Exactly. Moreover, just because someone is productive, doesn't mean they are producing bad quality. Likewise, just because a translator's output is low doesn't mean his/her quality is higher. I've read plenty of carefully crafted poor translations as I am sure we all have. In terms of what defines a successful translator, I'm not sure either of these metrics (quality or output) is a good measure. Success can look very different from one person to another.

You can also figure out the totals the other way around:

Assuming full-time work at 40 hours/week ...

There are 52 * 5 = 260 weekdays per year
6 weeks vacation is standard in Germany, for example = 230 days
7 or 8 holidays standard in Berlin, for example (but relatively low) = 223 days
8 sick/ personal days per year a solid average (without kids) = 215 days

So we have 6 hours per day * 215 days = 1290 billable hours/ year

I clock in at between 200 and 250 words per hour = +/- 300,000 words/ year.

That said, there are obviously some countries and some circles among freelancers where vacation and illness are considered signs of a welfare or civil-service mentality, but if we are talking about levels that can and ought to be sustained for decades, I think that these numbers are perfectly normal.

And obviously, most freelancers' vacations aren't like an employees' vacations and those 40 hours per week may be 50 sometimes and 30 sometimes and a part of them will sometimes fall on the weekend ...
