Line-by-line review rate
Hi dear collegues,
I`d like to ask if someone of you have heard about "Line-by-line review rate" for proofreading? What is it and what is the fair rate for it?

I've never heard of "line by line review". Where did you hear about it? Did the client give you any clue about what it is?

Samuel, neither have I, so I`m wondering and even surprized to hear about it. But if the client asks apparently it does exist!

Never heard of if either! I’ve googled it and the outcome isn’t helpful: the only result is your post. Does your client mean the review rate expressed per line, instead of per word or per hour (the one I prefer, by the way)?

If your client insists on a per line review rate, then you could time how long you need per line and add up the minutes, ending up with charging your hourly rate according to how many minutes you've needed.
Perhaps it might be better if you could inform your client that there is a per-line translation rate (which s/he might have had in mind), but nothing like a per-line review rate. This way you could reach a mutual agreement.

Two points:
1) The only way to be certain is to ask the client what he/she/it means by the term. Ask them to be very clear and specific. A line can contain any number of words/ideas, be written in any size. What is a "line"? What do you do about half-lines, etc? When is a line a line?
2) The term "review" can be unclear too. What does it involve? Does it mean you are comparing the source and target, or just reading the final version with no comparison required? If ther... See more Two points:

Yes, there are too many questions and no answers. And I can't ask a client as it is a general questionaire about the rates. Anyway, thank you all!

Of course you are able to ask the client about this matter. It is in everyone's best interest that you have the same understanding as your client when it comes to this quote.
You can say something very simple, such as the following:
Thank you for your e-mail. Would you please clarify what you have in mind by a "line-by-line review rate"? Are you asking me to quote you a rate for a "line edit" of the work, or are you asking me to quote a "per line" rate for proofreading?... You can and should (must?) ask the client. This is not a general question about rates; it is a specific question about a fundamental term of your potential contract. The client is using a term whose meaning is not clear. If you cannot obtain a clearly defined understanding of what is meant by this term, it would be silly to sign the contract. How much you are to be paid and for what specific task is at the heart of any contract. Signing a contract where neither is clear means that you run the risk of working without any clear idea of what you are to do or how much you are going to be paid. It is an open door for problems ahead.
I would now add a third point to the difficulty: if you cannot ask your client this sort of question, how can you work with them?
Some of us have been around for more than 20 years and have not come across this term. Your questions are not unreasonable, they are fundamental.
