Dear All,
When you think that this is the lowest, then another one comes up.
A day or so ago, I received one for USD .025/source word, with USD .01 for repetitions.
I sent them my rate sheet and informed them that I would require so much in advance due to the fact that they were a new client.
Thank goodness for excellent and reliable clients! They are daily in my prayers.

I' m glad you raised that point. I was always in the habit of immediately binning such messages sent to a group asking for ridiculous rates. However, on reflection, it is in the interests of all of us to continuously make it clear to such people what rates they should expect to pay.
I shall be guided by your example.

Last week I received an unsolicited e-mail from an agency, wanting me to send them my CV and rates, so I did.
This is what I got in response:
"To be honest we work with freelancers for US$0.02-US$0.03 for translations from English into Spanish. I don't know how cost effective that would be for you but thanks for your time. "

I should have answered back, I will in the future, maybe they do get people to do it for that low, that is why they offer such a ridiculous price!

I think this is another good chance to train our own "class consciousness". Many agencies scan translators' databases hoping to find someone willing to work for such rates. Sadly enough, there are such people out there. Nevertheless, we can't allow ourselves to accept this tendency and help destroy our professional future. I just received an enquiry about a 10,000 words tourism project. I confirmed my availability and rate, looked up the Blue Board and - Bingo! - a 100% non-payer who is banned from ProZ!
So I simply added the phrase:
But given your ProZ.com Blueboard entries,
I would have to insist on payment in advance.

They can't be professionals who actually know what they are doing!
I don't mind translating for free in some cases, for a good cause or for someone who really has no money. In that case I tell them to do someone else a favour sometime when they get the chance. People have helped me like that in the past...
I will answer so-called agencies offering ridiculous rates too from now on.

This is the lowest rate I've ever heard of in my life. I've seen 0.03 and even 0.02 (euro or USD), but never 0.01. Next thing you know, they'll be asking us to pay them to give us work.

Sure there are more than 12 people outraged with those rates but with a 6-digit number of Proz members/participants this job must have already been done and the outsourcers are laughing all the way to the bank. They will keep doing so. I can't cling to the illusion that with the borders open wide still only legitimate visa-holders will go through. To put it mildly, the crowd will be mixed. What is the problem about translating these days - Google, electronic dictionaries, MT - one must be crazy not to jump after the oppotrunity (my dismal irony).
This is what I was wondering about for a long time - when the statistics is given to us about the numbers of jobs obtained through Proz, is it tied to rates? I doubt it but... What share goes to a range of 2-3 cents/word... 5 or 85%? then 4-6, 7-10, then 10-14 etc. Would be very educational to know. ▲ Collapse
