I recently joined proz and had problems deciding on rates since I have only done freelance translations on a very ad lib basis (usually for friends etc). Hence I had no idea what rates to supply on this site. I am intending to translate full-time but need to know what other \"new\" translators are charging. Can you please help (even if it\'s \"just an idea\")? Thanks!

It\'s a time-honoured question to which, unfortunately, there are no hard and fast answers. The rates you should charge depend on your language combinations, experience, qualifications, the countries you intend working for, your specialisation, etc. There is no neat formula.

If you are just starting out, you might want to have a look at the ITI\'s website (www.iti.org.uk), which has tips on starting out and also has a rates and salaries survey, which gives a good impression of rates in the UK. Alternatively, if you take the plunge for platinum membership, you can access rates stats for the languages you are registered in.
