Hi,
I am looking to specialise in Spanish to English legal translations. Does anyone know of any text books or specialised dictionaries which might be useful in understanding the legal terminology?

Dear Zestie,
A few books and specialised dictionaries will not help you specialise in legal translation. If you are unfamiliar not only with the terminology but also the legal systems of the countries from whose languages you intend to translate, you might lay yourself open to serious legal consequences.

I would recommend that you enrol on some kind of legal training (plenty available in the UK - you don't have to train to be a solicitor). Additionally, you may want to pursue your studies on a dedicated translation course (University of Westminster for example, though there are many more).
I hope that helps. I don't mean to sound discouraging but it is a very specialised area, not for the fainthearted.

Many thanks for your advice.
I have looked into legal translation courses available in the UK and am considering a CPD (continuing professional development course) rather than an MA in legal translation.
Do you think learning about the principles of commercial law, terminology and contracts would be the right way to go?

The courses I believe you are talking about would not equip you for a career in legal translation. They are designed to supplement rather than be the basis of your legal knowledge and expertise. I know you don't have to have a qualification in translation to be a translator but a one year translation course often proves to be very beneficial. I thought I understood contracts, but when I did a course on legal translation I understood that I did not really understand what was going on. I completely recommend to do courses on legal translation at translation training centres in your area. It will do wonders!

In that case, by all means do the CPD courses, but also, any other legal training you can find that is not going to cost you the earth.
