Could there be some way to show the time sequence (1, 2, 3, etc.) of answers in addition to minutes and hours?

Such a feature would seem to be useful in cases where several identical answers are received, normally within the first few minutes after the question has been posted, and within the same minute.

Of course the asker does not have to award points to the quickest answer, but I suppose that most would wish to do so because it would be fair.

Henry - I think an emphasis on "who was first" is detrimental to quality. We see that a lot in English monolingual. Within a minute or two someone quickly slaps something together that is approximately right but without much of an explanation. It is so obvious that the answerer desperately needed to get something on the board as quickly as possible.

What makes things worse in English monolingual is that the community seems to approve of this behavior by piling on the agrees. I'd rather see an emphasis on quality.

Agree on Quality, but... Sep 25, 2006

I definitely agree with you on quality, Kim, but perhaps you misunderstood my drift here. I'm referring specifically to questions that are fairly easy for which there is a clearly obvious answer. Two or three people can chime in within the same minute with that same identical answer.

If the asker chooses that answer, a sequence feature would merely make it easy to determine which was first.

I would never say that an asker should choose an answer because it was first, ex

I would never say that an asker should choose an answer because it was first, except in the case of identical answers. In all cases quality should come first.

Various reasons why not Sep 25, 2006

Henry
Well-intended as your post may be, I fear your suggestion/hope will never get off the ground:

a) I could well imagine this is technically impossible (i.e. by the second as well as minute)
b) In many cases where there are two answers posted at the "same time", one of them will have more information/input than the other, i.e. deserves the points
c) I would discourage any system that further fuels the whole point-grabbing scenario
e) Does it really matter?

Bells and whistles Sep 25, 2006

I understand, Henry, but I still think we need to be careful about all the bells and whistles we introduce. And even though you're perfectly right that non-pro questions in particular don't require much explanation, and a quick term will often suffice and these answers will come in one after another in short order, I believe strongly that if anything we need to downplay speed.

Who cares what answer is selected when the question is easy? If we're going to introduce new features why

Who cares what answer is selected when the question is easy? If we're going to introduce new features why not concentrate on improving answers to pro-level questions?

It's not a big one... Sep 25, 2006

In my suggestion I would assume that assigning an order "as received" would be easy to incorporate, but if not, it could best be forgotten because its usefulness would be limited.

I just wondered what others would think, plus there are indeed other issues that are of much greater importance.

A variant ... Sep 25, 2006

I suggest that a more useful variant on Henry's proposal would be to have a top-down chronological display on Kudoz pages that clearly shows the order of arrival of *all* information - not just Henry's quick answers but also the 'agrees' and their respective peer comments and answerer replies, as well as all the 'ask the asker' stuff.

It is at present very difficult to keep track when there is a discussion on a complex question with input from both the asker and multiple answerers/peers, all posting in different boxes on the page in apparently random order.

It doesn't help that the question is date/time-stamped in absolute terms, but answers are timed relative to that, not in absolute time. Ask the asker stuff is not time-stamped at all. It can - sometimes does - get very confusing!

Points for identical answers Sep 25, 2006

If two identical answers arrive at the same time, I award points to the person who has the least number of KudoZ points.

Another suggestion Sep 26, 2006

Personally I would rather see comments become mandatory when posting the initial answer.

A thing that really annoys me (not hugely) but still, is when people fire off an answer within 2 or 3 minutes and then put a "." in the comments box just so that they can register the quickest answer. A few minutes later they come back with maybe a few comments but more often than not a long long list of links which I'm quite capable of finding myself.

I think if it was mandatory to write X amounts of words in the comment box at the same time as the initial answer then it would make the points grabbers think more about the answers they are going to give and the quality of answers would improve.

Especially when it came to Pro-level questions. If everyone knew they were going to have to substantiate the links they provide with an explanation then they might spend more time actually reading the link before providing it to see if it is in fact relevant to what the asker is asking.

I know some people would still probably make a long winded sentence about how these links might help the asker just to fill up the required quota of words in the comment box but I still think it would be an improvement.

Best wishes,
Mark

Use of references when answering queries Sep 26, 2006

Chinese:

You might check the nearby thread on "Use of references when answering queries" since you seem to be straying in that direction.

I've made a few comments there on what you mention, check it out.

Hi Henry,

I did read both before posting but decided that if any improvement was going to be implemented then this would be a better implementation than having the answers listed to the very second of posting which I view as absolutely pointless.

I do like Tampa Translator's idea of awarding points to the person with the lowest Kudoz score though, I shall implement that myself next time I find myself in the same position with answers posted at the same time.

I could have posted the same message on each thread but at the end of the day both threads are in the same forum of Kudoz so as long as the message gets through, that's the important thing.

Best wishes,
Mark

Sorry I cut a chunk out of your response. That dot thing annoys me, too. Sometimes, they don't even bother to go back and fill it in. I don't think references necessarily make the answer better (see my post on the thread Henry mentioned), but, heck, even "I'm an expert and that's what it means" isn't so hard, is it?

Yes. Surely this is the real issue at hand here?

Those who limit their explanations to "." or "-" or "in my opinion" or (worse) "my two cents" are generally just intent on grabbing the points.
There are, of course, exceptions where the context is clear and somebody is simply adding another CREATIVE option.
