The following is a short editorial on Transcreation that I published in the US American advertisers magazine "Media Inc."
Yes, I hired a ghostwriter. I hired him to do the transcreation of my original article because I am not a native speaker. I paid him a hefty 3-digit hourly rate because I know what transcreation is worth. I also honored him by allowing him to advertise his office:

Let’s face facts. Marketing to audiences in another language is an incredible challenge. Factor in local cultural idiosyncrasies and that challenge becomes a Herculean task. It can keep even the most confident copywriter up at night wondering if his German / Swiss / Austrian target audience will get why all his friends think he’s so clever and amusing.
Linguistic and cultural differences affect copy and graphics, sometimes subtly and sometimes dramatically. Shades of meaning, idiomatic quirks, and cultural conventions impact the meaning of any translation. But not everyone takes this into account. Copy that starts out witty and sensible can quickly become ridiculous or — worse — downright offensive.
Direct word-for-word translation just doesn't work. An effective translation requires what's known as localized trans-creation. This is the synthesis of language, knowledge of local cultures, and good old-fashioned marketing know-how. Any half decent copy will contain references that may only make sense in a particular cultural setting, jokes that have a fairly narrow scope. It requires the skills of a creative translator to produce the same effects in another language.
Experts like Nicole Schnell of Schnell Creative Group LLC in Portland, OR have been bridging the gap between American and European audiences for years. Particularly focused on English-to-German creative translation, Schnell Creative Group LLC is part of a small, but dedicated, community of translators who strive to produce translations that foster actual communication across language barriers.
For marketers, the important thing to remember is that there are options when introducing yourself and your products to a foreign market. The days of adding an umlaut to your copy and hoping for the best are over. A skilled, professional translator can provide the crucial solutions you’ll need.

Here is the copy of one of the full page print ads that I ran in the same magazine (got me some direct clients, BTW).
"The Mist Stick Becomes A Mist-Stück.
When a major cosmetics manufacturer introduced the Mist Stick in Germany under its English name, the results were quite embarrassing. No one took the time to learn that "mist" is German for manure; the company was shocked to learn that German women weren't interested in styling their hair with a "poop-stick." ... International marketing demands more than a dictionary. It requires a translator who's also a skilled marketer, fluent in the original and target languages and cultures. You'll need an expert in trans-creation, the art of translating the meaning behind your message. You’ll want a professional who can help you avoid making an unfortunate translating mist-stück." ▲ Collapse | | | And the hourly rate? | Nov 11, 2024 |
Dear colleagues,
I appreciate your comments, they are always helpful. However, can anyone say what the average hourly rate would be for a transcreation job? I understand there are variations and subtleties depending on the market. But for the European market, what would you accept as a reasonably well paid job, per hour?
