I just received this. I love how they try to bribe translators at the end with the promise of lots of potential work (if they can return a high quality product - by paying someone US.045 - NOT!). In addition, the e-mail is an @yahoo.com address. I responded and said that since my base rate is almost 3x what they are offering, I will decline this offer and enjoy my weekend instead.

"Dear translator,

We have received a large project regarding Italian tax laws. There will potentially be much more work of this type coming over the coming months if we can return a high quality job this time!

All files should be translated in ttx format, but we can make concessions for WordFast users.

The rate for this work is .03 GBP (British Pound) per word.

The payment will be in USD at the rate of the day of payment.

We pay promptly 35 days following the end of the month in which the project is returned.

After these files are done, we will still have another 160,000 words to complete for this project before mid-June.

I did receive the same email today May 16, 2009

Jeff,
Today I received the same exact email regarding the huge tax Italian - English project. Do you think that's a bogus project or an email sent by someone trying to rip translators off?
I did respond to the email and let's see what response I will be getting from.

Scam May 16, 2009

It's a scam, we have similar project in Russia, though some options are different, for ex. we're offered to pay much more for the urgency of the project, still none of has seen money

What I do not understand is if companies never have any intention of paying anyway, why offer such low rates? Why not offer a high rate and at least please their clients?

You may be able to find people in developing countries who would be able to work at that rate and still (a) do a good job (b) turn a profit. But they won't be native English speakers and as these are documents about tax laws, I imagine you would want your translations to be accurate and credible, without errors.

I suggest you increase your tariff to at least double your current offer, and try again.
