My pc works under WindowsXP SP2. And it works just fine. The scanner functions, because the necessary drivers are present, voice-recognition works and the CAT-tool works.
For half of these applications there are no drivers for Win.Vista.
So, why bother to buy Windows Vista, when I have a perfectly stable OS of which I know the nuts and bolts? Reinstalling everything and look for drivers would take a lot of time.

I bought a new PC, it came installed with Windows Vista.
And I agree, if you have a system that's working just fine, there's no need to buy Vista. I don't see any advantages, and the disadvantages you mention are definitely bothering me.

Every enterprise needs new products, so that people have to spend money on them. It's the same with Trados etc., if we wouldn't upgrade every year they would have to cut costs dramatically.
I didn't buy XP, when it was still new, but got win2000 in 2003. Last year I got my first xp-machine. If I had to buy a new system I would insist on installing XP.

walking into a shop and asking for a computer with XP? They don't sell them anymore. I've just got a powerful second-hand PC with XP to use as a back-up, but I was told the only other way is to get it purpose-built.

I just got a new laptop and Windows Vista is what it came with along with the latest version of MSWord.
I hate the learning curve, it's traumatic every time I have to get a new computer. But there is no choice, I have to upgrade. There is also so much more I can do now.
For instance, I found a free high-speed WiFi connection right here at home, a lot better than what I had, plus I find them on the road.

Due to demand, Dell will sell systems with XP.

My new laptop came with it. I still have an older laptop with Xp and have no special preference as to which one I like to use.

Vista has been nothing but trouble to a lot of co-workers and business associates that have obtained new machines in the last few months.
A brand new Toshiba laptop, dual core, with 1 gig of ram and supposedly Vista ready laptop, it has been nothing but very slow and problematic --the fix – take the laptop back to the store and exchange it with one with Windows XP – or remove vista and install windows XP.

Vista has been nothing but trouble to a lot of co-workers and business associates that have obtained new machines in the last few months.

Vista is very resource intensive (it consumes large amounts of Disk space, Memory, processing, and hardware) and you really do not get nothing for the trouble.
You get a polished GUI that it is not ground breaking and it just make windows LOOK more like a MAC.
I do not see ourselves upgrading to Vista at all, we will keep our current OS until something else comes along or until all the tools and software we use upgrade their current packages to vista compatible and we do not have to pay another bundle of money for them – Which most likely will never happen!
Don’t bother really – if everything is working, there is no reason to change anything, specially to the head ache that Vista is.
Besides, what is the BREAKTHROUGH that makes vista so muhc worth and better than your current setup?
I am yet to see or discover the "I have got to have it" factor in vista to make me get rid of my current setup. ▲ Collapse

You get a great and stable OS and even if you dont (like me, sigh) use it on a regular basis, you can use BootCamp/VMware/Parallels to install your old (old?) XP on it and say "Hasta la vista, baby".

My comment is a bit out of the topic, but I bought a new PC a while ago with Windows Media Player and an upgrade to Windows Vista.
I went to the website, wanted to pay for the sending of it, my credit card wasn't accepted (and it's not a credit card topic), asked to pay by wireless transfer and I am still waiting for their e-mail with details to send the data for the wire transfer.
Has anyone experienced the same?

We are summer 2009. New sales cry of M$ and buy Windows Vienna at least if M$ releases the next version on time.
Googling what Wikipedia says about Windows Vienna is an incitation to make me buy Vista.
Another interface, no more NTFS-technology (New Technology File System), no compatible drivers for Vienna and here we go again with the paches or next version of Sdlx, Nuance et.al. Better to save for 2009 now.

Dragon: Nuance is offering a free upgrade from DNS 9 to DNS 9.5 for Vista, which I downloaded and installed, and it works like a charm. (I never even installed version 9 on the new computer, just had to use the serial number to install 9.5).
Trados: I have SDL Trados 2006 and it works perfectly fine.
Translation Office 3000: I transfered my database and installed the program on the new computer, and it works without a glitch.
I have several other programs and they all worked fine. There's one I use for greeting cards, etc., and I remember having trouble getting it to run in Windows XP when XP first came out, but in Vista, it ran smoothly from the get go.
The computer also immediately recognized my printer (6 years old), my scanner and my camera, and even an external hard disk for which I lost the CD with the driver a long time ago.
I haven't had to use it, but Vista offers an option to run your programs with XP compatibility. I remember when XP came out, it also had an option to run programs under Windows 98 compatibility, and that took care of the problem for programs that wouldn't run under XP.
All in all I invested about 5 hours to transfer all my files and programs to my new computer and haven't had any issues so far.
Let me just say for the record that I didn't buy one, but two computers with Windows Vista: a desktop and a laptop. The desktop has 4 GB of RAM, so performance is not an issue there. The laptop has 1 GB of RAM and it also works fine, although I can't say that I have seen a great improvement there when compared to my old XP laptop with 512 MB of RAM. I found several articles on the web that talked about how to optimize Vista, and after following some of the suggestions, I did see a performance boost on my laptop.
So, in my experience, Vista has not been a problem, although I must confess that I was worried after reading some of the posts on ProZ. I thought my software wouldn't run!
