I think Kathy said it best:
Translation is an art, a science, a craft and more. It's also the intuition to know when you need to shift into one of these modes rather than another.
To me, there's a constant interplay between intuition and its codification into the rules of science, craft, and art. I went back to graduate school to learn why I did the things I did as a translator, and I found that my intuition had been coming up with existing, established patterns.
