Discussion

Maureen Wilkins (X) Sep 29, 2009:
data cleansing I think that it refers to ensuring that the initial data in a database is consistent, no duplicates etc. Have done a lot of this type of work in my previous IT profession - see alsohttp://www.free-press-release.com/news/200612/1166520523.htm...
Fiona McBrearty (asker) Sep 29, 2009:
I have no more context (except that this is a framework agreement for IT service providers). Only other mention made in the doc is the following:
Migration/Reprise des Données Initiales
Opération de traitement permettant la récupération dans le SI XXXX de la partie des Données Initiales préalablement retraitée lors du Toilettage desdites Données
LAB2004 Sep 29, 2009:
..preparation of data? Without further context it's a little hard to say.

agree lydiar : I'd prefer this to cleaning.

agree Simon Mountifield : Data cleansing or scrubbing, a key part of DB management. Quoting from MIS by Laudon & Laudon: "...consists of activities for detecting and correcting data in a database that are incorrect, incomplete, improperly formatted or redundant".

cleaning / simplifying

toilettage is often used to describe reduction of complexity or cleaning
Example sentence:

Le toilettage des niches fiscales

Note from asker:
granddictionnaire.com suggests "sanitizing" but don't know if this is appropriate here, or indeed the same thing
Peer comment(s):

agree Jean-Louis S. : data cleaning

neutral lydiar : Not sure the simplifying is appropriate - cleaning definitely fine.

These two websites confirm that cleaning/tidying up is what is meant here (The Flemish version uses 'opkuisen', which definitely means to tidy up/clean up the data)
Peer comment(s):

agree Travelin Ann : sounds right for US English
