designed to create a total healing atmosphere that reduces stress, rejuvenates the spirit and promotes a speedy recovery.
The facility, which features views of Lake Estelle, is light and airy with lots of open space. Nearly two years in the making, the tower’s design offers patients comfortable, private rooms that are focused entirely on the needs of the patient, their family and the caregiver.
The institute’s facilities include:
80,000 square feet dedicated to cardiovascular services
15 hybrid procedure suites
9 cardiovascular and thoracic surgery suites
84 cardiac intensive care unit beds
12 chest pain observation unit beds
59 heart cath recover beds
7 Echo study rooms
6 stress test labs
Supported by a team of more than 1,000 specially trained nurses and technicians, our 135 board certified cardiologists and cardiovascular surgeons offer patients the best care in the region, if not the entire country.
Saving Lives Through Early Detection and Intervention
Each year, the Florida Hospital Cardiovascular Institute handles more than 70,000 cardiac-related visits. The institute’s team of world-class caregivers performs nearly 2,000 cardiac surgeries a year, from the fairly routine to the extremely complex.
These procedures include valve repair and replacement, heart remodeling, transplants and MAZE, which is surgical/cath procedures used to treat atrial fibrillation. The Florida Hospital Cardiovascular Institute has a reputation for excellence in cardiac issues, not only in terms of surgery, but in performing clinical trials that bring the latest treatments and technologies to the forefront of cardiac care.
Our team of 135 board certified cardiologists and cardiovascular surgeons is backed by a support staff of more than 1,000 dedicated cardiac and critical care nurses, cardiovascular technicians, cardiac rehab specialists, physical therapists and nutrition specialists. The Florida Hospital Cardiovascular Institute personnel carefully coordinate each stage of patient care, from diagnosis and treatment to post operative care and rehabilitation.
A leader in clinical research
To advance the treatment of cardiac issues, the Florida Hospital Cardiovascular Institute participates extensively in nationally and internationally recognized cardiac research studies.
At the forefront of new techniques, technologies and procedures, the institute’s studies allow patients to gain access to advanced therapies months, if not years, before they become available to the general public.
Our physicians also participate in “investigator-initiated” studies. These studies, which are initiated and directed by the Florida Hospital Cardiovascular Institute, challenge the status quo in the early detection, diagnosis and treatment of heart disease. Many of our physician’s studies are also published annually in peer-reviewed journals medical journals.

Adventist Healthcare
In 1903, at the suggestion of Ellen White, a group of leaders from the General Conference of Seventh-day Adventists went from Battle Creek, Michigan to Washington, DC in search of a new location for the denominational headquarters, a publishing house, a sanitarium, and a college. They found just what they were looking for in Takoma Park, Maryland. Ellen White contributed a part of the proceeds from the sale of the book "The Ministry of Healing" to help build the sanitarium, and Adventist HealthCare was born.
Today, Adventist HealthCare is a non-profit network of healthcare providers that includes hospitals, home health agencies, and other healthcare services.
Based in Rockville, Maryland, Adventist HealthCare employs more than 7,200 people and cares for more than 450,000 men, women and children in our community each year among our various entities and services. The primary service areas for Adventist HealthCare are the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area and northwestern New Jersey.

Washington Adventist Hospital is a 281-bed acute-care facility located in Takoma Park, Maryland. Opened in 1907, the hospital is Montgomery County’s first cardiac center, performing more than 500 open-heart surgeries and more than 6,000 heart catheterizations each year.
100 Years of Caring for the Community and Counting!
In 2007, Washington Adventist Hospital celebrated 100 years of providing care to the communities it serves. As the hospital did a hundred years ago, it continues to strive to remain ahead. For this reason, the hospital is in the process of building a new hospital for the next century. The vision of 21st century facilities is becoming a reality on a 48-acre parcel of land near White Oak, about six miles from our current location — in the heart of the hospital’s primary service area. The new hospital, along with services retained in Takoma Park, will strengthen health care in our region and expand access to health care for the communities it serves in Montgomery and Prince George’s counties and our surrounding areas.
Leading Edge, State-of-the-Art Procedures
The Cardio Vascular Institute at Washington Adventist Hospital has provided the Washington Metropolitan Area with leading edge, state-of-the art procedures with skill, compassion and experience for the past 25 years. The hospital was the first in the D.C. area to perform numerous cardiac procedures, including mitral valvuloplasty, and a number of sophisticated echocardiography.
The institute was also the first in the mid-Atlantic region to begin performing a revolutionary type of surgery that can correct atrial fibrillation (AF), a common form of heart rhythm abnormality and a major cause of stroke. The procedure, called The Mini-Maze, offers new hope to AF patients for whom no cure now exists.
