I just wanted to say how useful I've found this discussion.
Owing to illness, I'm back translating after a space of a number of years - at the moment, I'm doing some prep work, extending my areas of expertise, evaluating software, doing a few sample translations etc with a view to going full time probably in the New Year.
If you intend to become a valued member of any community, it pays to find out how it works and treat other members with respect.

I agree with Jeff that the number of Kudoz answers that can be asked a week/month is way too high. Personally, I think a max. of 20 questions per week should apply to everybody - also members. And translators using the Kudoz system should only very rarely need to come close to this limit.
I just checked the FAQ, and as it is now, you can ask up to 20 questions per week if you are a registered non-member and 60 (!!) if you are a membe... Many others prefer to ask, and ask, and ask, ignoring the fact that doing so is like walking along the edge of a cliff. Some day you will stumble and fall, and then you will not be able to climb the cliff again because you quite simply don't know how to do it.

Couldn't agree more! Very often if you just google the term asked by some translators, you find the answer almost straight away... I don't know if people are just lazy, but if your cynical, you can see it as an easy way to earn KudoZ points!

I know a number of HIGHLY EXPERIENCED translators who no longer participate in Kudoz (asking/answering) because they grew tired of the many aggressive, judgemental, "I'm your Mommy and you've been a bad boy" posts.
These people used to make a valuable contribution to Kudoz (through both questions & answers). Their absence = a loss.
I think that many of us underestimate the power of the words we choose to use.

I would only consider it for those who are actually rude to me on more than one occasion - but I know their names and can ignore them without any help from a computer.
As far as the other categories are concerned, yes, people who routinely ask hundreds of basic questions tire my patience.
However, everyone makes a mistake once in a while by taking on something that ends up being a bit too difficult, and with short timescales jobs like that can become a nightmare - haven't you been there?
Regarding questions left open, I have absolutely no idea which of the questions I have answered have been closed and which have been left open - I simply don't keep track.

I only filter askers, never peers or answerers because ultimately askers are the absolute owners of the question, they always can do the right thing even if peers or answerers don't do. Reason to filter them: when they show a clear lack of common sense (and others). In my view, these askers are too unfair to deserve any kind of help from me.

Example 2 (lack of knowledge on how kudoz works = laziness): I enter an answer, asker chooses it as the most helpful one but leaves to the community to decide based on peer agreement and the community votes or has already voted for another answer and my answer ends up not being selected.
Example 3 (lack of politeness): as someone wrote before, I dislike when an asker "just_closes" a question but I don't filter them; but one of them, in particular, was rude to me when I pointed out to him, based on his history, that he was "just_closing too often", without any explanation as to why he was doing it, and so I filtered him.
There are more examples...
Askers that ask too many questions, askers that may look like they are not qualified for the job, etc, don't bother me (after all, it is not my name on their job, but theirs); what bothers me is to be unfair towards me, to show poor judgement.

But I always ask whenever I have the slightest doubt, as it's in my nature to believe that it's better to ask and look silly than not to do so !
I'm currently trying to finish two master degrees one in Electrical Engineering and the other in Telecommunications... I also have a CCNA certificate aside from my other life experience...And I still manage to ask a lot in those fields when I have a job... See more Hello,

I never thought that there would be a black list and a white list ! But I do know that there is a first step to everything ! People aren't born experts they become experts...

But then I have settings that send only questions for Tamil/Hindi. Other questions I choose to see the list if and when I get the time.
Even in case of questions received by me I straightaway reject questions marked Non-pro or "Not for points".

Yes, I agree with your whole posting, Sheila, although I'm quoting only part of it.
I can always ignore the questions from people who routinely ask 15 per day, for days on end. I can always choose not to answer such questions. But even so, when I have the time to spare, I have found that reading other people's anwers to these (abusive or downright silly questions) is often interesting and illustrative. If I blacklisted the askers, I would be missing all that input from valued colleagues.

I have not activated any notifications, I have no filtered, tracked or flagged answerers/askers. (Ok, I'm not a great Kudoz contributor compared to others.) I only visit the site when I want to relax a little bit and do some research (for others, can be very interesting sometimes). I'm really surprised to see that so many users have so many other users flagged or whatever. If I don't like the question, I ignore it.
