Now that is fun!
Yesterday I read a job announcement at another translators' portal (yeah, I do this sometimes ) for a job of 30,000 words and payment of 45 GBP per kilo.
Today the same agency posted the same job at Proz.com for 40 GBP per kilo.
Isn't this nice?
What do you think. How do you handle such agencies? How can we best keep each other informed on such topics?

Hi Claudia,
Seeing that as a combining form 'kilo' means one thousand, I guess the job poster is not in error.
Pound per Kilo... love the wordplay!
Will pass this around to see if it can collect a mega of laughs.

That rate is is a real rip-off, given that 30 kilos converts to a mere 60 pounds.
Claudia: These guys must see us as the bargain basement. To answer your question, I'd say - don't handle them...
(Remember the Blue Board allows you to post your opinion on rates - if you have worked for them).

I guess we should move this thread with all its kilos and pounds to the lighter side of translation.
Actually, the "kilo" terminology was not used by said agency, I was just to lazy to write "per 1000 words of text" and I was not at all aware of that pun. Nevertheless, I like it very much.

That's the proof that even from the worst something good may arise.
I hope everybody had a good laugh!
Stubborn as I am, I pointed out the two postings to said agency and asked whether there might have been a mistake or what these two postings would mean. They were very patient with me and explained, it meant that I will get paid for the job with the rate I applied for. Who would have imagined that! I am really happy they enlightened me. Strangely, I haven't heard of them ever since.
I'll have to go buy some heavy-weight paper now... ▲ Collapse
