Studying Translation in Uzbekistan Jul 25, 2007

Well, to answer your question, dear Soledad, I guess the students who want to study translation will not find a better place than Tashkent State University o World Languages.

So, this is the place the best for translators and interpreters.

Said

Uzbekistan.

In Spain, the translation college at UAB university is reputed to be the best, but I've been through it, and it's not that hot.

I hear that the one at UAM in Madrid is way better.

I think, however, that the one place world-wide to become a translator or an interpreter is ESIT in Paris.

As far as Italy is concerned, SSLMIT in Forlì (where I am!) and in Trieste are definitely the best places!

Maybe you would like to check on your university's entry and provide more information about it. It would be great to have name, geographical location, information on credentials, contact person names, and self-description of as many translation schools around the world as possible.

If your university is not listed yet please write down the info in this thread and I'll include it.

It would be nice to have a complete database that we could all benefit from... and in good time you'll see that fantastic things will come out of this. Promise.

See you!

ESIT or ETI Sep 16, 2007

Hello everyone,

It is said that the best places where to become a translator or an interpreter are these two schools: École Supérieure d'Interprètes et de Traducteurs (ESIT) in Paris and ETI (École de Traduction et d'Interprétation) in Geneva.

Cheers,

I would like to ask another question, though: do you think it is essential to have studied Translation/Interpreting to become a decent translator/interpreter?

Hi Horchat, and welcome in our community !
To answer your question : it depends. Of course, the best highly technical medical translator would be a formal doctor, for example. He has the knowledge of the subject, no terminlogy problems, and he perfectly knows what he's talking about. Yet he doesn't always have what it "takes" to translate, like methods, technics, knowledge of the source language and /or easiness to play with the target language.
On the other hand, a translator ith a translation background has the language "weapons" and all the language knowlegde and intercultural knowledge necessary, yet isn't specialised and needs to do it by reading, learning, asking questions, etc.

So, there are pros and cons everywhere, as you can see, and maybe your English is great, but don't forget that some students among us are still junior or freshman - guess when you were in your first year of Psychlogy studies, you didn't master the uge and complex field that's psychology... you learnt. A student - by essence - studies, he/she is still learning.
Don't judge too harsh

Anyway, nice metting you and a nice weekend to you !
CheerZ,
Anne

You don't need to be that famous, though, you should deliver the best quality of translations as it is possible. The University I'm talking about here - provides the greatest possibilities for young (freshmen) translators.

Big up for all Universities and people who teach you, keep up the good work, and don't let anyone to struck you down

Take care studs.

Speaking of Poland... Dec 12, 2007

Probably everyone thinks their mother school/university is the best in the country

I guess I'm no exception:

Nicolaus Copernicus University in Torun, Department of English (btw: could you add it to the list, please?)

Not only thorough education, but also loads of fun.

Cheers,
Andrzej
