Dear all,

An agency has contacted me, asked me for my rate per line. They say that they normally pay their translator for 0.40 Euro per line.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but if a line consists, let's say, 20-25 words, that means they pay the translator with 0.02 Euro per word !

Is it easier to count per word than per line like that ?

Please advise me something

Line prices Apr 25, 2008

Hi Vicksy,

I don't obviously know how many Indonesian words there are to a line. In English there are about 11 words to a line.

It is normally the German lines (Ausgangszeilen) that are counted, and I work on the basis that it is 0,5 euro cents higher per word than the line price, e.g.

0.60 per line = 0.65 per word
0.70 per line = 0.75 per word
0.80 per line = 0.85 per word
0.90 per line = 0.95 per word

Hope this helps.

line price is often better Apr 25, 2008

Hello,

there is the special situation, the in German there is the possibility to write very long words. So we often calculate translations on line base.

For a 55 char line you usually have 8.5 - 9.5 words in English and. 6 - 8 word in German.

Regards

Hans

Do you maybe mean 0.065 etc. per word? Always difficult with this sort of conversion. In fact, we reckon with about 7 German words or 8 English words per line of 55 chars.

Vicksy: the standard German line is 55 or 50 characters, you or the client decide which length applies. Then it's simply a matter of dividing the final character count in the translation by the standard line length to arrive at the number of nominal (billable) lines.

Hallo Vicksy Apr 25, 2008

I can't believe that the German agency pays 0,40 € a line! In your language combination, which is a rare one, you shoud ask, after my opinion, 1,00-1,20 per line (55 characters, target language). In Switzerland, such a price would already be considered dumping form the swiss colleagues...

Good luck!

Hi Robin,

Yes, sure, I forgot that extra zero. Maybe it's just how much I would like to be paid. Conversely, I keep accidentally quoting agencies a line price with an extra zero in front after the decimal point!

Tell me again, in what language can you fit 20-25 words into 55 characters?

It's so Apr 27, 2008

In German the client always pays like that for per line. It is fair that 0.4 for a line.

my experience Apr 28, 2008

I don't think I get paid especially much, but from the two German clients I have, that pay per line, I get EUR 0.90 and 0.85 respectively (for both of my language pairs). I wouldn't personally consider working for EUR 0.40 per line.

My experience with German agencies Apr 28, 2008

Hello Vicksy,

From my experience I can tell you, that German agencies are willing to pay EUR 0.80-1.10 per line. Having such a rare language combination, you might be in a good position to propose a higher rate. Personally, I wouldn't even consider working for EUR 0.40.

HTH,
Aleksandra
