I dare anyone to beat this tale!
My landlord, when I was living in Xalapa, Mex., was one of those "stringer" faculty members at the University of Veracruz and edited a literary journal. He needed a rather long abstract of an article translated into English. He brought it to me, but mentioned shyly that he imagined that I charged US prices for my translations. Rather than put him on the spot about the price, I suggested that we do a trade: he'd get the water tank on our roof clea... See more I dare anyone to beat this tale!

Rather than put him on the spot about the price, I suggested that we do a trade: he'd get the water tank on our roof cleaned and I'd do the translation. That tank was so full of years of accumulated muck that it hardly delivered water to the building. He was delighted! The poor man looked so relieved that I'd been able to offer him a way out of his dilemma!
I did the translation, and he and his son went up on the roof with some brooms and buckets, and set about trying to clean the tank (I'd kind of thought he'd get his plumber friend to do the job). He got a good translation; the building got running mud instead of water. The mess wasn't fully settled in that tank for days, we were taking brown showers, and the poor dentist, who was the building's only other tenant, was going bananas. ▲ Collapse

Yes, plane tickets, hotel vouchers, even bonus miles and stuff like that will do, I shall certainly consider an offer like that. Never had an actual experience but did get a domestic round-trip employee voucher once for dutifully watching neighbour's cat over the period of 2 years - the neigbour happened to be flight attendant. In fact it was not a payment since I always brought her something from my overseas trips for watching mine, but a huge and pleasant surprise.

I've just done a rush translation of a 24-page menu for a posh local restaurant (the owner was expecting a group of overseas businessmen and needed the menu in English).
As my mouth watered while translating all the lovely and exotic dishes (crocodile & ostrich steaks, to mention two), I suggested payment in the form of one or two sumptious meals for two persons.
The owner was delighted, and I'm looking forward to a real treat (I hope).
