I have been asked by an agency to say what my hourly rate is for translating from Spanish and Italian into mother tongue English. I am based in the UK. I have only ever quoted an hourly rate for proof-reading. what would be an average rate to charge for actual translation for an agency based in Germany and the UK?

Take your current per-word rate and multiply it by your average per hour throughoutput.
E.g. for per-word rate of 0.08 EU and throughoutput of 500 words per hour your rate would be 40 EU.

If you have an hourly rate for proof-reading, why would your rate be different for translation? Even if a client is paying by the word, they are effectively paying for your time, after all. So if your per-word rate multiplied by your translation speed (words per hour) comes to a different amount than your proofing rate, you need to start re-thinking...

I don't know, but shouldn't your hourly rate for anything be the same? You can proofread more in an hour than you can translate in an hour, yes, but in both cases you have worked an hour, and there are only so many hours in a month.

These days I only translate, but I used to offer a variety of services. I charged more per hour for DTP and web site design than for translation, and more for custom database design and programming than for any of the other services.
Partly its a question of what the market will bear, but it was also a question of charging more for the tasks I liked least and in which the technology was changing the fastest.

First I agree with Steven Capsuto and I hold the same view.
I don't think we should, for example, use the same per-word rate to calculate hourly rate for different types of tasks. Language experts can provide many different services these days.
While it may be ok to use the same hourly rate for translating and proof-reading, the experise and skills required for the project along what the market can bear, as Steven said, should determine the hourly rate.

Would you, for example, charge your hourly rate based on the per-word rate for a completley different type of project in which you were asked to provide an expert opinion on language related matter where you have to use expertise and experience? I wouldn't. Recently I was asked to review a radio broadcasting transcript (about a page) for a tribunal hearing and to provide expert opinion to determine if the broadcaster had breached the broadcasting regulations by expressing certain views. Given the time it took me to complete, if I charged my hourly rate for transations, the fee for this service would be too low.
